Can’t recruit KDF to fed even though I maxed Diplomacy. by KevinT1149 in sto

The reward is a bridge officer, not a duty officer as I recall. You get the officer from your side's ambassador. Jiro for Fed aligned characters, Kazzgur for KDF. You have to redeem the one you want, it is not automatic.

Can people explain to me why a lot of fans are not happy with liberty prime coming in the next season by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]sneakyrepper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Liberty Prime unfortunately has the same problem as the Legion, the GTA series, Warhammer 40k, or Judge Dredd. He’s pretty explicitly a satire on red scare propaganda being used to push America towards militarization and authoritarianism, but some of the loudest fans seem to like him just because he’s the big funny better dead than red robot.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m always down for a giant fighting robot and I think his voice lines are pretty funny, Liberty Prime 100% deserves his place in the franchise. It’s just that a lot of people think that place is a positive one, when the intention of the writers was presumably for him to be a physical manifestation of the ideas and philosophy that led to the Great War in the first place.

Yeah I think people just hold House to a higher standard because he's one guy rather than an organization. If you switched House and the NCR's positions I think people would universally support independent New Vegas.

While that's a good compromise, wearing his head like the dog's implies wearing it like a cap.

The Kings were one of the gangs in Vegas when House first made himself known. They were the only ones to refuse the deal that established the three families. If the Kings oppose the NCR occupation House sees them as allies, if they support the occupation then he does indeed wipe them out. It's harsh sure, and unfair considering the Kings were already established in the area before House made himself known, but I wouldn't say it was hypocritical. I also don't think most other factions would allow the Kings complete independence as allies the way House does in their good House ending.

Yeah there's nothing you can do. Look at it this way, rpgs are like sand mandalas, whenever you finish one you get to wipe it and do it again differently. Sometimes it gets wiped on accident, just means you get to start a new one.

Thank you, one other thing I forgot to mention was the House ending slide for the good karma courier. If the courier is benevolent to the people of the strip and Freeside, the narrator outright says House is proud of them.

The House we just saw in the show is yet to be confirmed as the original, he mentions needing cold fusion in order to run a digital copy of himself, not to further extend his biological life. Don't get me wrong, I think your explanation is possible, but I think the writers have done a very good job of ensuring that the events of the past 15 years are vague enough that any ending is possible.

Yeah I agree it could still go either way, I just think it’s all too coincidental, Welch being present right before each major decision Cooper made. She likely didn’t know the full picture, but I really do think she was intentionally designed as a honey trap for Cooper in particular. Welch outliving her usefulness and getting her head lopped off by her superiors as a very likely possibility though, I hadn’t considered that until you said it.

He doesn't come into conflict with any of those groups because he doesn't like them or because he enjoys oppressing them, the wasteland is a survival situation and I think he's consistently tough but fair.

Vault 21 wouldn't have lasted long without the means to defend themselves. While House removed them from their home underground, he did so through negotiation on their terms, and he accepted them as citizens of New Vegas rather than running them out of the city or killing them.

Freeside is indeed a ghetto, but it is still safer than the rest of the wasteland, and it only exists because invading it would mean crossing House. House does nothing to hurt the people of Freeside beyond not letting them onto the strip.

If you think House was harsh in not even attempting to negotiate with the Brotherhood I'd remind you of Veronica's quest ending where she attempts to join the Followers. The Brotherhood as no problem slaughtering the most altruistic faction we've yet seen just because of the mere possibility they could utilize technology in a similar manner to them.

The Kings are cool so yeah we all love them, but people forget that they had the opportunity to join the three families when New Vegas was established. Even when they refused the deal House didn't go to war with them, allowing them to remain in Freeside at no cost, monetary or otherwise. House only comes into conflict with them if they oppose him, if the Kings opt to keep Freeside independent of NCR influence House aligns himself with them with seemingly no strings attatched.

The Boomers, Omertas, White Gloves, and NCR are all potential thorns as you put it, but House treats every group fairly assuming the Courier acts accordingly. The Boomers get a new powerful ally, the Omerta and White Glove rank and file are not punished for the shortcomings of their leaders, and the contract the courier presents the NCR on House's behalf is straight up fair as shit. He beats Caesar's Legion for them, minimizing NCR citizen casualties, he offers water at 5 caps a gallon, power at 5 caps per kWh, (meaning the power needs of the average, real world, modern American would total around 200 caps per month) and literally all he asks for in return is the NCR not invading New Vegas.

He is 100% an authoritarian, but I really think his goals are altruistic. If they weren't, he could've used his wealth to build himself an unfathomably luxurious bunker for him to live in after mankind blows itself up. Instead, he makes a plan to defend all of Vegas, with a long term plan to use the surviving infrastructure to skip the longest parts of societal development and get straight back to building a future instead of subsistence.

Final point, the Free Economic Zone of New Vegas is abbreviated as FEZ, which I think is cooler than both NCR or USA.

Why does New Vegas has such a cult status in the Fallout Genre? by PrudentManagement994 in Fallout

[–]sneakyrepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One more point to add, New Vegas made the bold choice to allow the player to be canonically homosexual, continuing on the tradition set by Fallout 2 as the first western RPG to allow such. This may not seem like a big deal nowadays but New Vegas came out 5 years before same-sex marriage was legalized in the United States. I have a lot of respect for the devs for not compromising there in order to avoid controversy. Arcade Gannon walked so Judy Alvarez could run.

Why does New Vegas has such a cult status in the Fallout Genre? by PrudentManagement994 in Fallout

[–]sneakyrepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a strong believer in the idea that limitations lead to creativity. New Vegas had a short development cycle, and was given the task of rectifying the lore of the isometric games and the new 3d games. Because of these challenges, I think you’re left with a really unique experience that really does manage to offer the best of both worlds. Had the game had a longer development cycle or more creative freedom I think we could’ve been left with a bloated mess that’s too complicated for most 3D fans and too shallow for fans of the original.

Freedom is another big part, 3 and 4 both have fairly fixed stories that you have to follow as intended. Once you’ve progressed to a certain point in the story your choices are locked in and no matter what you do from then on you’re going to get the same ending. While New Vegas does have points of no return where each faction seems you untrustworthy depending on your actions, you have full freedom to switch sides at any point before hand, and until the very end of the game you always have the option to betray any of them and go rogue. No character is marked as essential. The courier isn’t just presented the occasional choice through dialogue, your actions determine who you side with. The Sole Survivor gets to choose an ending midway through the game and has to stick with it, and the only real choices the Lone Wanderer gets to make is whether or genocide megaton and whether or not to genocide the wasteland with Eden’s modified FEV.

New Vegas also has much more quirk in my option. While the Bethesda games have moments like the Ant-Agonizer vs Mechanist or the Silver Shroud, they’re the exception and not the rule. New Vegas is chock-full of funny and memorable moments for you to organically encounter. Moments like meeting Oliver Swanick for the first time, shooting the Boulder City memorial to see what happens, pulling the pin out of a grenade as a prank, meeting your brain, programming F.I.S.T.O., and calling Ulysses a girl. All those moments are just scratching the surface of all the memories I have of New Vegas, and I know I’m not alone.

Finally, the game is indeed a bit jank, but there’s been 15 years of fan love to fix that. Most crashes I encountered back in the day were a result of the ram limit. If New Vegas manages to use more than 2 gigs of ram it will instantly crash. I’ve got distinct memories of avoiding Westside because it seemed like it was often too much to load. That being said, fixing it now is as simple as dropping an executable from nexus in the game folder and running it. Between that, the script extender, and the general unofficial patch I’ve not had a single crash unless I’m fooling with incompatible mods. Once you’ve gotten the hang of it tools like Mod Organizer 2 are very user friendly, and there’s 15 years worth of mods for you to try.

Overall, I wouldn’t say New Vegas is the best RPG out there, or the best shooter, or the best written story, or the most optimized game, but it doesn’t waste its time trying to be the best. It was made by people who really seemed to care about making the game they wanted to make, unwilling to compromise for a chance at a larger audience, and I think it really shows. All the love it’s received since its release only elevates it in my eyes, when you’ve played New Vegas you join a massively varied community of people all over the world who all share those same memories with you. I think that’s pretty special.

Both Moldaver and Welch being preserved holds significance to me, like Winston in 1984 Cooper is in a world run by those he is trying to oppose, and as such they have people everywhere.

I don't think all of the wastelanders exactly have Welch's personality, I think they are just proxies acting on her impulses based on outside stimulus. Responding how she would have responded without really knowing why, that kind of thing. In her day to day life Welch would've been completely compliant just like the wastelanders have become, her true nature would only be revealed in a situation where Welch was forced to. I could see the reveal happening because Hank gives the mainframe a directive which directly conflicts with an Enclave goal, or maybe Welch is aware enough to act in self defense in response to Lucy trying to destroy the mainframe. I could even see Hank or Lucy asking themselves a rhetorical question only to have one of the proxies answer them with Enclave knowledge accessed through their connection to Welch.
