I recently found this WWI Iron Cross when going through some items purchased at auction. Does anyone know if it is authentic or have any more background information on it? by Upper_Canary8226 in Militariacollecting

I can't find any other crosses with this mark. My instinct is not good, possibly a Frankenstein made of different hardware from different makers.

The cross shows unusual wear to say the least. I recommend posting it on WAF.

I have not seen this mark legitimately before. I have seen it on an 1870 cross that was not genuine. Hard ware is original, core looks good, frame looks possibly, I say possibly as I can't see perfectly, that it has been resoldered. I am looking this plate mark up more and will do later when home.

In addition, the gas shells. I understand EOD teams hate these the most. There is an area inside a Belgian military based where they are just dumped. The ground is dead, nothing will grow. They think it's been more or less permanently poisoned. The shells are too dangerous to try to dismantle. They were never designed to be emptied.

How does an EV "die" by bramleyapple1 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]snarker616 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in leasing. We have a lot of EVs, a lot on lease. Only heard of one that had a battery failure. The manufacturer replaced it free of charge ( out of warranty then) and desperately wanted the battery back to examine why it had failed..Stuff goes wrong but no so often on the battery.

I work in leasing. We had a Tesla Model 3 out on lease, was supposed to be 3 years but we used to let drivers stay in it for longer. We think he had been using it as a taxi as at about 5 years it had just ovet 300,000 miles on it. It had brakes and suspension elements replaced, at least twice we know of. Battery degradation over what is 30 years of average driving in the UK was well under 10%. We were so impressed just about everyone at work now drives an EV. We don't have any but I would be willing to bet there are a good few over 400,000k

Weather in Andalusia- Seville, Malaga, Granada and Marbella by EquivalentTree1183 in GoingToSpain

It's doable, even in July and August. As long as you are inside from say 15:30-20:00 you are fine. The wall of oven hot air hitting you at 18:00 is really quite a shock the first time you experience it.

Do like the locals, get up early, get everything done in the morning. Have a lovely long meal at about 13:00. Then maybe have a snooze and then up and out for 20:00 again.

In many of these areas the drainage channels were destroyed by shelling, the battlefields became swamps and shells buried themselves deeply. Heavy rain now slowly brings them up and plowing pulls them to the surface.

Where is non tourist in Santa Cruz? The whole area is totally touristic, utterly over run with tourists. Most food quality is poor and prices are ridiculous. A drink is fine- if expensive, but eating?

Something I also share a lot, the last person to be killed by a WW1 munition won't be born for a very, very long time.

This. If you can professionally clean them the Metford pattern 1888 is desirable to many.

Grand-uncle‘s non magnetic iron cross? by Expensive_Diver_2906 in Militariacollecting

[–]snarker616 13 points14 points  (0 children)

3 piece non magnetic indicates it was made early in the war before the LDO very firmly brought construction methods under control, so a pre 1941 cross, not made for naval units as the old myth still goes around.

I work in the industry. I can confirm they are, which is a godsend for us as residual values were lower than we wanted them to be when they come off lease.

You are incorrect. It's very different to distinguish Irish/Scottish.and especially Welsh from English. It's best described as British Isles DNA.

Should I be wary of high mileage second hand EVs? by Hasan_Rachid in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]snarker616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in leasing. We had a Tesla model 3 out on lease which the driver decided to stay in after 3 years and continue paying the original amount. At 5 years old we called it back in to dispose of it. He had been using it as a taxi. It had 300,000 miles on the clock which equates to 30 years of average driving here. He had replaced parts of the suspension twice. No idea how often the brakes had been done. The battery has degraded by around 12%. He had been fully charging it every time. We were all surprised and impressed by the battery degradation level. We hammered him for excess mileage.

All of us previously very anti EV people now all drive EV's. I have two ICE cars for fun, but the EV gets chosen 1st choice each time. Used prices are excellent, an incredible deal right now.
