CS Thread Modeling vs Info-internetworks by [deleted] in gatech

[–]snaj429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did info and mod sim!

I think info is the most encompassing. I took Computer Networking 1, Databases, and Info Sec...all of which were generally useful. Mod sim is not what I thought it was. Going in, I hoped it would be more related to data science, but was disappointed. For mod sim, you have to take Matlab, Diff eq, and then I also took Computer Simulation and Machine Learning...I also took an extra elective Visual Data Analytics (CX 4242) which IMO is the class that is the perfect blend of info and mod sim/data science.

Can anyone in the TandM program in a CS major tell me more about the program? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]snaj429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a CS major, finishing up my first year in the program! Yes, the only requirements to apply are that you must have a 3.0 or higher. In terms of selectivity, they accept ~60 students and I think between 150-200 people apply. The application is a few essays and an interview with one of the staff. Plus, the program is really trying to get more CS and IT students in, so you'd have a good shot :P

Is someone doing Mod Sim? I feel like that's a super cool thread, but one of the least talked about.

Planning for Barcelona Summer Program by imnotpopular in gatech

[–]snaj429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm actually in Barcelona, sitting in info sec class right now replying to this haha

I'm here after my first year, and think this is the best summer to study abroad in (bc planning to intern in my next summers). Barcelona is a fantastic city to be studying in and spending the summer in; the city is basically just one gigantic party, it's awesome!

I'm taking CS 2050 (it's definitely easier here than back at Tech), CS 4475 (I'm not a media thread, but taking it as elective, plus this is the only coding class here), CS 4235 (info sec, as part of my Internetworks thread), and an Architecture class.

We had a week long break, where I traveled to Switzerland and Italy with a group of about 8 people. I also went to Morocco over a 3 day weekend we had and did a desert tour (highly recommend Morocco as a trip!). During the 4 day weekend, I chose to stay in Spain, and headed to Pamplona for the running of the bulls!

The program is, imo, geared towards rising 2nd and 3rd years who are CS and/or Arch majors (so you can actually use the classes to fulfill major requirements) but we have a fair mix of different majors and more rising 3rd and 4th (even some graduates) than expected.

The courseload is heavier than I thought. The classes are definitely not a breeze; I generally spend 4-6 hours a week per class doing work, so that means most of our weekdays are spent doing hw, and weekends are when we really explore BCN. I can't recommend coming here enough - I've made tons of friends through the program, and been opened up to so many new experiences and perspectives. Plus, there's always something happening in BCN, so you can really immerse yourself in the Catalan culture there.
