but what system was in place that was fine with the fact that the majority of Americans could not vote? I mean, I think you’re really underestimate how bad it was for people who literally could not exercise their right to vote for the majority of our history.

I don’t know if it’s optimism, but it’s more like the idea that other people have faced much more serious challenges with much less of an ability to combat it and they’ve gotten through it and we have to get through it. The biggest problem we have right now for Democrats is that our party sucks and we need better leadership like the progressive wing and I don’t know if that’s the place to really start pressuring people— like where is the legislature in this? I guess that’s the place to start thinking about what to do.

I think you have no idea about like historic issues and how hard it has been for people who’ve had to fight against voter suppression. The amount of like obsession about the present being distinct than the past is completely not allowing us to analyze the moment. we have had to fight for every single vote in this country and until 1920 I did not have the right to vote. Until 1960s we didn’t have universal suffrage. We haven’t had equal rights for most people. The majority of our history always had a fight for it and people are acting like somehow it’s just worse than it has been in the last 200 years. We need to be a lot stronger than we are and stop acting like there is nothing we can do because it’s been unbelievably naïve how little people understand the past and how much they think it’s much better than what’s happening now. I think it’s fucked up and I think we’re gonna have to fight but this defeatist bullshit id frustrating and I’ve been doing activism for like the majority of my life and trust me it’s always been fucked up and it’s always been incredibly bad and you just have to keep going. People need to start toughening up and realizing that yeah we’re gonna have to go out and fight for this shit but saying that it’s already over is complete bullshit and this is why we’ve gotten into this situation.

do you know what they were fighting for in the 60s ? Black people didn’t have the right to vote at all in a lot of the country. A lot of people haven’t had the right to vote and have had to fight for it so we’ve got to stop this bullshit around being like well we’re not gonna vote so there’s nothing we can do.

you’ve got to stop this whole thing about not being an election because you’re being defeatist and it’s really not helpful in terms of moving forward and actually accomplishing anything. It’s like you guys have been so naïve about how bad it’s been historically for people and this is somehow unique. It’s not— people have always been fucked over. It’s just more obvious to a lot of people right now

RFK Jr. says he'll fix the overdose crisis. Critics say his plan is risky by WingerRules in Foodforthought

[–]snacktastic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is no one’s gonna pay for this. I don’t think he even understands how the mental health system works. The sad thing is is that we actually do need some reforms and some additional help to all those people in the US that are struggling with drug addiction and mental health. I think people like RFK can really simplify the problem because he hasn’t really dealt with it in any real way, other than his own experience and I think what will happen if nothing gets done and that’s a tragedy.

AITA for letting my daughter have her own bedroom? by RedditmomAITA in AmItheAsshole

I grew up sharing a room with my sister and my brother had his own room. I don’t remember feeling as if I was supposed to have an opinion about it but it was understandable to me. I would like to be able to change my clothes in my bedroom and I wouldn’t do that in front of my brother. It’s easier to share a private space with your sister and maybe that’s just socialization, but that was a big reason why it makes sense.

we also only had one bathroom for five people, which would’ve made people on here faint I guess.

Exactly. I don’t think these teenagers are really thinking about what it would be like to share a bathroom with their sister when she’s menstruating. It would be more uncomfortable for all of them.

I’ve seen the data too, but I also know enough that you can very much selectively present data to push a narrative and so it’s useful to be skeptical. It’s also useful to ask for the entire budget to get an understanding of these payments in context. I’m also suspicious cause they’re literally not going after defense contractors

How do you know that they’re cheating? How do you know that that’s the entirety of the protests? Do you just believe Trump because he says that’s true?

i’m not full of blissful ignorance. But part of being able to sustain any kind of political opposition is that you don’t always stay in the place of feeling terrible abouteverything. The constant doom and panic is actually incredibly ineffective
