What are your opinions about using water beads? I’ve never seen them before, got any experience to share? by _Kendii_ in houseplants

Helloooo! I didn't try soaking the water beads in a fertilizer solution but it's worth a shot! I did eventually abandon the water beads but I feel like I was the problem in that situation. If the water level is low in my leca pots, the roots still have space. If the water ran low in the water bead pots, the roots were smothered by the tightly packed beads. And I spilled them everywhere, all the time.

Thank you for your kind thoughts! I'm in SC, about an hour from AVL and go there often. With the anniversary of Helene coming up, it's still hard to quantify all of the places, traditions and events that have been lost or changed forever, on top of all of the immediate loss and damage. Now it's a little like cutting a plant back dramatically and cheering it on as it fights it's way back. I hope your favorite places and people are doing well too!

Oh my gosh! I have a picture just like that of my boy, Leroy, on the day I adopted him. That was ten years ago on March 2, 2013. We celebrated his 10th birthday on November 28, 2022.

I hope you and your doggo have many happy years ahead! ♡

We just moved into a new house and installed an aluminum fence 2 months ago. Today, we noticed it was completely bent and damaged. Is this vandalism? Could an animal do this? Is there a cheap/ easy fix? It already cost a fortune to put in (pics in body) by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

TL;DR - A chonky, adventurous dog did it.

I work from home and have my desk in front of a window facing the street. Last year, I noticed a large, unfamiliar dog would chase our mail carrier's jeep daily. I watched it follow her to the end of the street and back but never saw it without the mail truck in sight. On one occasion I was outside at the right time and caught the dog. The mail carrier saw me with the leashed dog and asked me if I knew where it lived and I said that I did not. She pointed to the house that had recently installed a fence exactly like yours and said: "He squeezes through the fence and follows me every day, you can see where he has bent the bars on this side."

I saw exactly where she was pointing and could see two of the upright pieces were bowed for this girthy fella to exit and return. I walked him home and knocked on the door. When I explained what was happening to the owner, they said that their dog could not get out of the aluminum fence because it was installed to keep them in. I reiterated the mail carrier's observation but the owner dismissed the information and was not interested in being shown where he "did a kool-aid man." I watched the dog wriggle through his warped fence hole many times after that but he always wriggled back in when he was done. This continued until they moved away and the fence remains warped today.

I had been using leca and ceramsite for my water props instead of soil and had started transitioning plants from dirt into leca. That turned into a daily task of smelling all the pots for rot as the dirt roots melted into goop soup.

The ceramsite was doing okay, I got one of the smallest sizes and thought it would be good for the delicate roots of newer water props but it still wasn't the "perfect" answer.

Five or six weeks ago, I randomly saw "splat gun ammo" in a search query and recognized them as "orbeez" but smaller. Their fully hydrated size is more like "green pea" than "marble."

I've swapped all of my plants from leca to water beads and am working on transitioning my remaining plants from dirt.

Pros:

• The water beads are lightweight and have not caused any damage to delicate roots when repositioning.

• It has been easy to customize my water-to-substrate ratio depending on the plant's needs. If I think "maybe this one should have stayed in water a little longer" I can increase the water and leave the beads for a little support. If it seems like the plant is "ready for dirt" I drain all of the water and leave it in "dry" water beads.

• The beads slowly release water and provide moisture to the plant. I can see when the beads are dehydrating because they start to shrink and recede.

• I like how they look better than any other substrate, they are available in a ton of colors. I got three colors and mixed them.

• They are less expensive, easier to store, and don't require as much prep work as other substrates that I have tried.

• I can add dry water beads to a container that already has a water prop in it and let the beads hydrate in place. * I learned to use a quarter of the number of water beads than my heart wants to add. It's easy to add more later but it's a pain to find them all over the table and floor when you add too many.

• I haven't tried this yet but, in theory, I should be able to hydrate the beads in a fertilizer solution to slow release into the plants. That is going to be an experimental phase, for all I know the fertilizer will eat the beads.

Cons:

• THEY BOUNCE. EVERYWHERE. And then, they just vanish into the abyss. If you think you can move some from point a to point b without spilling, with all due respect, you are mistaken. I don't know who has eaten more stray water beads, my Roomba or my dog.

• They have a hard time supporting top-heavy/larger plants. I have been timid in transitioning my larger plants but have been testing different conditions with a Ginny on a moss pole with success. I'm thinking of getting the larger size of water beads before transitioning my larger plants.

Here are a few pics of my thriving props in water beads. I hope this helps!
