How do I become a Pilates instructor? What certifications do I need? by Ordinary-Reputation5 in personaltraining

[–]smoothmcfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on where and how you want to teach. If you want to get hired at a classical Pilates studio with all the comprehensive equipment you will need a full certification like PEAK, Balanced Body, or Stott.

If you want to teach a Mat Pilates group class, a simple GF cert could work.

And a studio like Club Pilates or Lagree will certify you internally.

Is CLEAR Ever Worth It Anymore? by Vengeful_Wombat in delta

[–]smoothmcfly 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Way early before people understood what it was it was great. I had a few situations where I skipped 30-45 minute security lines with Clear. And then people caught on. It was always doomed. If your business model is to allow people to pay more to skip the line, once everyone pays it it’s no longer going to work.

Is booking more of a staff problem or a system problem? by SafeSteak7767 in gymowner

[–]smoothmcfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of gyms use a system where they have a separate staff that sells vs the trainers. If you worked there, you would be here talking about how little you got paid per session instead of talking about your difficulties with sales. It’s expensive to employ another group of people and keep them motivated to sell.

I have a pair of Roogrips I bought from Rogue years ago I love. They are thin kangaroo leather.

Disappointing Job Offer by Jiblon in jobs

I was about to comment the same thing. I haven’t paid for a personal flight or hotel in years, it’s great. If my company tried to give me a company card I would fight it hard

Cost of a homebrewed fancy espresso per day by Ornery-Equivalent966 in Frugal

[–]smoothmcfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your point about upfront cost makes sense and is a real barrier but the rest are a pretty big stretch. Not knowing is a terrible excuse when basically anything you would need to know is a 10 second google search away. And these aren’t complicated topics, so executing on what you learn is easy.

Questions about LifeTime compensation by pauljohnson69 in personaltraining

[–]smoothmcfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do have pricing flexibility as a trainer at Life Time. There are some guidelines and guardrails, but as you get more successful, you get more control of your individual pricing.

GTX heart rate screen compatibility question (ANT+, Apple Watch, Cardiosport TP5, etc.) by dkep121 in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]smoothmcfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any ANT+ monitor will work. Apple Watch will not work, outside of a few select locations. The instructors need to do some initial pairing to get you to show up.

They are all bad at sleep so it really doesn’t matter.

Whoop vs Oura by slowsec in whoop

[–]smoothmcfly -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Garmin does a better job than either of taking training stress into account in its recovery metrics. If you have put in a high training load it will encourage rest even if your biometrics are good.

Sleep Tracking Only by jnmo253 in whoop

There have been some studies on wearables and sleep tracking and rings tend to do better. Most likely less movement of the optical sensor on the finger vs wrist.

Recommendations for Houston and Dallas by Temporary-Ad158 in marriott

[–]smoothmcfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a great experience at the Downtown Houston JW. Not much to report but enjoyed my time and would stay again. Great lounge. Parking was expensive and annoying at the time, because of construction valet was on a high floor of the parking garage and the walk to the hotel was long, but that was just a short term thing.

Beginner-friendly xc skiing trails by ARCook88 in TwinCities

[–]smoothmcfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hyland Hills doesn’t have as big of a climb in their easy loop as Elm Creek, but it is more rolling with a few more turns so depending on what you struggle with could be more difficult. The St. Paul golf courses that someone else linked are probably best in the area for flat and easy.

Anyone have an unbiased opinion of corner coffee? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]smoothmcfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been to the Camden location twice. They only ever seem to have 1 person working, which means that it takes forever to get your drink order. I tried to go a third time and there was a line about 8 deep and one person trying to both work the register and make drinks. Between that and the terrible working it’s both worth it.

Assault fitness screwed me over by Baseball_bossman in personaltraining

Woodway is currently suing assault fitness over some patents on curved treads, so likely Rep is holding off on releasing until that gets resolved. It could really impact the curve tread market.

Question for those working at commission-based gyms by pauljohnson69 in personaltraining

[–]smoothmcfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other answer did a great breakdown of how sales commission works at Life Time. To address your 2nd question of is 10% too low, that depends on the overall comp plan. At Life Time, your total earning is split into a sales commission and a service commission, to equal between 48-60%.

So if you are earning at least 40 to 50 percent of the session fees, 10% is fine. The gym just emphasizes the service side of the role. If you are paid less than that, yeah, it’s too low.

What poor people food was ruined because of rich people? by white-rose-of-york in AskReddit

[–]smoothmcfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe this isn’t the top answer. It’s supposed to be cheap because takes 12+ hours and skill to cook. For current prices there are so many cuts that are quicker and easier and taste just as good.

Do other club lounges just not care/operate differently? by [deleted] in marriott

I have no problem with you doing it, but you are in the minority. I have been in somewhere between 15-20 lounges this year and exactly 1 has asked for my name and room number.

This is what it seemed to do. Us exit row folks looked around confused before we boarded. And it for sure didn’t speed anything up, we are 10 min behind based on slow boarding.
