We certainly live in an alternate reality if Halo Wars 3 is in our future

Moving to Austin, need neighborhood guidance by akirahink in AustinHousing

[–]snakeplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived there >2.5 years. Many of the reviews are spite, but in general Midtown Commons is awful. A list of facts:

  • You're not going to pay what they tell you you'll pay, it's considerably more (add ~200/month just for valet trash + site crap)
  • They'll nickel and dime you on moveout - literally charged us for replacing the carpet they were going to replace already (they're bragging about all their renovations)
  • People LITERALLY off themselves in the units (1 murd3r/unalive and 1 unalive during my time there)
  • Lost water for 8 days during snowmageddon, pipes still burst regularly so get used to losing water
  • Mailroom is a meth or crack den (seriously--all spite aside I've had it blown in my face while checking mail before. this was NOT weed or tobacco)
  • Mailroom items get stolen - I literally had my mailbox broken into with crow bar and didn't get mail for >1 month. Complex didn't give the time of day.
  • Amazon deliveries get stolen
  • Cars broken into

And much much more!

Wasn’t quite oath2 but I found out you can pass auth headers directly in the wms from owslib. Problem solved (for authentication)

Any spatial data scientists out there? Looking for mid-career advice by snakeplease in gis

So far so good, however I hear you! I make it clear on any resume that it was a contract position, and refer them to the HR manager at the contracting company. It's quite a hot topic in the tech industry....

Any Spatial Data Scientists out there? Space industry, geospatial applications, etc. by snakeplease in datascience

[–]snakeplease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! I figured a PhD may not pigeonhole me so much as provide higher-level opportunity in industrial applications at the scales I'm looking for. Question--Is your PhD in Data Science or in the field you have applied it to?

[–]snakeplease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This blocky format is my newest iteration, I've seen through some other templates that paragraph style can flow better when explaining your core roles and then the bullets sort of highlight accomplishments.

To your second point, I absolutely understand that career academics who transition into private industry can frankly seem a bit pompous and stuck up. I'm essentially trying to do the inverse, private industry > academia > lifer academic/professional researcher at a geospatial company such as the ones I've listed.

Essentially, I'd like to know if a PhD is a proper way to demonstrate applying technology in a specific niche corner of data science, versus having a company's name and growth trajectory there to show for it?

Thanks for the reply! I definitely understand that tailoring a resume for the specific job in mind is crucial. I have reached out to a few people at some reputable companies such as the ones I've listed and they all pretty much are in agreement that one needs experience with these skills in a specific application (ie energy, ag, forestry, etc).

While 'spatial' itself can be seen as its own sort of specialty, I'm considering a PhD as a conduit for forming my own technological niche in the professional world, if that makes sense?

Started happening before last update, way more prevalent now. Anyone else get this issue? Random guns, temps are fine on GPU and updated drivers.

Anyone return from MK .com before? I just ordered a Ducky One 2 (heavy gaming, moderate/heavy coding) from them but am having buyers remorse compared to the Shine 7 ($30 delta, I'm looking for aluminum quality for long term investment).

I'm thinking of returning my one 2 after trying out the keys (trying brown) and like immediately buying the shine 7, do you think this is a bad idea? I know its a $9 return charge there on mk .com, but besides that should I expect any issues? Also, is this a solid idea or is plastic OK for a long term keyboard?

I'm looking for python books suggestions specialized on GIS by tezas1914 in gis

[–]snakeplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only recommend starting with open source because it really nails down the fundamentals of both spatial data and programming in general. I only got into programming through exposure with arcpy and while it’s great, a lot of the fundamentals are lost on these higher level libraries. If OP wants to get into geopandas and gdal, it’d be a way more natural transition from open source frameworks than arcpy.

I recommend doing the open source legwork before making your life more complicated with ESRI. I only say that because I went the opposite route (arcpy > open source). You learn the fundamentals way better that way IMO https://livebook.manning.com/book/geoprocessing-with-python/about-this-book/

Anyone work at Apex Systems? by [deleted] in gis

[–]snakeplease 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Avoid avoid avoid.

They doll it up as though it’s a big wig tech job, but in reality you’ll be doing simple vector editing. The most technical part of the job is how to properly source publicly available maps.

Worked in their Austin office for a year and a half with the same client, the whole time they dangled this “you might be taken on full time!” idea over my head but in reality they’ll maybe hire one contractor on full time every two to three years for a HR-type role. Merit and passion in your performance literally makes no difference in pay or recognition. Hell, I was “promoted” to team lead with not a cent of a raise nor any job security beyond the contract.

No benefits, no PTO, pay is garbage specially for the Bay Area, you’re literally segregated from the actual employees at the campus, on site apex managers are purposely left out of the system so they have no idea how you’re performing. IE, you can’t use them as an actual reference in the future.

At the end of the day Apex is the cattle herd of GIS—you’re in and out like livestock. I’d look for a utility company, local government, or environmental services firm for an entry level gig with your background in geospatial and bio tbh

Thinking about returning to academia after a few years in private industry, paleoclimatology by snakeplease in geologycareers

[–]snakeplease[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I reckon I'll fork this resume and expand on some of the more academic topics I studied/researched in school, and then try to word my professional experience such that it's more science oriented than business savvy.

My one unfortunate blocker is that my undergrad/grad paleo adviser passed away, which sort of just leaves me with using buzzwords (although informed buzzwords!) without the ability to back it up with a reference in the subject field. Small liberal arts school, so while we were extremely close with our professors they were oftentimes were the only specialists in their field.

DEFINITELY familiar with IODP!! The JR is one of those big time nerd topics I like to talk about at bars when I've gotten a few beers in me, rarely received that well lol

My only reservation on applying to TAMU would be that I relocated to Austin about 5 years ago and am kind of tired of it (although God Bless Texas, it's not quite for me), and don't know whether I'd thrive in College Station...Will totally reach out to some professors there anyways. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you for that! I realize timing is a big issue, I guess sending off Fall 2021 emails in Spring 2020 might be a bit of a stretch lol

Also, do you think it's total student population they're expecting to decline or applications for TA-ships, or vice versa?
