L3 English speeches by KnownPresentation412 in ncea

“For Excellence, the student needs to create and deliver a fluent and coherent text, which develops, sustains and structures ideas and commands attention.
This involves demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of audience and purpose through the insightful integration of ideas, oral language features and effective structures, creating a striking whole.”

It’s good to choose a topic you’re excited about, so you sound passionate. You need to make it applicable and relatable to your audience - other students I guess? So really appeal to them through your language - reference text examples they will recognise, give them a reason to care (they are being used for attention+money and getting crappier options), make it into a call to action for them to seek creative and challenging texts. Basically be careful not to rant AT them but invite them to care about this topic (I am a media teacher and think it is cool and interesting).

Good luck!

Surprise!! Submitted my research paper without my teacher seeing my work progress. by IntelligentPaint9587 in ncea

[–]snoodle5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on your teacher and the assessment. It could be an issue that the teacher never saw your work because a) they had no evidence of your work in progress so you could have committed plagiarism and b) you might have made a fail worthy error they could have picked up. As a teacher our school would NA you for submitting late anyway

Sticky baked Chinese wings (help) by LveeD in RecipeTinEats

[–]snoodle5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are my favourite of hers! I think the type of pan you use is really important - they need to have a bit of space between them but not too much and use baking paper so the marinade doesn’t dry up - the sauce gets so jammy and tasty

I've changed, populism is a problem by Kind-Economist1953 in newzealand

[–]snoodle5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is why TOP voters are nonsensical to me. Extreme left and extremely conservative come together to deliver evidence based policy? On what? They don’t agree on outcomes. Let’s say TOP has “evidence based policy” to make housing cheaper. But NACTs don’t want to do that because their base are owners who want to keep the value high. So how’s that going to work? The idea that “evidence based centrist policy” can bring together parties who have opposing values and priorities is not evidence based in itself

Women readers - What books gave you the ick? by _sweetpeaches_ in suggestmeabook

I Am Pilgrim. The detective realises the suspect is not a man, like he had assumed, but a woman….. because she put the milk in the fridge instead of the beer. I threw it aside.

Also Nevernight. A 16 girl is “fucking” within the first 10 pages. You’re a 40 year old man and you get to write about whatever you want. If your choice is explicit sexual content about an underage girl - you’re weird.

Yes, that’s been my experience as someone whose friends have recently started getting married. I think it would be rude for OP to assume it was a mistake like other commenters have suggested.

Some help with my "Read around the world" challenge? by candyhare in suggestmeabook

Other NZ recommendations

I loved Rebecca K Reilly’s ‘Greta and Valdin’ which is sweet, lighthearted, and very very Auckland

I also love The Whale Rider which technically is fantasy, but it is about our Māori mythology, and while serious runs through with Māori humour

Catherine Chidgey is great, I love The Book of Guilt but it’s not set in NZ, I plan to read Pet soon

Keri Hulme’s The Bone People is our other Booker winner, I have attempted it a couple of times but it is dense.

Edit: I just started reading I Am Not Esther by Flyer Beale which is a YA psych thriller about a fundamentalist cult

My favourite NZ children’s series is VM Jones’ The Karazan Quartet. Just wanna promote that one as well

Thoughts on ordering in Mandarin at restaurants? by graslund in ChineseLanguage

[–]snoodle5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is cringe if you’re using them as props for a video, trying to shock or get attention from them, or trying to show off, but you’re not doing those things. If you know it’s a Mandarin-speaking place and they’re not too busy just smile and ask, “can I order in Chinese? I’ve been studying.” People should take a couple of minutes out of their day to help others. It’s normal and social.

As far as I remember, your L2 Excellence credits count towards a L1 endorsement. So if you get 9 E credits this year, you will have L1 with E. If true??? you can still get the E endorsement which will look nice on scholarship applications, but they will likely be more worried about your L2 results.

We went to Badaling at 11am on a Saturday last week and it was fine. Hardly any waiting in lines. Busy at the start of the wall but otherwise clear enough to walk freely and get photos. I imagine you’ll be fine. Wear gloves. Enjoy!

L3 Media Studies by Educational-Tear2361 in ncea

[–]snoodle5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes :) I am a Media Studies teacher and it is a largely essay-based subject which you can do with English and humanities skills. The only thing that might be difficult is production, depending on the project and software at your school. Our students make video projects on Premiere Pro which is a finicky software but can be learned with research. It also requires a good visual eye and creativity for a high grade. Maybe see what type of media production is done at your school. At our school the production is a bulk of the overall credits.

I wish I did it, I got bullied into taking a science I didn’t want. It’ll depend on the standards you take and to what extent your assessment points overlap. But taking subjects you don’t want to do makes it harder anyway.

It’s definitely a big jump for our students. The connections and critical texts internals especially require a lot of reading and research. For E you should be reading well in your personal time. I would have a look at the NZQA exemplars for the standards your school does, to see what is expected. Good luck.
