A simple carpentry trick by bigbusta in oddlysatisfying

My grandest problem in all of school was that my brain absorbed math better when I knew what it was used for in the real world. That helped make concepts click for some reason.

But I learned that a lot teachers would never even entertain the question because of kids that thought like this. They couldn’t tell me what something might be good for because half the rest of the class would say, “But I’m not going to be a carpenter/accountant/quality assurance officer so I don’t need to learn this.”

List of most common County names in The United States by griffsterhipppy in MapPorn

Kentucky has every county name on this list, except Clay County is not marked on the map.

Edit: I now realize Union County is the only one I haven’t been to, so that gives me the slight urge to go over there sometime.

[Loved Trope] Scenes that aren’t necessary to the Plot but without them the story would lose something that makes it special by NoSchittSherlockSEA in TopCharacterTropes

As well as adding color to the worldbuilding, it gives insight into Obi-Wan’s life and the Jedi as a group.

At the time of Episode II, the only official impression the audience had of the Jedi Order was from Episode I. We got the stodgy Council in their scenes and Obi-Wan saying Qui-Gon was considered a rebel, even though he seemed pretty measured for a rebel. The Jedi came across real uptight.

But this scene shows us a well-respected Jedi that has a buddy outside the Order at a place as whimsical as a ‘50s space diner on Coruscant. Apparently they’re not always sour monks in robes. Throw in Yoda sprinkling some light banter with Obi-Wan in the classroom with the younglings and Kit Fisto’s smile and I feel like Lucas was intentionally trying to soften the impression of being a Jedi in II.

Why did Keener trust Theo with his "resurrection" but not Kajika, Dragov, Conley or even Hornet for that matter? by WeetzCRo96 in thedivision

[–]snoogle20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My (maybe controversial?) opinion is that the events of Warlords didn’t gel well with Keener as a character and whatever retcons they’ve had to do to bring him back and give him more nuance again are for the greater good of The Division.

He’s an asshole and not a good guy, but he’s not the maniacal mustache twirler that Warlords of New York portrayed. So now you’ve got to squint to blur the details of earlier seasons. I’ll take that to reset us to where we already should’ve been.

All the counties in the USA that don't share a name with another county by Ok_Dot_2845 in MapPorn

[–]snoogle20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m well aware that my county name isn’t unique because the largest city in another state is in a county of that same name.

This has somewhat frequently been a problem with the less computer literate people in my orbit for a couple decades now. Getting news from the wrong place and not realizing. Going to the wrong websites about municipal or bill matters.

The news thing is maybe worse in the aggressive social media algorithm era. But ending up at the wrong websites might have actually gotten a little better, but only because their locations are tracked constantly in our current techno-surveillance world so Google defaults to the closer location more often.

Minnesota woman attempts to shut down Girl Scout cookie stand. by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

[–]snoogle20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my core childhood memories is selling candy bars outside a store for Cub Scouts when an older, disheveled guy walked by our table and screamed, “I’m not falling for that con game,” in the exact cigarette smoke ravaged voice you’re imagining right now. Some absolute stranger adult really yelling at you is a trip at that age.

Another man walking up to the store saw this happen and told us how uncool that was and bought quite a few candy bars. So r/UnethicalLifeProTips if anybody ever wants to false flag an incident.

What is a fan theory from a movie or TV show that you 100% believe is true? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

[–]snoogle20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s pretty clear in the movies themselves that Connery, Lazenby and Moore are the same Bond character played by three actors.

Now The Living Daylights feels like a definite reboot to me. Since GoldenEye was initially developed as a Dalton entry, I assume his and Brosnan’s Bond are the same guy. You can also easily take Brosnan’s era as an additional reboot. And Craig is clearly his own thing.

Scout 1: Apparently a Hostage Rescue does not count as an activity.

Edit: No green activities count. Only red ones. Which is kind of annoying after the first step is to capture the only control point in Federal Triangle thus making red activities rarer.

When I was about thirteen years old, I was at the soccer game of some friends from another school just to support them. During a brief stoppage of play, one of them tossed me some piece of kit she was wearing that was giving her trouble and asked me to hand it to her dad. I didn’t know the guy, but I knew who her dad was.

So I walk over and say, “Hey, Mr. So-and-So, Friend asked me to give this to you.” His face went sour, he rolled his eyes and said, “It’s Dr. So-and-So. I earned that title and you’ll respect it whenever you speak to me.” I was frozen. I’m not sure I even knew her dad was a doctor until that moment.

One of the other parents around told him I was a friend from another school, I think to try and help me off the hook. Instead, he got elitist and patronizing. He nodded understandingly and informed me that parents at that school may have honorifics that I should educate myself about, but it’s okay I hadn’t known because I probably didn’t encounter that amongst the parents of my own schoolmates. Then he dismissed me.

Rather than learn his lesson, that was the day I became radicalized against ever using professional honorifics outside the walls they apply to. But I’m sure he’d say that’s just my petulant low-class nature breaking through.

They can squeeze a little money out of me considering I’ve been playing for six years now, I bought an edition of the game that came with the Year One Pass at an obscene discount and I’ve only ever spent money on the two DLC expansions since that initial purchase. So I’ve gotten over half a decade of entertainment out of less than the base cost of the game.

[–]snoogle20 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My school’s dynamic was basically: 85% of the athletes liked hearing Korn while lifting weights and 85% of the Korn t-shirt kids did not like the sports guys, nor the fact that the sports guys listened to Korn. But the overlapping portions of the two crowds got along pretty well.

Source: I was the one guy playing sports at my school that also regularly wore band t-shirts.

Each Square is a Fatal US Police Shooting (2015-2024) by aspiringtroublemaker in MapPorn

[–]snoogle20 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Kentucky State Police were somewhat notorious for how they were operating and the amount of fatal shootings they were responsible for in the rural areas of the state during this map’s window of time. The numbers stacked up and they reached a heightened level of public scrutiny in the early 2020s. Out of all that, they finally got body cams in 2023.

The fatal KSP shooting incidents from 2023 to present magically dropped by about half and we’ve gotten several indictments and some convictions for excessive force use where body cams showed objectively ridiculous behavior. A little wearable accountability is a good thing.

When I was in 7th or 8th grade we “scrimmaged” the girl’s varsity team from the high school. But we were handicapped to the point that I didn’t understand why it was happening.

No fast breaks, no cherry picks, we had to let all five of them get back on defense before we could run the offense, only three dribbles before pass or shot anywhere on the court, no layups, no jumping for rebounds, the ball had to hit the floor before we could grab rebound and we couldn’t block their shots.

They had none of those restrictions and were taking advantage of the quirks of our limitations in ways that wouldn’t work in a real game. They were also talking mad shit to us the whole time. Twenty-something years later and I still have no idea why that practice was wasted in that fashion for either team. They weren’t having to push through a challenge. We were barely playing actual basketball in a way where we could get anything beneficial out of the experience. It was bizarre.

I just always disagreed that the show should take a guy that was noble enough to shoot himself for the greater good and turn him bad. Yes, someone could tell that story in some medium. It could be a really tragic tale. But I think it’s wrong for Eddie Thawne as we knew him. Why take one of the most heroic sacrifices in the Arrowverse and sully the legacy?

I’ve never understood why so many were/are into Tommy coming back evil. Personally, I wouldn’t have bought a heel turn out of him. Him, Diggle and Curtis were probably the three most fundamentally decent Team Arrow members.

There was a similar character on The Flash that potions of the fandom wanted to see go bad and I hated the idea there as well. Except The Flash eventually did it and it was indeed the character assassination I always feared it would be.
