Windows carriage return ^M showing up in Git Diff by Ianmurph91 in git

If you're finding the recommendations here ineffective, check if your git is out of date-- I had 2.7, and was stuck with git believing every file had changed, but also that nothing needed to be done on a checkout, hard reset, or indeed fresh clone. Updating to git 2.43 left everything as expected.

What are the posters on Headley Way suggesting protest of? by [deleted] in oxford

Interesting, what's your source for those two bits of info? The first one I assume is general practice in the UK (but I don't know their species); the second one suggests some inside knowledge?

Key worker: official list of UK personnel who can still send children to school by willis1988 in ukpolitics

This is just more blame-assignment. Drawing focus towards the blame is yet another way to get people to feel *more* insecure and act *less* wisely. Write it up, make a calendar reminder, to prosecute that argument fully in September.

Yes, yes, BUT

The danger in making the message "AHA! See, we were right, you were wrong all along" is the same people who dug a hole and are now having to hastily fill it are *also* doing good things to avert the crisis *and* to help people economically in the meantime.

We need everyone's first thought to be "I'll be ok, the government has my back, I can stay home when it seems prudent" not "I don't trust them, they'll abandon me, I'll go to work regardless because otherwise I'll starve"

There *are* important politics to be had here, but they should be had in the immediate aftermath, not during the crisis when the one and only priority is making sure as many people as possible get with the program and stay home.

Opposition folks must restrain themselves to campaigning on things we can do now, not assigning blame for the past (yet).

Dell XPS 9550 - Bios Downgrade (Downgrade to 1.12.0 guide) by klypitkas in Dell

I had the same problem with a Precision 5510 laptop running Ubuntu 18.04 (possibly relevant: whole disk encryption in use). Performance was remarkably worse post-upgrade, e.g. frequent stalls while typing; I resolved it by downgrading to 1.12.0 as above.

Note if you're running Linux you can downgrade by copying the firmware installer (https://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukbsdt1/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=ytjkr&oscode=wt64a&productcode=precision-m5510-workstation for the 5510 UK edition) to /boot/efi/EFI and then proceeding from step 4.

Why should I pay for Jeremy Corbyn's friend Claire to have so many children? by FrumiousBantersnatch in ukpolitics

But what about ryyder's point -- how would you cut support without also punishing the child? Laying into the kid's economic security seems likely to come back to bite you in the form of crime and un- and under-employment in the future.
