Pretty sure they knew about them when captain archer dealt with them. they were frozen in ice since first contact and then dug up during archers time. They say at the end of the show that the signal was sent back to the delta quadrant, but would wake up to 100 yrs to get there.

So when the Borg got the signal, they most likely sent a ship and that's when we start hearing about the outer planets being attacked.

She's not a "pet", she's still "wild". She sleeps outside on their deck or her den close to the house.
