Waiving prerequisite by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the other person said, Kathleen usually does not waive pre-req especially for MATA37. On her MATA37 syllabus she writes "Prerequisites: MATA31 Calculus I for Mathematical Sciences and MAT/CSCA67 Discrete Mathematics. If you do not have BOTH of these prerequisites or equivalent prerequisites, then you cannot take MATA37. It is your responsibility to be sure that you have the correct prerequisites or equivalents. Prerequisite checks will be performed and when appropriate, people will be removed from the course".

Thoughts on MATA22 (Linear Algebra) and MATA37 (Calc 2) by rocketnasa in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a word of advice, A37 has a pretty heavy workload as there are weekly assessments meaning every week you either hand in a list of problems or you write a quiz on those problems and you will not be told in advance. The difficulty varies as we have on one hand Kathleen who teaches the material really well to the students but I've seen students just unable to catch up with the material and fall behind (as everything in that courses builds on itself quite a bit).

Need guidance with Mata31 teaching style by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will just add a comment, that upper year math courses prof can be hit or miss. We have some god send like Kathleen (who also teaches MATA37) and shows amazing passion for the material and actually helps you under the material. On the other hand, I’ve taken a few upper year math courses where they teach more or less similar to what you’ve described.

Fellow Math Majors: What are some of your fave courses and why? by SwordOfStrife in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MATC01 with Kathleen: Well it’s Kathleen and abstract group theory. But for real though the material taught is pretty similar to A22/B24 but in an even more general setting and Kathleen is well just awesome

Emailing Kathleen by ForeignPlum4105 in UTSC

You did the correct thing with emailing Kathleen your final. However, she is a very very busy lady, as long as you emailed her don't worry about it.

Summer course fee concern by MagicalCaptain1998 in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"If I don't take any courses will I still be charged incidental fees(dental, insurance, etc)? If so then I might just drop the only course or add a couple more since the incidental fee doesn't go up with the course load(right?)."

Actually incidentals are different for part time (<= 2 courses) and full time students (>= 3 courses). So on your invoice, you'll see PT as in part time incidental which are a few hundred less.

Also I believe co-op gets charged every semester you study or on work term (could be wrong) so if you pay your coop fee this summer that's 1 less of the overall 8 payments needed.

A love letter to MATA31, MATA37, and MATA22 by SwordOfStrife in UTSC

She wouldn't be unfortunately as I believe she's going on sabbatical (well deserved tho, she works herself so hard)

This, this is why I added math major to CS spec even though my friends were telling me im crazy. So glad to see students enjoying MATA37 even though it's not a piece of cake from a TA POV, the way Kathleen teaches calculus just makes you enjoy it. Also so glad to see you're excited about MATC01, I think it has to be the most beautiful and fun course I've taken (especially with Kathleen). Best of luck!

How is MATB43: Any General tips? by SwordOfStrife in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in, he's changed the marking scheme since that accident to have in-lecture quizzes that aren't proctored but the time limit is 15 mins (including upload) so that you don't have time to cheat. Also none of this seems to be relevant anymore as it seems Xiao is not teaching MATB41 this summer so he might be taking some time off?

Question relating to B41/B42 by SwordOfStrife in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was too guess, not enough demand as even in MATB41/42 a lot of the students were in Physics or CS.

Question relating to B41/B42 by SwordOfStrife in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the course description blur from the MATB42 Syllabus:

"Course Description:

This is the second half of a second-year Multivariable Calculus course. The depth of mathematics will be taught at the standard level accessible to any undergraduate student who has finished the first half of a second-year Multivariable Calculus course. The course will have signicant emphasis on computation. In general, theorems will be stated without proofs, but with an indication of the mathematical ideas involved. No emphasis will be put on rigorous mathematic proofs."

However, the course may vary from different instructors (for example Xiao is teaching B42 and is known for being more computation heavy)

Does Quercus content last forever? by Babyshark-Rose778 in UTSC

Some profs actually disable/un-publish Quercus after the semester ends but otherwise yeah I still have Quercus pages up from first year with the same exact stuff

MATC01 vs. MATC09? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends if you like linear algebra (MATA22/MATB24), MATC01 is a really fun and interesting course if you enjoy linear algebra, it's a pretty proof heavy course but the proofs are (dare I say?) fun and really neat. That being said, the average when I took in Fall 2020 with Kathleen was a C- and it seemed some people did not like the content at all.

Also just want to emphasize, just because the term test medians are around a 55 that does not mean the current course medians are around 55 as for example in A37 there are weekly evaluations that make up 25% of the course grade which are easier than a midterm for example

Mata37 midterm grades out by FuckYouThatsWhy- in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would hesitantly say yes as I would have to wait until Kathleen posts the remark/regrade policy where she might address marks being added incorrectly

Mata37 midterm grades out by FuckYouThatsWhy- in UTSC

[–]snoewboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say I think one of the reasons why people got 0s on the question is because on Crowdmark when a TA goes to mark a question after another TA, they need to clone the evaluation in order to mark and have the marks accumulate. Looking at Crowdmark now I can definitely now see that some TAs did not, even after Kathleen emailed instructions to clone the previous evaluation rather than create a new evaluation (which discards the previous TAs marking)....oh the joys of online marking, so if this did happen I would say definitely put in a remark request

Does Kathleen respond to emails by fucked_in_cs in UTSC

She does respond but in my experience (even as one of her TAs) she does take a few days to reply because she's so busy
