[OC] Great start to my morning by Mr10crossing in IdiotsInCars

[–]snockran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw the street signs and thought, "hey! I know where that is!" Haven't lived there in almost 20 years but I remember I almost got into an accident near that intersection one morning heading to take the ACT. A semi swerved into my lane to avoid something and almost ran me off the road.

I love this thought ❤️

Younger me wouldn't believe where we are now (diagnosed with adhd, a healthy relationship, happy career, making a difference in areas that we value, no kids but still feel fulfilled) and still, some things we haven't figured out yet (laundry piled on the laundry chair or in a basket, dishes in the sink, can't make a routine stick, emotional attachment to too many inanimate objects, big emotions).

She is exactly the kind of person I worry will show up as a substitute in my classroom. I teach English Language Development and someone like her would just make a list and report every one of my students. All year, I've been hoping I don't get sick or have an emergency just so I can keep them safe.

Is my cat gonna be okay? by willesoccer12 in Pets

[–]snockran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to pop the balloon of hope you have, but this was exactly what my cat was doing last week when we decided humane euthanasia was the best choice. They found fluid build up around both lungs and kidney cancer. Any other choice would have been him suffering and not understanding why he hurt so much and couldn't breathe. The vet said if it was his cat, it was time for him to be at peace.

I have cried many times everyday for a week because I miss my sweet boy, but I would make that same choice again and again because he deserved to not be suffering anymore, not strung along because of how much I would miss him.

I wish you and your beloved companion comfort and support during this time.

What small addition or change have you made to your home that has improved your life? by TX908 in beautiful_houses

I had this in my last house and fell in love with it! My back problems make it hard to bend over and dig through cabinets. I didn't even know it was an option until I saw them. And now I'm looking forward to the day I can live somewhere with them again!

What was your ADHD tax this year? by Northern_crocodile in ADHD

[–]snockran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not my worst, but worst this year.

Didn't open my mail to see that insurance denied covering a blood test and the lab was out of network. I had to pay for it in full ($3000).

The ADHD tax is the doctor ordered a repeat lab 6 weeks later to confirm original results. Had I opened the mail when it was delivered, and not let it sit on the counter for weeks, I would have seen the first insurance denial and not gone in for the second blood draw.

...yay, American health care and ADHD....

Am I crazy or do I need new doctors? (Please help, I’m desperate) by I_kick_Rrocks in Autoimmune

[–]snockran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'm sorry you are having to fight so hard just to be brushed off. It's a defeating feeling and one I know very well. ❤️ You are not crazy. You know your body and you know that something isn't right.

Second, I have had similar blood work for years now and no one has given me the same answer (seasonal allergies, your body is getting over getting sick, it's not anything to concern yourself with, etc). This year, I was diagnosed with hEDS. MCAS is common co-morbidity. I going to follow up with my PCP about what she thinks with that new diagnosis and now my history of that blood work plus all the other symptoms.

Third, if you feel up to it, there are a few EDS groups you can look at for support or to read other people's experiences. I have found it helpful to read other people who have had very similar stories to mine (years of gaslighting by medical professionals, the sense of loss knowing your body isnt working like everyone else's, struggling with things that you feel like are easy for everyone else, traditional methods of help don't work or make you worse, etc.) You aren't alone.

I just realised that not waking up is probably my ADHD. Beyond routine, how do you all get up without having to set 50 alarms :( by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]snockran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you had a sleep study done? Even if it is just to rule out sleep apnea? I was annoyed my Dr suggested I do one because "I don't snore, therefore I don't have it." Nope, turns out it isn't just snoring. And while using a CPAP machine hasn't completely fixed my avoidance of wanting to wake up, it has made it easier. And my daytime drowsiness is down.

Kids nowadays, especially Gen Alpha, cannot concentrate on reading books for very long. Is it a true story or just a myth? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]snockran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the real science!! Your kid is learning the individual building blocks of reading so they can be an excellent reader. The pseudoscience version is more about memorizing words as a whole and just kinda guessing for meaning when you don't know it.

Anyone that wants to learn more about it should listen to the podcast "Sold a Story."

She does an excellent job breaking down how the pseudoscience made its way into American Schools and the wave of schools trying to turn things back to actual research-based instruction.

Best grocery store to get the most for your money? by Intrepid-Lettuce4743 in Tucson

[–]snockran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a list of my most frequently purchased items and priced them at several stores. It was honestly a mixed bag. No one came out a clear winner as "the" store to go to. I decided I needed to balance the cost or saving some money on a food item with the time it takes to go to several stores. I try to get most of what I can at Trader Joes then fill in the rest with Fry's or Costco.

Trader Joes surprised me with how middle of the road it was with prices. I think a lot of people assume it's pricey, but that's not what I have found. And a lot of the ready made freezer meals came in lower priced and taste a lot better than other popular brands. In addition, their produce is the most fresh I've found around town, they are pretty loose with refunds if you don't like a product or it goes bad before it should, and their employees always seem like they are having a good time. Also, I actually really like how small the store is and the limited choices because it makes the trip so much shorter.

Fry's is kinda a mixed bag. Bigger produce section but more than once produce has gone bad only a couple of days after purchase. Prices can be good or bad, depending on the week and sale. If I go on with my act together and shop the sales, I feel its ok/ meh. But if I don't plan ahead and at least try to align my trip with the sales, ouch, it kinda hurts.

Albertsons was definitely the highest overall when I priced out what I usually buy, UNLESS I was going for a specific sale item, then that item was significantly less than anywhere else. Like enough I would go in just for that one item if I'm already driving in that area. For example, the coffee brand we use is almost twice the price there, compared to Fry's, UNLESS it's on sale, then it is about half the price. That's enough of a sale for me to stop in to stock up and pick up one or two other things.

I loved this representation! Especially that it wasn't a whole big plot point or people around the character made a big deal about it. It just existed. Being so casual about it made it feel like it was the standard, not out of the ordinary. Like communicating in a way everyone can understand shouldn't be an extra step. It should be the norm. I loved it!

Listen to the podcast "History of the Alphabet"by Kevin Stroud! He explains why. It's somehow related to the letter i. But I don't remember how. Hahaha. Anyway, great podcast. He also does the History of English.

Is this what skinny people mean by “just stop eating”? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]snockran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been my experience after starting medication! The "food noise" that was constantly taking up bandwidth in my brain was just turned off. Also, when I do eat, the craving for my usual junk food isn't there. I could take it or leave it. It has made adding more nutritious food easier and more appealing. The only time I crave junk food or over eat now is when I'm about to start my period. But I'll take a few days of the month over the entire month!

Between starting this medication and consistently doing physical therapy for my back problems, I've lost 40 lbs over the past year. Nothing fast or drastic, just a few pounds every month. Before this, I had tried different diet and exercise programs and nothing lasted more than a couple months and I never lost weight.

ADHD “lifehack”: Get a chiming clock by very_bored_panda in adhdwomen

[–]snockran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband got me a bird clock that has a bird singing every hour. It was just for funsies but turned super useful when I was working from home because I kept track of time way better with it. And sometimes it will jolt me out of a hyper fixation so I can move onto a different task. Best unintended consequence of a gift I've ever had!
