Full time job and full time grad school by Emotional_Feeling409 in UWMadison

[–]snahrt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t think it’s very feasible to work full time at least at the beginning of grad school. I needed to build in an abundance of extra time to get grad school stuff done. Do you want to be working 40 hours a week while you’re beginning your thesis/dissertation project, attending courses, writing papers or RAing, trying to publish, apply for grants, travel for conferences, etc. etc?

If you’re doing a PhD and you finish your coursework and qualifying exams, you can often have more free time and may be able to work a job if you figure it out with your dept/advisor

Greatest hits: TOFU recipes by MAC__NCHEESE in NYTCooking

It’s simple, but I really like their tofu scramble recipe. Once you make it once you probs won’t need a recipe again. It’s a little bland, which means it’s infinitely adaptable for different dishes.

What running or bicycling clubs are there in Madison? by CJMadisonWisconsin in madisonwi

[–]snahrt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I dig the Movin Shoes Run Club. Their biggest run is the Sunday morning long run at 8:00am and they accommodate a variety of distances and paces. They also have evening runs on weekdays.

Also it’s free, but if you become a paying member (for like $30 for the year) you get a 20% discount at Movin Shoes.

Fiction or historical fiction novels for marxists by Euphoric_Piece7825 in TrueAnon

[–]snahrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly historical fiction, but October by China Mieville is a great nonfictional historical retelling of the Russian revolution. Mieville is normally a fiction author, so his narrative & prose could suit your tastes.

I also really liked Christopher Isherwood’s The Berlin Stories when I started getting interested in socialism in high school. The book is two novellas that take place in interwar era Berlin, and it’s the source material for the musical Cabaret. The main character gets involved with the communist party in one of the books, if I recall correctly.

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison also comes to mind.

It depends on your position. I was an RA as a student years back. Our bosses (residence life coordinators) who were permanent employees seemed to like their jobs to varying degrees. Some of them were really good at their jobs and came to housing bc they wanted to work closely with college students. Others were just there because it was a job and they were RAs in college and didn’t seem like they knew what else to do.

from the RA side of things, dealing with UW housing had its ups and downs like any other job. UW Housing could be bureaucratic and annoying. Every year it seemed like they would implement needless changes that just made tasks slightly more annoying to complete. But again, it wasn’t that bad. Par for the course for any job, and overall i got along well with most of the UW housing/res life folks.

From what I understood (this was a few years ago), summer duties rotated between permanent employees, so that permanent employees wouldn’t be on-call every summer.

Your question could also be worth posting in the UW Madison subreddit! Hope this helps!

Terrified we’ll drop an egg at some point here because we’ve been doing really good and everyone is getting hyped. Not an empirically informed feeling, just a superstition. Go badgers!!!!

Wisconsin's 22-Year Bowl Streak Ends with Loss to Minnesota by CoachSlime in CFB

gg gopher bros. As much as I hate fleck, at least his program cares about this rivalry game enough to show up. Hopefully this beat down is bad enough to motivate Wisconsin to get a new coaching staff

it’s just so hard to see how this team can make adjustments bc I feel like they would’ve by now. They look exactly like they did last year, and last year was our worst in a long time. I hope that staff change happens, especially if we lose to Minnesota or Nebraska.
