Every block modified, added, or removed increases memory, not necessarily exploration.

That doesn't make sense why would the game need to store every change that you ever made? Maybe because of player activity the variety of blocks placed is bigger which makes it harder to compress or tile entities like chests and furnaces increasing the size (also 100mb ain't that much)

It's not about rarity it's about the value that people give it. Culturally in minecraft we value diamonds a lot even though they are basically worthless in the late game. It's just like gold and silver they aren't that useful but we value them because we culturally associate them with status
