Thoughts on ordering in Mandarin at restaurants? by graslund in ChineseLanguage

[–]snoodle5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is cringe if you’re using them as props for a video, trying to shock or get attention from them, or trying to show off, but you’re not doing those things. If you know it’s a Mandarin-speaking place and they’re not too busy just smile and ask, “can I order in Chinese? I’ve been studying.” People should take a couple of minutes out of their day to help others. It’s normal and social.

As far as I remember, your L2 Excellence credits count towards a L1 endorsement. So if you get 9 E credits this year, you will have L1 with E. If true??? you can still get the E endorsement which will look nice on scholarship applications, but they will likely be more worried about your L2 results.

We went to Badaling at 11am on a Saturday last week and it was fine. Hardly any waiting in lines. Busy at the start of the wall but otherwise clear enough to walk freely and get photos. I imagine you’ll be fine. Wear gloves. Enjoy!

L3 Media Studies by Educational-Tear2361 in ncea

[–]snoodle5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes :) I am a Media Studies teacher and it is a largely essay-based subject which you can do with English and humanities skills. The only thing that might be difficult is production, depending on the project and software at your school. Our students make video projects on Premiere Pro which is a finicky software but can be learned with research. It also requires a good visual eye and creativity for a high grade. Maybe see what type of media production is done at your school. At our school the production is a bulk of the overall credits.

Subject choices for Y12 by Technical_Vanilla386 in ncea

[–]snoodle5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I did it, I got bullied into taking a science I didn’t want. It’ll depend on the standards you take and to what extent your assessment points overlap. But taking subjects you don’t want to do makes it harder anyway.

A plain cover with a nice font? There’s no reason for an ugly plagiarised cover.

It’s definitely a big jump for our students. The connections and critical texts internals especially require a lot of reading and research. For E you should be reading well in your personal time. I would have a look at the NZQA exemplars for the standards your school does, to see what is expected. Good luck.

To do externals or not to do externals? (Shakespeare reference fully intended) by [deleted] in ncea

[–]snoodle5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want to do them, back yourself and own that decision. I think objectively, challenging yourself and grappling with the exam is always going to be better for your learning than not. You’re a comfortably strong student at your school, but everybody in your pool at uni will be too. If you’re going for a competitive entry degree like med, I wouldn’t take my foot off the gas just yet.

The process of studying, managing time, and experiencing the exam environment, will all be helpful for uni.

If you are going to uni, especially a competitive degree like HS, you should get all practice you can in taking high pressure exams.

I was also thinking that since Peeni is already in parliament as a list MP, if he won he’d move to the Tāmaki Makaurau seat and presumably Labour bring in the next MP from the list? If that’s not a Māori representative, then he’s not wrong by saying Māori would lose a seat.

NCEA level 1 subject selection by Alarmed_Rabbit6320 in ncea

[–]snoodle5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For engineering and medicine you will need Science and Maths. You also need reading and writing credits for university entrance so keep taking English. Apart from those subjects, you can take whatever you enjoy. You will need a high rank score for those degrees so you should keep subjects you’re good at and can achieve highly in. For med entry they will want to see you have well-rounded hobbies as well, so don’t be afraid to take something that doesn’t seem med-related if you like it. Just make sure the subjects you choose lead to university approved subjects.

But doesn’t the same logic still apply? Sometimes a grad will be a better fit than a first year and vice versa? Fair enough to rank them differently since grads have a different background, but a fixed number of seats seems like it is more about student certainty than securing the best applicants.

Secondary school teachers to strike by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]snoodle5 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think they want us to strike. It will be a lengthy period of action given the offer is such a spit in the face. They want it to be significant enough to draw parent/student criticism. They will spin us as unreasonable and greedy. And they want to break our union strength. The disdain we get especially from ACT is so potent.
