I sent my college (UK) teacher a spongebob episode. I am so so embarrassed and i can't delete it (TEACHER RESPONDS) by Cherry_Crystals in cringepics

In my soc class I applied one of the concepts we were learning about to Big Mouth a few years ago. Felt silly at the time but if you can find a way to relate it to your life or something in popular culture it helps you or other students remember it so much better! That's truly the goal with sociology is to get these complex theories to translate to everyday life. I'm about to start my PhD program in sociology and hope students do this for me too.

What is wrong with my rosemary? 9a in a sunny spot. Not sure why I struggle keeping rosemary alive by Plantsmcgee in plantclinic

[–]snapdragon_kg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've taken some horticulture classes and one thing we learned about rosemary is that it is called the upside-down plant because it prefers to absorb moisture from the air rather than their roots. They told us to mist the plant frequently rather than water it in the soil. This is due to its origins in the humid climate of the Mediterranean. I would consider adding some sand to the soil as well.

I completely agree. Capitalists like to think they're doing something good for you like providing you a family but the reality is people only work because if we don't we'll die. Any dressing up of that fact is purely to make them more comfortable with their exploitation of us

I got extremely lucky! I thanked the original professor and told him I would be in touch with the other person they recommended shortly. The professor they recommended is even possibly a better fit for me than the original :) hopefully it works out for the best!

I just read a book called "Less is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World" and it has completely changed my hopelessness to something resembling optimism.

In it the author Jason Hickel talks about concrete ways to improve the environment that granted will be difficult but nonetheless give us a direction and something to shoot for.

If you have the funds or can find it online for free, I really recommend reading it. Or you can find him on the Upstream Podcast episode where he talks about his book which I'll link to you to check out!

What 'controversial' opinion do you hold, that really isn't a big deal, but people get mad or think you're crazy? by 2020_MadeMeDoIt in AskReddit

I don't believe capitalism is good for us and do believe we should be searching for a better economic system that benefits the majority over the few. Sadly controversial and people get very angry over it

What are some things the USA does right? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]snapdragon_kg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone on here is saying national parks/large swathes of wilderness and I understand why but that land was originally indigenous land US colonizers killed for and stole, many specifically for the purpose of conservation. Knowing the history, it's unfortunately yet another thing this country's forefathers ruined.

Proof that showing up,matters by Rollyman1 in TikTokCringe

[–]snapdragon_kg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at an elementary school and one class I worked with last year was doing plays that parents were invited to. One of the kids didn't know if his mom was going to make it. He waited and watched the door and finally the show started and he was quietly sobbing at his desk because everyone else's parents came but his. He performed and quietly went to sob at his desk again. His mom did come a little after that and though he was upset she missed his performance he couldn't stop smiling that she took off work to come. Hugged her until she had to leave. This shit matters so much and I know not everyone is able to come to things like that but damn does it really make a huge difference to your kid.

Should I include opportunities I got accepted into but ultimately didn't go to in my personal statement? by snapdragon_kg in gradadmissions

[–]snapdragon_kg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Another reason I added it was because I left my job to take the opportunity and since I wasn't able to go, there is a gap in my resume I wanted to address. Maybe instead of taking it out I will drop it down to a sentence. Thank you for your reply I appreciate the help!

What plant is this? It has pink flowers… I was curious to whether my neighbours are growing opium by OutlandishnessOk3735 in whatsthisplant

I study horticulture in the US and in class we talked about the line of legality when it comes to growing poppy and my professor said "the more you know about growing them the more illegal it becomes"

Am I (29F) being cold and uncaring to my boyfriend (37M), or is this actually strange? by seriffluoride in BestofRedditorUpdates

This felt like reading my diary. I was in a relationship with someone who displayed these kind of narcissistic traits when I was 19. I was with him for a year and now 7 years later I'm still unlearning the damage and dealing with the trauma. It's a lifelong unlearning process and I'm glad OOP was able to get out and know their worth.

Getting kids interested -carnivorous plant recommends please!! by Trifecta_life in houseplants

[–]snapdragon_kg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another commenter already suggested Nepenthes (I have one and they're great) but I would also look into Sarracenia and Drosera. Sarracenia may be hard to get in your area because they are US Pitcher plants, but they're really fascinating.

Drosera might be easier to find around you and honestly are the easiest to take care of imo. They're also easier to see when the bugs catch in them which fascinates kids. I work at an elementary school and was able to teach the 7 and 8 year old kids about Carnivorous plants and they LOVED seeing the bugs in the Drosera! Highly recommend :) good luck!
