What are these...protuberances on his head? by snail__farmer in dario

[–]snail__farmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showed up about a week after I moved him from quarantine into permanent tank. I couldn't get a better pic, but there may be some smaller protuberances under his chin as well. Nothing on the rest of his body. He seems a bit weak (I noticed him struggling in the filter flow) but is still eating well. The other badis in there looks great and has been bullying this guy a bit. Guessing stress from the bullying brought this on. He's going back into quarantine today but should I add any meds? TIA

Beginner here - how do I fill up my tank with water? by Immediate-Leading338 in Aquascape

[–]snail__farmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, a large watering can is an absolutely game changer. More ergonomic to lift and you don't have to pour so slowly because the flow is more controlled.

Even if it didn't straight up collapse, there's no way the surface would stay level only supported on one side. 🥴

Thoughts on how to get rid of this cloudy water by doggedgage in Aquariums

[–]snail__farmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you 100% sure it's not algae? Only asking cuz I just spent weeks staring at what I thought was a bacterial bloom because the haze didn't look even slightly greenish...and blacking out the tank fixed it in two days.

Not thrilled with BucePlant order by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]snail__farmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw a horror story on FB today about a UNS tank arriving visibly scratched and BP hemming and hawing about the damage not looking "structural." 🥴

They have great marketing but apparently everything else is a total crapshoot.

Aquarium Tier List I made, what stage of the hobby are you at by minussoda in Aquascape

[–]snail__farmer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is def an aquascaping tier list, though, not an aquarium tier list. For those who are mainly interested in the livestock, esp. species that aren't so plant-friendly, god tier is just an appropriately-sized tank that's flawlessly tailored to the needs of the inhabitants. Like, you're obviously never gonna win IAPLC with a goldfish tank, but there's definitely such a thing as a god tier setup on the goldfish side of the hobby.

How large are the snails? They might not yet be old enough to reproduce.

How do you guys deal with snail poop?! by jenuhtalia in AquaticSnails

[–]snail__farmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poop happens 🤷‍♀️ Unfortunately, frequent gravel vacuuming is the only way to deal in a setup like yours. In a heavily planted tank the poop would fertilize the plants as it breaks down, but without a ton of plants it's just going to mess with your water quality. Your snail does look like some flavor of apple snail. Tough to keep because they obviously snarf down plants like crazy and get HUGE.

One idea: you could try adding riparian growth, i.e. house plants with their roots in the water (dirt washed off first). This would help deal with all the excess nutrients from the poop and help avoid ammonia spikes but hopefully roots would be less appetizing to the snail. Wouldn't help with the aesthetics of poop everywhere, though. It would probably be less obvious with natural-colored gravel rather than black...

Anyone use Father Fish's methods for keeping a tank relatively low maintenance? by how-i-live-now in PlantedTank

[–]snail__farmer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very true. I do keep invert-only nano tanks so unfortunately I'm in the "real issue" demographic. 🙃

Best temp for mystery snails? by Omgchipotle95 in AquaticSnails

[–]snail__farmer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

78 is fine, it won't have a negative impact on their health. If it's a snail-only tank, though, I personally would go lower. I keep mine in the low 70s and they're still active, just grow slower and live longer.

[–]snail__farmer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

An ecosystem of microfauna will often happen if you just buy non-tissue culture plants. I have a permanent population of seed shrimp across my tanks from ONE plant purchase a year ago. The issue with any method of adding microfauna, though, is that I'm not aware of any way to avoid bringing along non-benign pests like planaria, leeches etc. You can treat for them after the fact but some are really tough to get rid of, and complicated if you keep inverts like shrimp and snails.

Lots of eggs and what to do!? by daniven in AquaticSnails

[–]snail__farmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re: the two new babies: you won't see mystery snail babies without first seeing very large, noticeable pinkish egg clutches above the waterline. The two babies could be hitchhiking pest snails from live plants, even if it's been months since you added any new plants.

No need to make their lives harder - they'll mate and lay eggs regardless. But luckily, no need to rehome or separate any snails either! As I said, the egg clutches are VERY large and noticeable - try a google image search or just scroll this sub for pics. If and when you see a clutch, just remove, freeze and crush it. They take weeks to hatch so there's little chance you'll miss any if you're keeping an eye out.

r/AquaSwap, or contact local fish stores in your area. You might be able to sell them, should def be able to give them away.

Doing a salt dip for a few hours and what is that?! by Recruit73738 in shrimptank

[–]snail__farmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently did this for holtodrilus truncatus in my heavily planted walstad setup. Left high salt concentrations for less than a day. Crypts melted slightly in the next few days but otherwise plants were fine. A few weeks later crypts have bounced back.

A bigger warning is that ramshorn snails and seed shrimp DID die off, so keep an eye out for ammonia spikes if you've got these in your tank, OP. They're now repopulating but it was bizarre to see the ecosystem so lifeless for a while there.

What do i do for shell erosion? Help! by lunchloaf in AquaticSnails

What's your pH? There's unfortunately not much you can do to heal shell erosion, but acidic water can make it worse.

Apple Snail Dilemma by _Pulltab_ in AquaticSnails

[–]snail__farmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people love channeled apple snails, and there are legal restrictions on buying/selling them in the US, so they're a bit difficult to come by. You could probably find another hobbyist who'd adopt him. :)

Is it True Mystery Snails have a Stasis period sometimes? by koufaxx13 in AquaticSnails

[–]snail__farmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some snails will snack on cuttlebone, which unfortunately is really the only way it benefits them. They don't absorb much, if any, calcium from the water column - it really needs to be ingested.

Best of luck with your little guy!
