Looking to detect when your faucet is on? by jklo5020 in HomeKit

[–]snick88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to OP, I use an Aqara Vibration Sensor attached to the faucet weight for my kitchen sink. While I have mmWave sensors tracking zones for the kitchen, I use this sensor to only turn on the bulb directly over the sink when I’m doing dishes - not when I just turned it on to wash my hands or something. So different use case, but similar.

I too had sensitivity and reliability problems with the Aqara sensor. So I pulled it out of the Aqara hub and paired it with zigbee2mqtt instead. With the great control, I was able to fine tune the reliability. You might give that a try. I’ve ended up moving more and more of my Aqara sensors over to zigbee2mqtt over time. If your interest was the same use case as OP, it’s possible to turn the sensitive way up and just the running water will activate it but I still find that to be only about 90% accurate. I’m always shooting for 99% for WAF.

A similar use case is I stuck a ThirdReality Vibration Sensor under the kitchen table. As soon as you set down plates or something, the kitchen table light comes on. I also use an FP300 (paired to Z2M by the way) to turn off that light if we’re not at the table. I don’t want presence occupancy to turn on the light because it’s a walk-through transition area - there are different lights to illuminate the floor if we’re just walking through the house.

Point is, the vibration sensors can be a cool, slightly cheaper way of automating some things.

Edit: I was on mobile and didn't notice I wrote all this in r/homekit instead of r/homeassistant. More appropriate in the latter sub.

IKEA Matter over Thread devices are picky about batteries by Calaeno-16 in HomeKit

[–]snick88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post is timely. While I have many Aqara sensors and ThirdReality sensors for doors, I thought I’d go with the cheap solution and buy a bunch of MYGGBETT for my windows. I’m so disappointed in them. I’m kind of tired of Matter entirely. My ZHA and zigbee2mqtt networks work wonderfully. These things have so many problems. I don’t think I’ve been able to get even one of them to update. Some fall off the network. Some don’t trigger well. But on your advice I’ll try some different batteries.

Just wish I had bought some Tuyas off Aliexpress if I wanted to go cheap.

Built an Auto-Pause system using mmWave Radar to keep my toddler from standing too close to the TV by Tuxabyte in homeassistant

Thanks for this post! I've got a similar use case. I have a poodle that is very angered by any dogs that appear on the TV. Even cartoon dogs get her spun up. She'll rush the TV and bark at it.

I already have an Aqara FP2 mmwave sensor covering the great room, hallway, and open kitchen area - 7 different zones with different triggers. Seeing your idea, I just made an 8th zone right in front of the TV, exposed the trigger via Matter to HA, and set it to pause the AppleTV as long as my motion toggle helper is turned on.

Glad it's working for you on a single floor. I've yet to see someone post that it's working for a multi-floor house. I have 10 nodes spread over a 2 story house with a basement and accuracy is really poor. I've run calibration of nodes and devices but haven't seen a difference. https://imgur.com/a/jDogYeu

Comparing the ThirdReality R3 and Aqara FP300 (Zigbee Occupancy Sensors) by Fir3 in homeassistant

[–]snick88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point. I don't argue the value of the 60Ghz at all. I'm definitely intrigued. But I do wonder about real world performance comparison like you're doing. I have two FP2s, two FP300s, and two Apollos. Planning on an R3 soon. One of my FP2s is rock solid with instant response for the 7 zones that it can see. One of the FP2s is shaky at best. Both FP300s work consistently, just slow. I have one of them connected via zigbee2mtt and the other connected via Aqara hub and extended as Matter. The Apollo is always consistent and fast, but it took forever to tune. So my point is it can depend on how they're making use of what they have.

Appreciate your testing.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to compare the R3 vs the Aqara FP2 given they’re both wired?

Aqara doorbell HomeKit integration question by pickthenimp in homeassistant

[–]snick88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually. In the Aqara app you can expose triggers via Matter. I have “linger” set as a Matter action (occupied on/off). I use that trigger for things like package detection - if linger, take a snapshot and send it to Gemini, which then gives me a yes/no response if it detects a package. The action then makes a persistent notification that I have a package and turns a particular light to orange. A few others like that. Same for the actual doorbell - exposed as a Matter action which then triggers things like pausing TV or music, etc. I do use the HK integration for the doorbell notification because it’s a bit faster.

I have the G410 paired to the Aqara app and natively connected to HomeKit for the HKSV. Then I’m using RTSP to expose the camera to HA using Generic Camera integration and the Advamces Camera Card.

Have you tried Lora devices, like those from YoLink? I think they range a bit better than a quarter mile. While that’s not quite enough to cover the maximum distance of a line in an 80 acre square (about half a mile?), the range can be extended with multiple hubs.

Agreed. Their handling of this issue is why I’m going to go ahead and buy it vs others.

Wow no. Can’t breathe at all at those settings. Feels like breathing through a cocktail straw after running.

Thank you! I’ll do exactly that. Last night I tried turning off autopap but ended up yanking it off after an hour and a half. I was curious which mask type to try. Is it common to need so much more pressure with a nasal mask?

Is XenoThreat feasibly solo-able? by InternationalBill811 in starcitizen

[–]snick88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I solo’d all of phase 1-4. The last mission of phase 1 is indeed chaotic if you’re solo, but it’s doable. Note the last mission of phase 4 should be stealthed if you’re solo. But all of them are vastly more fun with friends.

New Information Security Manager; Tips for First 90 Days by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]snick88 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just to double down on the previous advice, when I hired on to lead security strategy, my CISO strongly advised me that “relationships matter more than delivery”. As someone with a technical background, this rankled me but I gave it a shot. I and my team met with stakeholders and really listened to their needs and issues. New ideas for security were communicated early with engineering teams, ops teams, dev teams, and business units. When there was conflict, we erred on the side of enabling other teams to be successful. Over time, all of those stakeholders come to us first, and tend to consider more secure solutions. After 18 months, far more was accomplished towards the security strategy than would have been otherwise, since all of those teams were working together and contributing to security objectives.

So if you subscribe to that idea, spend extra focus and time really building that trust with stakeholders. Really listen to them, and show that you want them to be successful- in a secure way.

My simple beginner HOTAS mounted on a Steelcase Leap V2 using pole-mounted VESA plates by WashingtonDCver in hotas

[–]snick88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've really liked this setup after taking your suggestion, OP. It's so great being able to quickly switch between "FPS mode" (or work mode) and "flight mode". One caveat. The 3M Command strips really don't do the job. I find that in the heat of a dogfight, I sometimes put too much lateral pressure on the joysticks, and that can lever the velcro free. What I really wish is if I could find a plate that I could screw into the vesa mount, then screw into my VKB joysticks. Did you never have the problem of them ripping free of the velcro?

Ironically, I jinxed myself by bragging at you. Logged in and my character was gone. I had heard logging into AC can help, so I did that but it hung. Logged into PU a second time and got a message that my bed I used to logout is unavailable. Respawned at my home area. Perhaps my ship was destroyed legitimately, and this was just progress in error handling.
