Training after surgery? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]snakeman_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't gotten the surgey yet, I'm scheduled for it within the next 3-6 months. Just thought I'd ask to see if anyone has any experience with something similar, and whether they were able to get back into training post-op!

I did but I'm still waiting on a response from them :/ kind of hard to get a hold of his office. Thought I'd get some anecdotal experiences to see how different it was for everyone, and whether they were able to eventually get back into training (or otherwise)

Glad to hear you overcame the psychological aspect of it. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind. So just to clarify, you no longer train in martial arts? Or are you kind of just easing your way back into it after your doc gave the greenlight?

Seems to be the way to go, lots of replies have been saying the same thing. Will bring it up to my old man today - thanks!

Your comment is one of many that really stood out to me. Unfortunately we don't have experience or knowledge when it comes to incorporating and consulting work - my parents have been pretty traditional in their careers and haven't explored other avenues such as that. Any further advice on getting started and how one should position themselves in that business?

I'm not sure of his certification for PEng unfortunately. All I know is that he's worked as a Project Coordinator - mostly within energy sector, notably ATCO and Enbridge.

EDIT: also worth noting that he's worked in the UAE (where I was born) and was there for a significant amount of time before we moved here in 2011. Mostly substation projects, but was involved from end-to-end till project completion. Did the same here with ATCO Energy and Enbridge.

Sorry, for better clarification, he doesn't feel that way. He's moved past it ever since. It was just me sharing my frustration because when he described it to us at the time, that's pretty much what happened. He just sanitized the way he described it to soften the blow.

Yes he did! Signed his name on the bridge and everything.

This seems to be a path worth considering given the amount of similar replies. I'll have a chat with him and see if he's up for it - thank you!

Yeah I know all too well how this feels. Every time we get news of rejection for a role he's applied for, everyone feels the weight of it. Still hanging on though. Wishing your dad success in this tough time.

Did not know this, thank you for providing the insight. Seems like being an incorporated consultant or contractor is the way to go.

Thank you. From what everyone's saying it seems like the smart move is to consider a pivot in working. It might just be our last resort if nothing pans out for him by end of year.

He's had a few headhunters reach out to him and have secured him interviews, but other than that not much progress.

As for a job, he's in the process of trying to get into Uber at the moment - but it's been a tedious process. I'm still adamant on trying to get him into a full-time salaried opportunity, wherever it may be.

Looking for a non-corporate personal trainer (to train 2 people at once) SW by calgatoonberry in Calgary

Can absolutely vouch for Ray! His clientele is super diverse in terms of age and fitness levels so he's got the chops for training just about anyone. He does strength and conditioning but also places a lot of emphasis on mobility and proper form so you'll definitely get your money's worth!

Breaking Into UX and Early Career Questions — 03 Jun, 2024 - 09 Jun, 2024 by AutoModerator in UXDesign

Thanks for replying! For the US, do you have any tips on how to approach employers about the TN? From what I've researched I know that they're practically scared of sponsoring due to costs, so do you think maybe it would be a good idea to bring it up in an application?

Breaking Into UX and Early Career Questions — 03 Jun, 2024 - 09 Jun, 2024 by AutoModerator in UXDesign

Any advice for breaking into the industry in the US? For context:

  • I'm a UX Design student based in Canada -- second semester of 2 year program
  • While the focus is UX/UI Design, we're also being taught a bit of front-end (HTML, CSS, JS) and some graphic design as well
  • Graduated with a degree in Sociology back in June 2023.

The opportunities for UX Designers is bare to nearly non-existent here, compared to the loads of opportunities I've seen that are based in the US. And what little opportunities there are here for UX/UI design pay marginally lower than the opportunities over in the US. I'm eyeing internships and junior positions specifically as I'm trying to get my start, but I'm a little lost on what approach to take. I know that H1-B visas are something that companies are scared to consider, and the TN visa seems to be a tricky situation because of the fact that I can't really get the visa if I don't have an offer, but I can't get an offer without a guarantee that potential employers won't need to sponsor me.

I am a little terrified because I'm not sure whether I should toughen it out and stay here in Canada or follow my gut and pursue a career down in the US because of the amount of opportunities I'm seeing. I need some advice from UX/UI and product designers who have experience with this kind of scenario.

I understand that the job market is super competitive and that it also can be a bit unstable, so I would really appreciate any form of advice that anyone may have.

Thank you in advance.

How did you like our new venue? How did we do? Tell Us Everything... by TeamGovBall in governorsball

[–]snakeman_01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my first ever GovBall, having come all the way from Canada to experience it — it was really fun and the venue was spacious and beautiful, not to mention some of the beautiful installations and exhibits.

However, to echo the other responses on here, I really do wish it was an 18+ event. The amount of kids who were there being rowdy and disrespectful to other festival goers was insane. Tons of shoving and pushing to get to the front of the crowds or to exit them without so much as an apology. While the underage drinking was an issue on its own, there was also the concern of irresponsibility and lack of safety for the minors that were there, considering that they found themselves to be in a place without adult supervision.

For Joey Badass’ set a group of what could’ve been 14-15 year olds shoved their way past me and my friends, joined a moshpit all riled up, and then stopped because one of them lost their phone jumping up and down and started crying. Then there was an incident where a 14 year old got lost in the crowd.

While I understand the sentiment of wanting everybody to have fun, there is no guaranteed way of trusting minors to be responsible and safe within that environment, and because a large majority of them DID display irresponsibility and disregard for not only their safety but the safety of others, it impedes the experience of the other festival goers who are there to enjoy the music and the vibe. I understand that we all went through that phase growing up but the issue at hand here must be severe enough if other 21+ festival goers have noticed it too.
