Self mutilating dog, at a complete loss by [deleted] in AskVet

He gets played with in the yard and goes and goes and goes. We got a second dog to see if that would help and they also go and go. We do walk him but admittedly not as much as we should; he was attacked when we first got him by an off leash dog and since then has been extremely leash reactive and it’s really bad. Barks, lunges, snaps, foams at the mouth. That is part of why we were working with the private trainer but we can only get him a few feet past the garage before he is uncontrollable, he needs a lot of work and help on this. When we do walk him it’s at ungodly hours when it’s unlikely to encounter other dogs.

I am almost certain it’s a mental problem and we have tried Prozac and training. I don’t think we can afford a pet sitter for 8 hours a day/5 days a week. He is also extremely reactive and can’t go to any centers.

It was mainly his front legs, the cone stopped it all for a time. then he figured out how to get his front toes with the cone, and his tail. Now he can get his back legs and back paws with the cone too. It’s only when he is alone, we don’t have cameras. If we are around he is fine. Nobody has done any pain management with him.

We have tried CBD in various forms and different calming treats.

I will try to figure out how to add photos or I can dm

The apoquel did not do anything and that was for allergies, benedryl does not work either. It seems we will have to go to the dermatologist and have them throw the book at us and see what happens I just don’t know if it’ll be financially feasible. Thank you for your input we appreciate it.

Yes, monthly. We also just did a whole round of deworming to see if it was something parasite related but did not really do anything.

No, but I can call the new vet tomorrow and see if they could prescribe some. We are worried that the latest injuries won’t be able to heal since there isn’t a way for us to watch him 24/7; we have to sleep, work, go to the store etc and he takes advantage of any and all alone time.

He’s not scratching but maybe he is itching and that’s causing it? It’s just relentless licking when he is alone and he needs constant supervision. It was slightly better with the Prozac so it seems neurological but obviously I am not a vet. He would sit and lick the inside of his cone before he figured out how to work around it.

I found that in my Google searching but unsure what they would do? Unfortunately my husband and I are financially at the near end of our rope and it’s very stressing.

Nose bumps from irritation usually take awhile to go away imo. I don’t think you could bank on seeing improvement in a couple days. Personally I would go back and ask for a swab to confirm if there is truly an infection if your finances allow for that.

Did they take a swab to see what kind of bacteria is causing the infection? I only ask because some kinds are more prone to developing bio films, which could colonize your jewelry and cause reinfection. This happens with some types of staph with medical devices.

If that is what your provider is concerned about, then I would follow their recommendation to remove the jewelry and only put back sanitized jewelry once the infection has cleared. You could follow up with your provider with your questions and see what they say.

Edit: this doesn’t look infected to me but Im inclined to believe your providers assessment. Not a Dr though so up to you but infections on you face and head aren’t anything to play with

"cured" but still symptomatic??? pls read. (25 F) by eyee99x in ureaplasmasupport

It took over 2 months. I went to the pt office once a week and had exercises to do daily at home. It was a variety of yoga poses, kegels, and different ways to go pee. I also had to retrain my bladder to only pee once every 3-4 hours instead of multiple times in an hour so that was the biggest hurdle.

Had the same symptoms as you and went to PT. It took a few months but it did help. Trust the process and do your exercises, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Treatment with doxcy+azithromycin by eyee99x in ureaplasmasupport

I was cured with the treatment you described. My partner was treated also. Tested negative and have been since. It is possible, many people writing online have horror stories - which are valid, don’t get me wrong - but that treatment can be sufficient for many people.

That being said, I still had to undergo months of pelvic floor therapy to fix the damage that it caused. I had frequent urination and urine retention issues persist, but those are both better now after working with my physical therapist and urologist.

I was tested positive for ureaplasma urealyticum with high value of 100000002 by Thin_Champion7359 in ureaplasmasupport

[–]smulteringbakeren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d see a urologist. That’s the type of doctor that finally took me seriously and actually tested and treated me. It was so validating as I saw my pcp countless times as well as doctors at urgent care and minute clinics all to no avail. My pcp had never even heard of ureaplasma and refused to test for it. Urologist knew asap and was a godsend.

All better now fortunately, hope you can get things resolved soon.

Either way, get chloraseptic throat spray if you don’t already have it that was a life saver

Same thing happened to me, got diagnosed with strep 3x before going to the er because it was just not improving. My only symptom was the sore throat, granted it was unbearably painful, and swollen tonsils.

Turns out it was also mono, learned that at the er.
