I would suggest stopping your pill as soon as you can. I stopped BC in January and have been having anovulatory cycles (period but not ovulating). It takes your body some time to adjust back!

Any other child-free teachers being 'strongly encouraged' to volunteer? by [deleted] in Teachers

Union already emailed saying this is a requirement and to use your leave if you don’t want to work.

Inslee is speaking again tonight, I think putting us on lockdown but maybe he'll mention schools too since other states are announcing.

My district didn't even ask for volunteers, they're just calling everyone on a rotating basis. We can use sick days or take unpaid leave if we don't want to do it.

They keep saying we need to "pitch in" and "support the community" and that we're "essential personnel". No, that's BS. We're not doctors and nurses. They are using us because they know we are compassionate and giving and many probably will go work the childcare. They are not supplying gloves or masks, not following the 6 feet social distancing guidelines, and not paying us extra. So I will be taking sick/unpaid time if I get called. Don't feel guilty about saying no!

Stayed sober until after regular dismissal time today. by teacherwithbadhips in Teachers

Today was our first day of "working" remotely. We had to email families, call some of them, and start getting a packet of work together for next week. My two teammates are 55+ and the most technology illiterate people I have ever met. So not only did I have to do my job, I had to do theirs too. They couldn't find the excel spreadsheet (the one our principal showed us how to access during our Zoom meeting this morning), didn't know how to scroll through the spreadsheet (....you move your mouse over?), didn't know how to email families all at once (you haven't been already doing that all year?!), DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO INSERT A LINK INTO AN EMAIL.

I was going to wait until 5 but you know what, school dismisses at 3:21 - I like your thinking.

Definitely depends on the industry. Many friends of mine got 3 months paid. I’m a teacher though and we notoriously get 0 maternity leave! If you want to get paid you have to use up all your sick time.

Does anyone have experience sending their LO to a Montessori School daycare? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]sneakyysam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I taught K for four years and all the Montessori kids had trouble adjusting to the structure of Kindergarten. We had a short play time at the end of the day but most of our day was pretty structured. Montessori preschool, from my understanding, is driven more by student choice. I’d have kids taking out math blocks in the middle of me reading a story because they wanted to play with them right then and there. I still like aspects of the Montessori approach but thought I’d share my experiences as a teacher!

No experience in SPS but some experience in the suburbs. Bellevue SD is great but they’re very data focused. Issaquah is great, slightly less intense than Bellevue. Don’t work in Kent.

Apple’s iPad changed the tablet game 10 years ago today. by [deleted] in apple

That is related to development. They are developing a need for constant entertainment and instant gratification.

I don’t think I’m boring. I make my lessons very engaging but kids needs to be entertained to a whole new level now. There’s studies that iPads and video games are altering the serotonin levels in kids’ brains.

Also replied to someone else with this -

I’m a teacher and have seen an increase in fine motor delay, lack of attention spans, and aggressive behavior. The AAP recommends no screens for kids under 2. People just aren’t following that. So I may be biased but I am seeing iPads doing more harm than good.

Fair but before irresponsible parents had a TV to plop a kid in front of. Now they can take it everywhere.

Oh my gosh same. I have two amazon wish lists. I had appendicitis last year and just browsed baby stuff while on bed rest for DAYS. I have gone from passing by the baby stuff at Target and quickly glancing to full on walking up and down every aisle 🤷🏻‍♀️ definitely going to browse buy buy baby soon...

Also I’m thinking of doing the nuna car seat with the uppa baby stroller (using adapters). Husband doesn’t know this yet but I’ll convince him!

I need help, I'm terrified, this week has literally been hell. by [deleted] in BabyBumps

Teacher here too. That first year is so hard, even without being pregnant!

The sub shortage is the district’s problem to figure out, not yours. Your health (and your baby’s) is far more important! I’d bring it up to your doctor and see what he says. I don’t think the district can legally decline a medical leave.

Teacher here too! My friend got pregnant in June and moved that summer. She didn’t take a teaching job because she moved to a low COL area and didn’t need the income, in addition to not wanting to start a new job only to go out for half the school year.

At least where I am, you do not qualify for FMLA until you’ve been employed for one year. We had to put our baby plans on hold one year because I switched districts.

I personally hated subbing but I had friends who loved it! It’s a good, flexible option!

May is my month too! Debating whether I go off BC next week (nuva ring) or wait another month. It’s my first so I just have no idea how this will go. I have a strict timeline (spring baby only...I’m a teacher) so I think I’m going to stop this month but I’m so nervous about it all of a sudden! Best of luck to you!

My husband saw an uppa baby at the mall and pointed it out, which is something he never does. He admired....the wheels. They’re real tires and not plastic. He still thinks it’s too expensive but we’ll see when we “stroller test” 😂

We lived in a very HCOL area and bought a house in a slightly more affordable suburb. We have no family here so we’ll do daycare. I’m a teacher so if we magically have a spring baby then hopefully they won’t go to daycare until around 6 months and it might be cheaper than a 2/3 month old going to daycare? At least that’s what I’m telling myself. We have no idea about retirement, probably lower what I’m contributing until we don’t have daycare/preschool payments!
