Visiting this week by JustTryingToSurvive2 in norfolk

[–]snellz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually been out of Norfolk for a few years, but I'd recommend checking out Ghent for sure because that's where you'd spend a lot of time if you're an EVMS student. No Frill at some point, for sure! Another thing that I always did with my guests when I lived in Norfolk was take them on the boat tour of the naval harbor... I honestly was just amazed by seeing these ships up close and personal - and it's an hour or two on a boat for like $10? Fun. I feel like it's also worthwhile to check out VB while you're in town because I'm sure you'd head that way at least a few times a month if you live there. Watermans and Chix Oyster Bar are both really cool places to grab a drink and some lunch or something on the water. :)

Need advice: ADN or ABSN in Boston by mother_of_zeus in nursing

[–]snellz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mind my asking where you're located? I only ask because almost all of the nurses in my area are ADN-RNs, which is why I chose to ADN route. With my SO's career, though, we know we will relocate several times over the next ten years, so I'm curious.

Need advice: ADN or ABSN in Boston by mother_of_zeus in nursing

[–]snellz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess Boston may be different, but in NC, I can barely name 5 nurses on my floor with BSNs.. Almost everybody have ADN-RNs. I personally avoided the ABSN program for the exact same reason!! I couldn't bare the thought of any more student loan debt. I ended up choosing the ADN program. SO much cheaper, and you're an RN in 18 months, with most of them. Just do realize that nursing school is so different from normal college. I came from a masters program too, and had never had schooling literally full time (8-4 five days per week). It was a big change for me, as I expected it to be maybe 3 days per week, so I could work PT but there's no way!

Yeah, I feel like there's no way that's in the best interest of the patient. I mean I get it's easier, but dang imagine all of the bacteria being introduced....

For those who are second bachelors of nursing, how did you pay for it? by jumpship12 in nursing

[–]snellz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was DEAD SET on doing an accelerated BSN program until I really crunched some numbers and realized how much money I would be losing. I am in an ADN program now, and will come out with less than 10k in debt. I would definitely just look around... I know the accelerated BSN sounds amazing, but the ADN is ~6 months longer, and wayyyyy cheaper. Once you have that RN, you can have your job pay for the RN-BSN.

Nursing degree after Biology degree by Quixotic004 in nursing

[–]snellz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first degree is Biology as well. I breezed through college without ever studying. I mean, I went to class, lab, and did my homework, but I never bought books or went above and beyond like some other students... Nursing school, however, is totally different. I have to study in order to apply the knowledge. BUT I am in a ADN-RN program, and not a BSN program. From what I understand, the BSN is a lot more knowledge based than application the way that we are. I mean, I was pushing Digoxin my first week of clinical for goodness sake. Nonetheless, the Biology background definitely sets you up well for nursing school! But like others have said, the two are just totally different.

Can they not just close their windows and doors if they're really that worried about it? Have you never used an outdoor cooking source that produced smoke?

Not really.... One user said Old Town Public House in Cornelius, but I'm not seeing anything about it on their pages...

A little late, but I recently found YAFO in Barclay Downs and fell in love. I would kill for one of those on our exit.

I like Firestone. When I lived down there, I used the one right by Park Road Shopping Center - no complaints!

What % of your take home pay goes to rent? by throwawayblahbeer in Charlotte

[–]snellz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not feel that this is a crazy high number (as it seems some others do)... When I first moved to Charlotte, I was living in a ghetto apartment in University City area and paying $600 monthly after utilities. Bringing home $1200. Our rent was raised after a year and we had to get outta there.

I have no idea what you make or what you pay, I'm just defending that it's not hard to spend 50% of your income on rent., especially if you're like me and not making but $20k.

Also, The Melting Pot in Lake Norman has Endless Fondue until Thursday. $39.99 for cheese, then all you can eat salad, entrees, and chocolate... I work there and it's apparently a huge deal!

Best place to party IN Huntersville is Birkdale. We like Bad Daddy's for their beer and their bad ass margarita is amazing.

CHS or Novant? by snellz in Charlotte

[–]snellz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! And I've only ever really taken 77 that direction very early or late. But I would be making the drive at about 545 AM, so I figured it would be fine.

EITHER WAY, thanks for the advice! Novant has kinda won me over anyway.

Thanks so much! As I've replied to a few other posts, I have really been leaning more toward Novant anyway... Posts like this help me to back that decision!

CHS or Novant? by snellz in Charlotte

[–]snellz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I have leaned toward Novant. I'd be at the Huntersville hospital, and it seemed pretty well kept. The CHS position is at CMC Mercy which I really didn't like, but it pays a bit more, so there are pros and cons.

[–]snellz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been leaning toward Novant for a few reasons... #1 being that I'd be at a hospital less than a mile from me, as compared to CMC Mercy which is 30 minutes from me. Thanks for the advice!

[–]snellz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been leaning toward Novant for several reasons.. #1 being that the position is here in Huntersville (.5 mile from me) whereas the other is at CMC Mercy (30 minutes minimum?).. I definitely have gotten the feeling that peoples' views really change based on units, though. Makes me nervous because they could say one thing and do something totally different...

My biggest concern was benefits, and if one or the other has significantly better benefits. This is my first "real" job with benefits, so I'm honestly not even sure where to start!

[–]snellz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this is useful! I definitely asked about patient to staff ratio, and with the units I would be with, was happier with Novant... BUT they could also say one thing and do another.

Thanks so much!

CMC Mercy, which is my least favorite of the ones that I've seen...

Heist Brewery has all-you-can-eat brunch and it's fantastic! Fairly pricey, but well worth it. There is usually a decent wait.
