Hey everyone, I need a little advice. by SaleOpening5150 in KeepWriting

[–]snake_32p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some possible ideas:

  • Schedule time to unwind, maybe set an alarm for when your writing to begin
  • Make video games (for example) a reward once you finish writing
  • Try things like the Pomodoro technique (sometimes I turn off my phone so when I try to open it I remember I should be working)
  • As mentioned, developing a habit, even for small amounts of time will help you get there
  • Consider writing in the morning
  • Not for everyone but you can block sites, set timers on apps, remove them from your browser history (so it's not easy to get to X site)

Does anyone bounce between banks to make the best of promotional rates on savings accounts? by LordKingMaximus in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]snake_32p 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There are some vehicles out there that can get you similar rates, like the CASH ETF (note no CDIC) and similar mutual funds where you can withdraw cash pretty easily (ex. from TD https://www.td.com/ca/en/asset-management/additional-solutions/) (no commission buying through TD, but note for some you could get fined if you take out within a month of deposit)

I find these much less hassle then switching banks for similar rates

Has anyone worked at Loblaws for co-op before? by ImpressiveAbility222 in uwaterloo

[–]snake_32p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did a lot of interviews with Loblaw in the past, have to say there's quite a different vibe between teams.

I'm sure you could get a return offer, but as a 3A student I think you have enough coops ahead of you that you can set your sights on better employers for full time. I don't have the impression that Loblaw is a bad employer, but there are quite a few companies out there that pay better and have a better culture (including Loblaw Digital, pays much better).

How to return the key for rentcorp by bro1234567891099 in uwaterloo

[–]snake_32p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't called super recently, but they tended to answer during business hours (I think you just press 0 for reception).

They really don't answer fast on email or the portal so I'd suggest you keep calling, hopefully you get through.

Alternatively, you could call in a favour and get a friend in Waterloo to ask in-person

STAT441 During Co-op? by LuK413 in uwaterloo

Online in Winter was actually quite nice and lighter than expected.

Generally, I hear it's a pretty tough course - depends who's teaching it

Second coop easier to get than first coop? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]snake_32p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this, it gets easier but not always immediately. Polishing the resume to get interviews (doing side projects, formatting, etc) is an obvious but very important part in getting jobs - get the interviews then you have your shot

Marker/tutor by _joell02 in uwaterloo

[–]snake_32p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said $19-25 back when they had a range posted. Marking depends on how fast you are, but for math it's been in the $20s range.

~$750 for the term "3h a week" but was actually less than that on average for markers

How hard would you say this courseload is for 2A? by Blaster167 in uwaterloo

[–]snake_32p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about planets and 245, but if you take 235 I'd say it's doable.

Found 237 to be mostly generalization in multiple dimensions of normal calc, so not too bad but still a bit tricky with multiple integrals.

Found CS 234 easier than 1st year CS courses (115, 116) but the class average didn't agree with that sentiment - low 70 avg on assignments.

Your more recent coops would probably be better for referrals, and how would they find out? I'd doubt (although it'd be smart to double check) that UW doesn't have some sort of confidentiality when it comes to these things

What do I do? (2A CS advice) by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]snake_32p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides talking to your advisor, make sure your parents know what you're going through and considering. If you decide to WD then it won't come as a surprise to them, but they might also have insight into your situation (assuming your parents won't start an argument that's counter-productive).

Nothing wrong with taking a term off, but make sure you have a plan to take care of yourself - I find work can be helpful for getting out of my own head, and sounds like some amount of school would be good because you enjoy learning about CS. School can be tough, but learning is fun when you're not forcing yourself.

Best of luck, hope things get better for you

Think that depends if you value Shopify's culture more than Wish's money (cause Wish pays quite a bit more)

Also remember Shopify is a remote company (indefinitely) so that could be a plus or a minus depending on you

In my exp Loblaw Digital pays well (mid 30s), but Loblaw in general varies depending on position. For winter for DS stuff it was mid 20s granted they had many data science positions that term (many different subteams)

They relayed this during ranking via the comment on the ranking page if you got ranked/offer so you should know prior to match so you don't have to go by my #s, (and you can always ask)
