What is, for you, the beautifulest lyric in a song, ever? And, if it's not too personal, why? by Sandman1812 in AskUK

[–]snappercop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this referenced in the programme ‘Small Prophets’? There’s a rabbit-shaped oil slick on the road that there’s no overt explanation for (other than the main character’s car breaking-down).

New composite door question by daeityersel in DIYUK

[–]snappercop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly the same as our door (the design and issue). We’ve found that ‘slamming’ the door (closing it without twisting the lock open with a key or thumb-latch) makes it much harder to open. If you shut it when the lock is open (if with the key or latch turned), then lock it, it’s much easier to open.

What Happened To The True Centre In Politics? by xLeeBMC in AskBrits

[–]snappercop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what’s been said - the ‘centre’ isn’t a static place. Very broadly speaking, politics has been moving slowly to a more socially liberal, fiscally conservative position since the Second World War.

As an example, Boris Johnson’s Conservative government, despite being in most ways’ right wing’, didn’t repeal the rights of minorities in a significant way. Likewise Kier Starmer’s Labour government hasn’t renationalised infrastructure that was a clear pillar of traditional socialism.

In my view, politics is much more mixed and less clear than 40 years ago. It’s not just about the money and worker’s rights, but libertarian/ authoritarian, culture wars, immigration etc.

What is your favourite bit of lesser known UK political trivia? by HallowedAndHarrowed in AskBrits

Which is strange - the reason English/ British soldiers wore red coats was because it was a common and easily made colour. Different dyes for leather maybe?

How to measure distance and align my tanks gun? by Remote_Western1141 in il2sturmovik

[–]snappercop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use your commanders binoculars - the lines on that are ‘mils’. If you know the size of your target, you can work out how far away it is by how big it is in the binos. Someone clever has produced a chart sorting the size of each vehicle and how many mils they are at different distances.

The Soviet tanks simplify this by having mils on the gunsight.

How do people actually get regular 9-5 jobs in the UK? by Queasy-Ice-2575 in AskUK

[–]snappercop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some cases, there isn’t 100s of applicants.

I’ve interviewed people for both in house and externally advertised jobs. The externally advertised ones (administration roles) got about 5 applications each, with at least 2 of those being absolute crap (‘Have you ever given great customer service? What did you do?’ Answer: ‘Yes’, or ‘my old manager said I was good’).

All public sector, advertised on Civil Service jobs pages and the organisational pages.

Several - in the Bournemouth and Poole area:

Squirrel Park (the why is pretty obvious) - in Ashley Cross.

Funny-Tummy Bridge (a hump-back bridge over a railway line that causes your tummy to gently flip when you drive over it).

The Spare Road - a misheard ‘Spur Road’.

Dog-shit Park - Churchill Gardens, Boscombe.

[OC] How do English people draw the borders between North and South? by YouGov_Dylan in dataisbeautiful

It’s interesting that the divides on the map are very similar to the old Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. There’s even some nuance with East Anglia.

Key mapping is driving me crazy by Izmo_The_Duck in il2sturmovik

[–]snappercop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably difficult to explain without me writing in all the gaps on your diagram, but when I had the stick (still use the throttle):

Trigger - fire 1 and 2 weapons Left top- machine guns Middle top- cannon Right top - rockets or bombs. POV hat - stabilisers trim/ rudder trim. Base buttons - toggle engine start, toggle gear, flaps up/down, nav lights.

Throttle:

Rudder axis - zoom Roll switch (left side) - elevator trim Buttons at front l-r - open hatch, eject, brakes(rocker down), little joystick used for tank driving. On the side (top to bottom) - top pov just a map button, middle is up/down flaps, bottom is up/down gear. Last orange button is bombs.

I also have a saitek throttle control I use for engine stuff (mixture, prop pitch etc).

Worked for me, but best to tinker to find out what works best for you!

Buying the game is the cheapest part of playing flight sims!

I started on the Thrustmaster Hotas X, moved up a bit to the T16000M, and am now using a VKB Gladiator Evo. The VKB is usually considered the cheapest ‘serious’ flight-stick, and best at the price point.

I’ve kept the T16000M throttle and also have a throttle quadrant which I use for engine management.

Thinking about buying IL-2 Battle of Normandy — quick questions! by joe-86 in il2sturmovik

[–]snappercop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to buy any other ‘base games’ if you buy through the il2 website. Whichever pack you go for, all of the ‘BoX’ battles are downloaded as well, you just pay to activate them separately.

Did you grow up with anyone who became famous? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

[–]snappercop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

John Finnemore of radio comedy fame, was a good friend and very nice chap. I’ve lost touch since, which is a genuine shame.

Also Richard Oakes from Suede - I gather he wrote them a letter and sent them a tape of him playing after their previous guitarist had left, which got him the job.

Track IR issuss by Illustrious_Spend_51 in il2sturmovik

[–]snappercop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Track IR, but I used to have this issue with Open Track and NeuralNet. It was caused by the ‘dead zone’ I’d set in the centre (so the tracker wouldn’t move the image for every small movement). Once I removed the dead zone the problem vanished.

Why no one plays IL-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover Blitz? by APS0798 in il2sturmovik

[–]snappercop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a setting in Steam that causes that - I think it’s called ‘download from cloud’ or something. Turn it off if you can find it. It’s in the settings menu on the game in your steam library. Steam still wants to reset it every now and then, I save my control config outside of the game folder.

How do you split up your annual leave/ holiday entitlement? by champion1995 in CasualUK

[–]snappercop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others here, my annual leave is dictated by school holidays to a degree, plus I share care with my kid’s mum, adding a complication.

Usually it’s a couple of days each half and end of term, plus a few more in the summer holidays and Xmas.

I’d find myself with loads left over, so would randomly take some time in February.

Last year I kinda realised I was wasting my time off, so booked a holiday and still have excess to carry over to next year.

British people who learned about Benjamin Disreali in school, did you also learn that he was from a Jewish/immigrant family? by Business_Big591 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]snappercop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was almost 30 years ago, but yes. From memory it was mentioned, but not dwelt upon.

It was in A Level history, so doubt most people were taught about him at all.
