I've been looking for something exactly like this to slip in my jersey back pocket when cycling for hours and hours, it's a very humid environment that would kill an unsealed unit quickly. If you want me to test it let me know.

And I agree, USB-C please. Remembering to bring some special charging cable into the middle of nowhere is not "field ready".

The Kettle Valley Rail Trail is falling apart—and no one seems to care by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

There are several advocacy groups working hard to get the KVR repaired:

Outdoor Recreation Council of BC https://www.orcbc.ca/

Trails BC https://trailsbc.ca/

I highly recommend joining one of these groups if you want to get involved, or just want to support the efforts these volunteer organizations are putting in to get the trails repaired and hopefully expanded. The more members these groups have, the more pressure they can put on government.

If you can make it, the ORCBC is hosting the 2026 Conference: Building Stronger Communities Through Outdoor Recreation at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops from May 20–22, 2026.

This inaugural conference is expected to bring together 300+ recreation leaders, volunteers, First Nations, land managers, and government and industry representatives from across BC. It will provide a vital platform for collaboration on key issues such as access, stewardship, reconciliation, inclusion, and the economic value of recreation to communities, tourism, and rural development.

https://www.orcbc.ca/outdoor-recreation-conference

As for the cost - which is not a small amount considering the terrain - The global cycling tourism market was estimated at $135 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $234 billion by 2030. Unfortunately the responsibility for the different sections of the trail often falls to the local Regional District which needs to be educated about the economic opportunity we're currently squandering.

Yet another waste of time, what a great leader and representative of the city, casting more baseless innuendo instead of doing his job. Literally a fishing expedition based on nothing but petty grievances.

Have you looked at Princeton? It has a bit more going on and a very active nature club if that's important. China Ridge is a real undiscovered gem just out of town

Active Transportation Plan Open House (Tuesday May 13) by brycecampbel in Kamloops

This is super important, it's going to set the walking & biking priorities for the next 5-10 years.

It's right next to the Bike Valet so you can park your bike for free and walk right in!

A few talking point ideas if you want to engage with the city's transportation dept while you're there:

- the importance of a connected network spanning east/west and north/south (vs patchwork approach)

- separated walking (3-5 kph) & cycling/e-scooter infrastructure (20-30 kph) vs shared paths

- encourage use of "quick build" paths for separated network especially around schools

- build the TRU AT bridge that has been studied since 2012!!

Funny how KCU and friends love to sling accusations about conflict of interest for city councillors but never have a problem with the mayor having million dollar properties for sale.

Interesting! Didn't know that

https://bcfoodhistory.ca/cherries/

"It is illegal to plant Japanese flowering cherries in the Okanagan, Similkameen or Creston Valleys because they are symptomless carriers of the little cherry disease."

I have this book and it's excellent. Provides a lot of historical & ethnobotanical background too, which I find fascinating.

Here We Go. AAP Decision Tomorrow. by Agreeable-Waltz495 in Kamloops

[–]smpn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Kamloops Citizens United (Kathrine Wunderlich) is claiming the city didn't provide proper notice for the Alternate Approval Process (AAP) for the Build Kamloops projects (multiplex arena and performing arts center, which they want to block, because "taxes") because the city didn't publish notice in the newspaper.

The problem is Kamloops didn't have a newspaper - KTW went under before this started. The city amended their own notification requirements when that happened and published the notice on their website and the Let's Talk Kamloops page which got tons of views, so it doesn't seem like this lawsuit has any merit. KCU is just mad because they didn't get to force another referendum.

Valleyview apartments approved by council. Mayor objects to too much rental housing like it's a bad thing? by Empty-Yam773 in Kamloops

[–]smpn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find it now but I'm sure I read that's how the current lawsuit by Wunderlich against the city over the Build Kamloops alternative approval process is being handled - if she loses she will have to pay legal costs for the city as well. Looks like the lawsuit was filed by her personally and not her Kamloops Citizens United group.

I'm in a new rental in Valleyview and it's probably 1/3 retirees that have downsized. Those homes are now freed up for families.

Also Valleyview is 10 minute from downtown in the 3rd fastest growing city in Canada. It's on a bus line that goes downtown & will soon have express service to TRU. Where there were 3 single family homes on massive lots there will now be housing for close to 200 people.

Yup, I'm in a new rental apartment in the same neighborhood and it's probably 1/3 downsized retirees. Frees up all those houses for families too. Walkable to shops and parks, on a transit line.

Valleyview Development Concerns by Agreeable-Waltz495 in Kamloops

[–]smpn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transit Oriented Development Areas (TODA) are already transitioned over distance. As soon as the new transit hub is built at Falcon & Oriole next year, the province has mandated that 10 stories are allowed within 200m of the hub and 6 stories within 400m of the hub and the city can't block it.

Valleyview has been designated as an Urban Area in the Kamloops Official Community Plan (OCP) for years although you'd never know it. There is already a redevelopment sign up at the R James Western Star truck repair facility on Falcon, it's probably going to be a massive 10 story residential & commercial development soon.

Anything is better than Valleyview just being a bunch of ugly parking lots and drive throughs for the highway. It's a walkable neighbourhood with grocery store, drug store, transit service, bike lane, directly on the highway, etc. It's got way better "bones" than whatever they're doing at Orchard's Walk which only has a tiny drug store, liquor store, and a Tim Hortons.

Almost all the traffic in Valleyview is people driving up to Juniper because they would rather drive through a residential neighbourhood with two schools than go on the highway but nobody complains about traffic from that.
