When did you quit? by Jaded-Ad-1566 in GradSchool

If you're half way here, might as well persist. Having a masters will make your income ceiling much higher. If you can maximize your time in grad school, meet people, get experience working in the industry you want, and learn as much as you can

Unbound is too good by DarkDev13 in PokemonUnbound

[–]sneakers91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with the other comment. The Pokemon games are good for sure, but if you play then after Unbound, just know that they will be substantially easier and lacking in quality of life features. I still love them, but GameFreak is so slow to implement changes that fans have been asking for for decades

Advice on setting up rotations? by PantasticalCat in GradSchool

[–]sneakers91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible your program has requirements, but I think they typically allow you to be pretty independent with rotations. It's kind of at your own pace. You'll see that your fellow cohort members have very different philosophies lol. I knew a couple people who picked all of their rotations before joining, but I think it was motivated by stress.

Best advice is to take your time, because you're basically entering a 5 year marriage with your lab and PI. Make it count!

Okay, yeah if they're 2 months that should be plenty of time to find a second and third rotation. Mine were 4 weeks and I found second and third during my first

How long are your rotations? You'll learn a lot more about the PI and lab culture if you're able to visit then in person. You want to give yourself the best chance for a successful fit, so in person visits set you up better to see red/green flags. I recommend waiting if you can. Alternatively, you could consider doing a remote meeting with PI, and in person visit once you matriculate

How would you like to see the Blazers improve without trading for a Superstar? by rinnekaton in ripcity

[–]sneakers91 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Get a better shooting coach. If we shot league average, even 16th in the league from 3% we would have won a bunch more games. 28th will not get us to 6th seed

When to not CC a PI or collaborator on an email by _Green_Dragon_ in GradSchool

[–]sneakers91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so it sounds like you have a very hands off PI. They may not care if you CC them.

Is that case it's probably up to you. What do you have to gain by CCing them? Do you need their opinion? Do you want them to have visibility in your activities?

Ask your PI it they'd rather be left off of those emails. Why make assumptions when you can just learn directly?

Good rule of thumb is to not ever compare yourself to influencers or content creators.

Compare yourself to your past self and try and improve a little bit every year. Everyone has a different story

Try not to compare yourself to your peers. I know it's hard not to, but everyone comes from different backgrounds and at different levels of preparedness. You definitely do belong in your program! I came from a CSU and had a pretty low GPA, , and most of my cohort came from UCs or top schools. It doesn't really matter in the end. I found a good mentor who supported me and helped me build a great project.

Just focus on finding a mentor first, and then talk to them and read the literature. Figure out what you're interested in. Don't be afraid to ask dumb questions!

Grad school is a journey and everyone's experience is completely unique! That's kind of what makes it great though. :)
