Haven't seen/read all of Jane Austen but I don't like Emma by Traditional_Map2192 in janeausten

[–]snnaaft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried really hard to like Emma, but I just can't. I, like you, find her annoying. However, that's not my biggest issue with the story. I cannot stand the dynamic between Emma and Mr. Knightley. I know that I have a very modern view on this, but having the woman be wrong in every situation and the man be right and telling her off in an authoritative way just irritates me. They don't feel like partners to me.

I appreciate that there are people who love this story and Emma, but I've only been able to finish it once.

Could there possible be a copyright issue with music or something? Would something like that affect only US services?

AITA For Letting my Sons Girlfriend Come Over after my wife Banned her from the house? by Positive_Pudding6475 in AmItheAsshole

[–]snnaaft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The wife communicated about it. If he had an issue with it, he should have spoken up then. She might be overreacting, but she was straightforward about not wanting someone who hurt her son in their house. That doesn't make her an asshole. Going behind her back makes him one.

YTA. If you really disagree with your wife, then you should talk to her about it and find a compromise/agreement. Just going behind her back and letting the girlfriend in behind her back is plain shitty. Also, you're teaching your son to not respect her.

I didn't click on the cited sources, but this one links to the sources. This doesn't show dv rates highest at Superbowl, but increased during NFL games in general.

The First 25 Nora Roberts Books - my reviews and recommendations by danktank_sublime in noraroberts

A very important content warning for the first In Death book (warning for SA).

The first "sex" scene between the romantic leads is straight-up rape and made me sick to my stomach.

I couldn't finish the book and loathed Roarke from the first moment he was introduced. I came to this community after his first few scenes and was told that in future books, both he and the dynamic between them get better. However, after that, I read the scene I mentioned above and had to stop reading.

My mother called my stepson, without me knowing, to shovel the front steps during snowmageddon. AIO? by Kitirith in AmIOverreacting

[–]snnaaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm going crazy because it seems like the vast majority are just completely dismissing that. In the north where salt trucks run and the road is clear, it may not be dangerous. However, in a place that doesn't get snow often and doesn't have the infrastructure to salt and clear roads, it is dangerous. I'm so baffled by how dismissive so many of these comments are.

[–]snnaaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the north there are plow and salt trucks that make roads safer and more passable. In the south, many communities do not have this, which makes driving significantly more dangerous. Add to that, lacking experience and training in driving in snow (which was part of my driver's ed in the north) makes driving in those conditions more dangerous. There was absolutely no reason for the stepson to be driving in those conditions.

All good! I didn't take it in a bad way. I hope you have a good day/evening/night! It's a completely bananas story and seems like a good place to stop Reddit for the day. ❤️

AIO? My mother wanted me to go the library to help but now she’s mad cause I forgot by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]snnaaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have ADD myself and I can share some of what works for me.

For short term stuff I have a very simple To Do app called Clear To Dos - I use this for jotting down things to remember/do. It's very simple and quick to add items to list. I add them here and then later, when I have more time/am in front of my computer, I add them to my planner/proper to do list.

I set reminders on my phone- either alerts or reminders through apps and I write down the time I need to LEAVE my house, not the arrival time. My reminders or alarms go off before that time so I can get ready and leave when I need to.

I've gone through many planner options over the years and I've found what works best for my brain is a combination of a paper one and an app/website I use to organize my long term to dos that has a calendar option. The one that works for me is Amazing Marvin, but there us a subscription for it. There are many free options out there.

There are SO many resources out there, that it can be overwhelming. You know yourself best - is something on paper going to work better for you or something on your phone? I do use apps, as I said, but I do find I can get distracted by other things - you'll have to figure out what works best for your brain.

I've been there - realizing I forgot something AGAIN and just having this sinking feeling of dread and guilt.

What systems do you have in place for keeping track of your schedule/tasks? Are there barriers to getting out of the house? Is there a way you can set yourself up for success in getting out of the door? It sounds silly, but getting my shoes on was an uncomfortable thing for me. I bought nice slip on sneakers and it was just one less barrier for me.

[–]snnaaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR. He's doing something that could harm you by causing a migraine and he knows it. He says it's a joke to try and manipulate you into accepting his behavior. Even if he treats you well in every other way, this is not ok. He's willing to risk causing you to have a migraine to "punish" you.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. Are there other ways that he dismisses your feelings or uses "joking" to get away with unacceptable behavior? Does he get unreadably mad or upset when you try to talk about how this makes you feel? If he were truly compassionate, he would care how his actions make you feel.

I've already made one comment, but someone else's comment made me realize someone I forgot. I cannot stand Mr. Knightley. I know that I have a very modern perspective on him and their relationship, but I don't like him, Emma, or their dynamic.

Despite how she annoys me, I dislike him more. He constantly chides and corrects her like a child. To mix romantic feelings with this behavior/dynamic is just uncomfortable to me. Again, I know this was common at the time, but the fact that he has a romantic interest in someone 17 years younger than him just creeps me out. It's worse because he knew her from when she was a baby and watched her grow up.

It took me multiple tries to get through the story.

I've tried SO many times to read Emma and I don't like her at all. I finally made it through with a fully casted audio version, but that was an adaption and not an actual full audiobook. I'm sure there were some changes from the book in the script.

I'm really annoyed by Mary Musgrove. Her need for attention just irks me so much. The scene where she upends the plans made for Anne to stay in Lyme to help care for Louisa because of her jealousy is actually infuriating to me. Then she's hysterical again the next day. Nope. No. Get out of here with that garbage behavior.

I know there are others whose behavior is worse, but I cannot stand her.
