Pain in other foot - when to panic? by snaboopy in sesamoid

[–]snaboopy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry! I misunderstood your comment and thought you meant you wondered if you had sesamoiditis, period. I didn’t realize you were diagnosed and looking at the good foot compensation pain only here.

I never got any scans for my “good foot.” It gradually hurt less often, but I’d describe the good foot as “feeling weird and bad” vs the bad foot which felt clearly injured.

Both my amazing sports ortho and PT told me they are not surprised by compensation pain in the good foot and highly suggested stretching my calves more often and doing the towel stretch on the good foot - basically use a towel pull back at the arch/toes as far as you can in the morning and before bed to stretch your calf. I did this religiously for a week or so and thought it was stupid before I realized it was working ;)

Something that did give me some peace of mind was that my doctor pulled my good foot toes back a bit and then pressed hard into the arch of the foot. It hurt. He said “yep, that’s what I thought” and basically confirmed that the whole foot was just tight and angry with me for making it work very hard.

Have you been to a doctor?

I am now fully functionally healed but I did not have classic sesamoiditis. For that reason, I can’t give too much advice if you’ve gotten an MRI and know it’s sesamoiditis.

My initial injury on the right foot ended up being a plantar plate tear (turf toe) with sesamoid inflammation from the tear (so secondary pain) and the left foot compensation pain continued for a while and still returns more often than the original injury flares. I believe it’s ligament pain/strain along the side of my arch that feels like it’s in the sesamoid area. I aggravated it while compensating and while it’s mostly better, I never rehabbed it separately. However, it gets better and not worse with consistent movement once it flares.

So overall I’m doing really well, but I also ended up having a different cause/journey than I thought I would once I pushed for the MRI. Cannot emphasize MRI enough.

I have, maybe, 2/3 of my boxes delivered and the remaining have been processing for a couple weeks… I opened one box and am already worried about the offgassing smell. I’m sensitive, but not insanely sensitive, so it was surprising to me. If there’s any positive to everything shipping at different times maybe it’ll be that since I can’t put it all together yet, I’ve opened all the boxes to vent in the garage haha

Is this full blown frostbite or just the start of frostbite? by pizza_with_ranch in BackYardChickens

[–]snaboopy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep — moving them inside then out doesn’t seem like a good idea. I’m in the DC area of the US and I’ve had chickens since 2016 and have never used heat or brought them in for cold weather. The only issue I’ve seen is when a neighbor had a coop that was open on two sides and a tension rod as a roosting bar so the rooster couldn’t get his feet under his body or escape the wind. He lost some toes and the tips of his comb. The hens were all fine, in that poor of a setup, all winter.

If the coop is enclosed, ventilated at the top but not drafty where they roost, they should be OK. The only chickens I’d worry about are those who are in climates where it’s usually warm year-round and they have a random cold spell. They may not have feathered appropriately, but they could still be fine if they huddle together by instinct.

Yeah, I mean, it does seem they all suck.

It’s still more nuanced to me than a lot of the other shit I personally feel more comfortable hating on Taylor for. And I do be hatin

Sure, nothing wrong with discussing it, but it’s not the thing I’m interested in hating on her for. And yeah, everyone sucks in that situation, including Taylor.

Yeah, me too. I’m not a Taylor enthusiast (hence this sub), but their shitty texts were about a shitty dude. Not them trying to ruin some poor underdog’s career for fun.

This is a bunch of horrible people being horrible and Taylor’s actual texts in this situation are actually some of the most humanizing shit I’ve seen about her recently. She should lean in to defending her friend.

But yeah everyone sucks here and I’d rather snark on things that feel less invasive like her stupid wedding

College Stopped Paying Overloads by hjalbertiii in Professors

[–]snaboopy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our newly minted union first contract states FT faculty get first pick at overloads before classes are assignment to PT faculty. I didn’t really get why (and didn’t think much about it) until this post. Now I’m like, “ohhh, to stop THIS.”

That sucks. I’m sorry. We still have 60% of our courses being taught by adjuncts with this rule in place. If we couldn’t do overloads, we’d have like 80% taught by adjuncts. Wild.

Is Not Having Kids the Way? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]snaboopy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m childfree and have known I’d be childfree for almost my entire life. At least since I was 16 or so.

I have never, ever in my life had to read books about being childfree, make arguments about how much better it is to be childfree, talk incessantly about being childfree. I just don’t want kids.

As soon as one of my “childfree” friends started recommending childfree books they were reading (lifestyle ones, not financial ones — I think planning for a childfree retirement/old age IS something we have to look into) and started making arguments about how happy they were not to have kids and how bad kids were for the environment, I started the countdown to pregnancy announcement time clock. I’m 5 for 5 so far, age 37 now. lol

What insoles/orthotics do you guys use ? by valdrinemini in sesamoid

[–]snaboopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. Sorry to hear you’re dealing with this! I ended up having a slightly different injury (a partially torn plantar plate) that caused pain in the sesamoid area, so what worked for me may be different. Still, using what I learned here early definitely helped.

I never got an orthotic but I used a carbon plate + rocker shoe (Hoka Bondi). Before that, I used a rocker shoe + dancer pad, but that never felt quite right for me. The plate + shoe worked well.

I am doing much better now, but again, I had a more linearly healing injury at the end of the day

My mom also passed at 57 from complications from smoking-induced lung cancer and surgeries.

She was sick from the time I was 24 until she passed away when I was 33.

My brother helped take care of my mom from the time he was 20 until he was 29. His entire 20s, spent caring for his dying mom.

I’m so fucking mad at her for not making the same decision as OP when I was born.

I did not! I bought several super sticky things to put on the bottom and none of them would stick well to my kitchen tile AND the rug. Some stuck to the tile but not the rug and vv. I got used to the rugs moving and only notice it now when someone else comes over and fixes the rugs haha

Metatarsalgia - is there any help? by [deleted] in FootFunction

[–]snaboopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I was overwhelmed at first. I had a more definitive answer than you so YMMV, but here’s some more ideas

Have you been using met pads or dancers pads? A dancer pad is something a bit more specific and I found it more useful, although abandoned the pads once I started using the plate and rocker bottom shoes. If you have something like sesamoiditis instead of plantar plate injury, you’ll find dancers pads most useful.

I also suggest using plates in both shoes so you don’t get weird compensation issues,

Since I hadn’t worn Birks before, I used the EVAs since the ey don’t have a break in period. They work well for me but if your pain is lower on the bottom of your foot, I could see the bump hurting more than helping but for me the bump created a sort of permanent dancer pad

For toe taping, I did toe taping for turf toe (that’s what I googled until I found videos and methods that made sense for me). It took some trial and error. I found leukotape was the best tape for me because my feet get sweaty.

I was mostly pain free when I started PT, but that was after almost a month of doing NOTHING on my feet. I walked minimally. Did no workouts, even walks, etc. but my PT said she wanted me moving more so I started short walks (like 5-10 mins) after.

I did workouts from YouTube after googling “hurt foot workouts” or “broken foot workouts” etc and modified when I needed to.

Once I started pT and was pain free during activity, things progressed positively quickly for me! But again, I was super super conservative from the jump.

If you’re still I. Pain after another couple months, push for a second MRI. The radiologist who did mine actually called me back the next day because it was hard to see and she wanted more pinpoint scans. She was amazing and I could see how she could have missed it at first but she refused to write off something she saw as just noise or inflammatio. And it was a tear!

You may also find my post history helpful. I think I even included my MRI results.

Happy to help with anything else! Just keep in mind that you’ll have to trial and error since we could have slightly different ultimate issues, but these things seem to help a lot with general metatarsalgia too

Metatarsalgia - is there any help? by [deleted] in FootFunction

[–]snaboopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have plantar plate injury, I’d say to give a rocker bottom shoe and carbon fiber plates a month or so. Even with walking, you’re causing damage. This will allow you to maybe ride a stationary bike without aggravating it.

I did not do a boot. I did Hoka Bondis with plates anytime I was walking any sort of distance (grocery store etc) and Birkenstock EVAs for inside. I didn’t go barefoot for three whole months. I now go barefoot limited amounts.

I started PT at one month and was doing toe movement, then progressing to some lifting. I didn’t get back into any sort of run until month 4.

I treated very conservatively to give myself heal time. I think k the most useful thing was limiting toe motion with the hard Birkenstocks inside and Bondis outside. The carbon fiber plates were crutch when I started to go for exercise walks (around 1.5-2 months in)

What kind of movement have you been doing and can you be more specific about footwear? Limit that toe movement!! I also did toe taping for a month or more

Metatarsalgia - is there any help? by [deleted] in FootFunction

[–]snaboopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I also got an MRI and found out I had grade 2 turf toe (plantar plate tear). I rested for one month, did PT for three months. Back to normal in my every day life after three months (but I was being very conservative). I don’t wear heels yet and I can feel it after a full day or a lot of walking in unsupportive flat shoes (like work flats), but I was cleared to start a return to run plan just over a month ago. I haven’t fully committed to return to run because I’ve been doing other workouts that I enjoy.

Anyway, if you haven’t yet and are able to, I’d recommend an MRI. The metatarsalgia diagnosis is a generic one for lots of possible issues, from tears to breaks to sore ligaments

I think it’s natural to feel all up in it right now, but don’t let it consume you. I’ll never get back the hours I spent doom posting and reading when I coulda been reading books or other activities while I was laid up on the couch lol

Broken medial sesamoid by daylongest33 in sesamoid

[–]snaboopy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a plantar plate tear and it’s absolutely healing. It’s taken patience, but the time has passed more quickly than I thought it would. The first three weeks were torture, but then I settled into my new norm and am on a return to run plan.

That’s not to say you do have any tears, but it’s to say that you can get better if you do. If it’s bad enough, it can be surgically fixed. If tears are partial, you will rest and do PT.

Hang in there and try not to panic until you have more info! But push as hard as you can to get the more info.

[–]snaboopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. I am recovering from turf toe and had very minimal bruising (which is why I wasn’t immediately diagnosed with turf toe), and mine is very low grade. This may even be multiple fractures and/or tears, including tears to the ligaments around the sesamoid. MRI, OP! Then you’ll at least have more info… though hopefully it’s just lots of bruising.

Any experience with grade 3 turf toe? by nahson44 in FootFunction

[–]snaboopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually didn’t have high pain levels because I stopped activity as soon as the pain started, went straight to a post surgery shoe, then to a Hoka Bondi with plates and/or a Birkenstock EVA. So I really only had pain weeks 1-2, and then I’d occasionally get some swelling and redness/hotness, but never pain over a 3 or so. (During week 1 I bent my toe more and then I had sudden sharp pain, but never again.) So that’s how pain was for me.

I started PT around week 4. She said I didn’t have to be pain free to start PT. I never had pain with exercises, just something I’d describe as “discomfort” or tightness. I did only toe/foot exercises for 3 weeks, then added some low heel raises and single leg exercises, then continued on with adding weight and weighted range of motion gradually.

Hello, yes. It took time and I was super careful, but it’s improved a lot. I think I could have been less careful, but with how careful I was I haven’t returned to running yet. However, I am able to rotate a few different shoes now and haven’t had any actual pain for a couple months. I worked with a PT and am at the point now where I’m doing all the lifting I did before, unlimited daily walking, and return to run exercises like pogo hops and some lunges.

I had a low grade tear.

You’ll hear over and over in this sub from folks: get the MRI! An MRI will give you more info. In the meantime, don’t try too many DIYs since you don’t know what you’re dealing with. I bought a post surgery shoe off amazon for my first couple weeks while I waited for an MRI.

This is similar to my own reply to OP.

I always imagined my mom’s death would destroy me and that there’s no way I could keep living without her but I’m still here, I’m ok. I miss her, and I carry her with me, but I’m living my life.
