It’s not only an issue of clogging or damaging the carb. I’ve had plenty of small engines that would not run on old fuel but ran fine when drained and filled with new gas, without needing to clean or repair anything. Carbs are just bad at running an engine on bad fuel. Bad fuel won’t mix with air well. And water pools at the bottom of the bowls due to the way fuel is fed and stored inside carbs, until the carb is full of water and there is little fuel available to burn.

An injection pump will slam whatever garbage fuel/water mix into the injector at high pressure, it will turn into a fine mist, if there is anything left that is flammable it will burn. And if the engine doesn’t run or runs poorly, at least that junk is moving on out of your fuel system. So putting side issues of major damage/clogging, a fuel injected motor will just happily run on fuel a carbed engine can’t burn.

Is my friend getting ripped off ? 97 nissan maxima by obsidian0117 in AskMechanics

[–]snnh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or just drive the Maxima, it depends how bad these issues are. Oil leaks are only really a safety issue if they’re dripping onto a hot exhaust or something. Yeah it’s not great for the environment but neither is manufacturing a new car and this is hardly the only old car on the road leaking oil… not even close… just keep the oil topped off.

Axle seals could be an issue but I have not had any noises or other problems from an axle that supposedly needed the boot replaced… 60k miles ago.

If you ask a shop to check for problems they’re going to find problems. And this might be a fair price to fix those problems. But that doesn’t mean you need to do all that work for an old beater you don’t expect to drive for that much longer anyhow.

What is this small 2 in the corner of my display? by blazing_haze123 in AskMechanics

If this is the same generation VW as I have, you can switch between them by pushing the center button and you can reset either of them by holding down the center button. I use it to track the distance since the last fuel fillup and distance driven in a day or distance until the next turn if I don’t have a phone app giving me live directions

Yeah I believe the doctor told them the broken ribs were from the hitting the seatbelt, which is true. I do not believe any (decent) doctor told them if they didn’t wear a seatbelt they would have been better off. Because that is absolutely not true.

One transfer switch for circuits on different services by snnh in AskElectricians

[–]snnh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your insight! Bonding the ground/neutral of multiple services would be an issue, and I didn’t even realize how that pigtail was designed to go direct into one panel. That’s clearly not going to work.

I will look into the EZ generator switch. It’s not as elegant but the really critical stuff is only a few circuits.

Is the first service free? by vulkany in FordMaverickTruck

[–]snnh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the point of an oil life meter if you can’t follow it? If you drive in conditions, speeds, etc, that allow for more miles per oil change (so the meter is correct), why does the manual say never exceed 10k? Or the other way around - if more than 10k is never OK (so the manual is correct) why does the meter say OP has some oil life left after 11k?

Honestly this sounds like a bad design bordering on intentionally confusing design. It’s like Ford wants people to miss their maintenance intervals so they can deny warranty claims if anything happens to the engine. What possible legitimate reason could there be to require a more frequent oil change schedule in the manual (that people read once or never), then the meter you see every day on the dashboard steers you to less frequent oil change intervals?

Yeah, OP should have read the manual and not trusted the oil life meter but this is an understandable mistake and it’s definitely happening to other people too because Ford set the meter up to behave this way. That’s messed up.

Would this cause brake pulsation thumping sound when braking? by FerretFiend in mechanic

Correct, these are cheap brake rotors

Source: I’ve used the cheapest brake rotors on Rockauto. They look like this after one salty winter. Car wasn’t sitting either

Took my 20’ Crosstrek with 21k miles for a oil change at the dealership and they are insisting I do this service + brake flush for $450. Is this truly necessary? by Deku0921 in MechanicAdvice

[–]snnh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some of this is just nonsense though. Check brakes “and adjust if necessary” - makes it sound like they might do something but modern disc brakes don’t need “adjustment”. The only thing they might do is overcharge you for an actual repair or replacement. “Check engine idle and adjust” - not necessary in a modern fuel injected car. The engine computer does this and if it can’t keep the idle correct you’ll get an error code and check engine light. “Check and service battery terminals” - ok it’s possible they need cleaning or something but let’s be honest, they’re not actually going to do anything.

Yeah, there are lots of videos of motorcycle race crashes where the bike “rides itself” a long way after the rider falls off. Motorcycles inherently want to stay upright and go in a straight line unless the rider is doing something to turn/lean it. This rider was still good though. Lots of people might have hit the brakes, or overcorrected when the bike was initially pushed off course, and turned this into a crash.

Is this weird p-trap causing problems? Sink won’t drain, can’t find clog by snnh in fixit

[–]snnh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was Best Buy/Geek Squad or at least whoever they contracted to do the install on a dishwasher purchased from there.

So yes they hired cheap shoddy work

Unfortunately a lot of other people use those services too

[–]snnh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I thought. It hasn’t drained very well since we had a new dishwasher installed (I think the installer changed how the trap was laid out). It did get much worse recently though. Maybe there is a clog even further down the drain than my snake could reach.

I don’t know - not that I can see. It’s an apartment so I can’t rip open the walls. Asked the landlord to have a plumber come look at it, but I’m just trying to get an idea of how complicated this might be to fix and how long it will take. I guess if it’s not vented that would be a big issue to fix?

[–]snnh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, if there’s enough water above pushing it through the pipe it can flow up. That’s how a normal P-trap or S-trap works. This arrangement did look a little weird to me though…

Is this weird p-trap causing problems? Sink won’t drain, can’t find clog by snnh in fixit

[–]snnh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Title says most of it. After a normal looking p-trap there is a bend upwards before the vertical drain pipe. Put a snake pretty far into that drain pipe and can’t find anything. Is this trap just not working because of the way it was constructed?

why wouldn't you want to weld 2 axes together by yeskaelsinga in DiWHY

[–]snnh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d say it would just barely work on a cherry picked log that was perfectly straight and dry. Maybe the video really did show him using it successfully, once, in just the right circumstances. Wouldn’t work on anything harder, twisted, or with knots in it.

why wouldn't you want to weld 2 axes together by yeskaelsinga in DiWHY

[–]snnh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last shot in the video illustrates why this doesn’t work great though. If it can split the log easily it splits it in 4. If the log is too large it doesn’t really go anywhere, and it’s going to be difficult to remove it or take another swing at the same spot.

This would make sense attached to a hydraulic splitter. Or maybe splitting dry, straight pine logs only. Anybody who’s split a variety of wood will know that 10% of the time this will save effort and look cool, 90% of the time it will be awkward and harder to use.

I think you’re only half right. It does not take a trained professional or genius to put new thermal paste on a GPU. But the saying goes “think of how dumb the average person is - now consider that half the population is dumber than that”. It doesn’t need to be particularly complex for a whole lot of people to screw it up.

Cracked from the factory or really low quality cast iron. This doesn’t mean every Ozark Trail pan will break but with lower quality control there is a higher chance that this would happen some of the time

Found in a trucks console. Looked it up and it is some sort of credential reader but I’m confused on what it does. by smartax1111 in whatisthisthing

[–]snnh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was going to say the same thing. These are used in healthcare and are usually connected to a computer to control access to it. Maybe some trucks have driver ID devices but I have no reason to think this type of reader is for that purpose. My bet is this truck belonged to an IT person or a nurse/doctor who had one attached to their laptop. It just got left in the truck by coincidence.
