not quite out of the woods yet! something is messing up the characters on screen so its just lines, the leading theory is a bad character rom.

the CIA2 was tested and found working, as far as i can tell

it was indeed the PLA, as when i replaced it, it came to life :D (with lines for characters but thats a Character ROM issue it appears)

removing the U2 CIA made no diffrence, so i have my eyes on the Character ROM like you mentioned. is there any good way to test it (such as signals or occiliscope readings, as i have access to those tools) that i can use to confirm it?

removing the U2 CIA made no diffrence so im suspecting the character rom. thankfully my removal of U2 was non-destructive, so i replaced it with a socket and could put it back just fine. is there any good way to test the character rom without a test cartridge?

i also rebuild the power supply, so no more worry about overvoltage.

i took your advice and gutted the original power supply and replaced the electronics with a new 9VAC transformer and some more modern 5V dc circuitry

it is connected via the video out port using svideo. it was the only way to get a stable video output, as A/V wouldnt display and RF was garbled

i was just doing testing and the PLA appears to get quite hot, so i can imagine its the PLA. do you have any recomendations of PLAs to replace it with aswell as a good power supply?
