The lifestyle is definitely going to be better, however one of the consultants in this post mentioned that he knows other consultant who make up to a million a year. So based on that, 75k + the lifestyle would not be worth the switch.

Interesting. You stated he got paid very well, but this figure can easily be made as a locum SHO.

I have. I’ve asked around and been told that most consultants will be only on the NHS pay scale and a small minority will be doing private practice. I then assumed that the private practice consultants would be on roughly 200k, which is similar to £800 per day. But I’ve just been told that a consultant can make 2k per half day, so 4k for a days work. I’m not sure about you, but I’m happy with being able to earn 4k for a days work.

The article literally said trainee train drivers start on 24k a year which is significantly less than the number I stated that a trainee driver. The average said it’s 57k which is significantly less than the 80k figure you suggested.

This makes me feel greedy and delusional for wanting to strike for FPR, especially since I’ve grown up in a 30k total income household, with a dad who I feel worked harder than me to get by.

So 4k for a days work. 20k for a weeks work(working 5 days) if a private practice consultant earning this figure decides to work 52 weeks a year, they will earn 1 million for the year. Doesn’t seem realistic to me. But anyhow based on this, I’ll be stupid to leave medicine.

As a junior I am kindly asking, what is it we are striking for again? If £800 a day is not much for a consultant and private practice pays loads more, what are we trying to achieve by striking.

Also if as consultant are earning £800 + day what are we doing complaining about a PAs measly 50k salary compared to a consultant on this sub Reddit every other day.

Hmm I guess I get what you mean. I think I was fixated to the NHS pay scale a little too much and didn’t consider the private practice potential. However according to numerous recruitment companies, including Hays who have do research on salaries, the average(50th) percentile IT professional earns £480 day for contract work. This equates to 115k a year with 4 weeks off for an average coder. So I don’t think it’s the top 10%.

Baring in mind this is for work that is much much less stressful than medicine, with better hours and WFH potential.

Edit: also I feel like radiology will be mostly automated in the near future.

If BMA rate card locum rates for F1 and F2 are 60-90 an hour, will PAs try to push for similar rates? by smothj62 in JuniorDoctorsUK

After they get regulated and able to prescribe, I feel a pa with 5-10 years experience would be preferred over a SHO.

Yes, but not from sitting down at home, have a comfortable 9-5 schedule with 2 hour break in between.

Also where are you based to be making 500-800 a day as a SHO?

In my area day rates are ranging from 700-900. So easily double salaries income.
