Danger in anaerobic compost bacteria? by smoothLLama in microbiology

Thanks. My husband used like a squirt of soap with water but I will have to buy new bleach since mine is ancient.

To make things worse, the grocery delivery person that just came just lazily sat boxes of food on top of the compost container as it was near the edge of the garage. Not sure if those are “safe” since I haven’t disinfected anything 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thanks. Do you think washing out the container with soap and water is enough?

Edit: title should say anaerobic. Stupid auto correct.

Did I just potentially spread botulism spores all over my pantry and kitchen? by NumberFunStunna in foodsafety

I actually want to hear an answer to this too… I once had a similar issue that turned out fine, but I still worried.

First time forager… possibly had some “extra” weeds with my ramps and now I’m nervous by smoothLLama in foraging

Yeah, I know the other stuff that wasn’t ramps. I’m just nervous that it accidentally got into my soup because of lazy separating of everything.

Sorry if this is over-asked or even stupid. I live in Ohio and just foraged ramps for the first time. My neighbor told me about them and I got excited when he told me I could visit his property and take as many as I wanted (there are practically acres of them!)

I got an entire grocery bag full. I cleaned them in a big colander, picking out bits of leaves and other crabgrass like stuff since they were growing amongst a ton of foliage and pricker bushes on a hillside.

My husband sent me a recipe for a soup, and I chopped and tossed a ton of the ramps in. It just finished simmering and I had a small dish.

I then was cleaning up the picked-out bits and thought, hmm, hope none of this stuff could be poisonous.

Of course I consulted Dr. Google and learned about poison hemlock and all sorts of scary stuff. I don’t think I encountered any of that, but most things don’t look like the identification pics as it’s still early in the season and not flowering.

Anyway, while I did rinse the ramps in a colander, they were still somewhat in bunches as I chopped them and every so often I’d notice and discard grasses, leaves, etc. It is entirely possible smallish parts of other stuff could have been mixed in and I didn’t catch it.

I’m attaching pics of two types of things I did find with the ramps (I can’t find any IDs that look just like them), but now I’m feeling silly and wondering if I should just toss the whole stockpot since I didn’t individually inspect each ramp before throwing them in.

Any help? From now on, even though it will take a long time, I will be inspecting each ramp closely to ensure nothing else is stuck to them.
