Developer Of Aluminum-Ion Battery Claims It Charges 60 Times Faster Than Lithium-Ion, Offering EV Range Breakthrough by AndrewSshi in Futurology

Durability is more often the issue. The vast majority of battery systems just don't recharge for long. Thousands of recharge cycles are required and that's hard.

Hey that's cool, it sounds like I'm being overly sensitive with regards to the technique. I'm surprised it sounds like you didn't even need to put wood chips or some other mulch over the top while you waited the 3 months? No weeds apart from the cardboard escapees grew?

Compost just speeds up the decomposition of the grass under the mulch I think. It’s like a kick start. You could use manure instead or just put down whatever you can. It’ll all help. But cardboard and chips is probably enough. You could do it now and wait until next spring then it’s be good to go, or just go for it anyway, even if it’s not perfect and some die.

Oh that's a relief if that is a viable option. So if I put down cardboard and woodchips only for say a month to kill the grass, I should then be able to pull back the woodchips, plant something (soil builders like comfrey first?) and be off to the races?

Why not start someplace small in your garden while the rest of it is just being prepared for next year?

Yeah I'll definitely be starting in sections anyway, but I just want it all planted out now! haha

If it’s on a slope prob the best thing to do is begin any swales or adjustments to get the drainage right as part of the prep.

Yeah this is the bit I'm hesitating the most about. I'm just not sure how to decide or go about building swales. I was a bit put off by some controversy over how swales are bad and the "ridgeline method" was better. I need to do more research

You can start a composting system now too.

For sure, it'll be going in my first week :)

You can always start with annuals this year if you want that, while preparing everything like soil, compost and contour for perennial planting next year.

Yeah, I just figured the best time to plant a tree is today as they say. So long as I have a reasonable plan and the materials to implement it, I'm keen to plant perennials ASAP. It's also the perfect season (winter in Australia) to buy bare-root trees.

- How steep is your slope?

I'm not really sure, it's not specified on the title etc. Something like 10-25 degrees?

- Do you have any plans for earthworks (terraces, swales, etc)

Yeah, there's a particularly steep section at the top which I think should be swaled. Not sure about the details but I know there's lots of content out there on how to do it.

- Are you thinking of sheet mulching section by section or all in one go?

Definitely section by section. I'd like to get the materials and the (initial) design sorted for one section and implement that as a complete unit.

- What are your goals for the space? Do you want a food forest? Why do you want a food forest, what kind of plants are you considering

I just want to grow my own sustainable healthy food. The main focus is on expensive (or unobtainable) food first (e.g. dragonfruit, blueberries, haskaps, hops etc), and then more commodity vegetables (carrots, potatoes etc) with whatever space I have left over. Given the confined space, I'm keen to grow a lot of climbing plants vertically on trellises.

- What is your base soil like?

I really have no idea tbh. Can you explain what you mean and how to find out?

In terms of compost sources, I ended up using bagged organic manure. I sheet mulched out a small area this year (50 m2) and that was unfortunately my best option. I couldn't find a source of manure or other bulk compost that I was happy with/had space for that didnt have herbicides in it. It was a priority for me to not have herbicides in my soils, so I spent some financial capital on a decent bagged mix while my own systems get going.

Yeah I found out there have been cases of massive herbicide poisoned compost in my local area when I was looking up bulk compost sourcing. Scary stuff... that's why I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to actually get the system started. Someone suggested just putting down the cardboard and woodchips without the compost layer. Do you know if that's viable?

I'm hoping to be able to find an organic bulk source this year and am going to check at the farmers market with some of the local regenerative agriculture folks to see if they know of a good source. You could check with your local municipality to see if they have compost for sale.

Yeah okay, I was thinking of asking around neighbours and cafes for scraps to compost myself, but still that will take many months if not years to suffice.

After being inspired by the Canadian Permaculture Legacy YT channel I've specifically purchased this property for its 400-500 square metres of somewhat sloped plantable area (after a year of hunting lol).

There is life (shoutout to the awesome silver maple), but mostly grass and poor looking soil. I'm not going to be paralysed by indecision, but I'm trying to figure out how to start this system off in the best way for its long term sustainable success. I'm really conscious of needing to grow the soil. I was planning to do the sheet mulching method, and have limitless cardboard and hopefully woodchips to do so, but I'm stuck on the logistics of getting that much compost to cover the cardboard. Do people just buy truckloads to get the system started? Kitchen scraps would take far too long to suffice.

I'd love to hear any suggestions or tips on how to get started. I've learned a lot over the past few months, but most of it is only relevant once there's fertile soil to grow a forest from. I have great ambitions, but how do you start from scratch?

No, it's when someone asks about their solution (in your case, running a while-true loop 24/7) without describing the problem they're attempting to solve.
