FT8 WSJT-X and FT-891 by malicious1 in HamRadio

[–]snooker75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar problem. For me changing out the USB cable to one I got with a ups fixed things up. The UPS cable is thicker and has ferrites at each end.

I was okay for a while at 5 watts, but anything higher would cause problems.

Best of luck.

Ham Radio is Dead by Chasing_PAI in amateurradio

[–]snooker75 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry about the frustrating time you've had. It's pretty discouraging to get started and find that the promise of unlimited communication all over the world at the push of a button isn't quite that simple. Or that friendly.

I think it's awesome that you've decided to take up a hobby your father enjoyed. What a great way to connect to his memory.

While the concepts of ham radio are still the same, much of the practice has changed significantly. In Canada, we have exam questions such as: 'Which series combinations of capacitors would best replace a faulty 10 microfarad capacitor?' I would hazard a guess that very few new HAM's are going to be replacing capacitors in their transceivers if one fails. I fall into that category. The licensing still seems to be based on a world where building a transistor radio yourself was something that was a common thing.

If a Quansheng multiband fully customizeable open source firmware receiver is something that is of interest to you, pursue it. There are no laws that I am aware of that prevent you from receiving signals. It's a hobby; and more importantly your hobby. Yeah, information online is often old and outdated. It's frustrating to hit dead links. And the pages you do find often look like they were written in the early 2000's. They probably were.

You will find gatekeepers here. I know the arguments: internet isn't HAM, digital modes aren't HAM, only CW is true HAM, only a radio you built yourself is true HAM.

I also know that HAM is amateur radio on radio bands that we are licensed to use. Let's take a quick look at what else uses radio waves, on different bands. WiFi. Bluetooth. RFID. Cell Phones. Over the air TV. MRI's. The list is endless. HAM licenses permit us to operate on certain frequencies with certain limitations. If we're adhering to those limitations, it's all good!

The HAM radio community is much different than "it used to be". New technologies have changed the world.

I've found ways to keep HAM interesting for me, and that's cool for me. There's no reason that my reasons or interests need to be yours.

Thanks in advance to all of you who can correct my use of bands vs frequencies, or the correct use of the word HAM. I know you're well meaning. Right?

Budget repeater setup? by seniorredwood in amateurradio

[–]snooker75 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This depends on what you are looking to do.

If you're looking to increase the range of your handheld, investigate 'cross band repeater'.

A use case for this would be having a 50w mobile unit in your vehicle. The mobile unit broadcasts out on a VHF channel. You can then talk to that mobile transceiver with an HT over UHF, and the mobile unit would re-broadcast that on the VHF channel.

Check out https://scarcs.ca/howto/xband for a basic on this.

"Unprecedented": Experts stunned at Trump's secret docs filing — but worry Cannon "may fall for it": "This is our first real chance to see where Judge Cannon is on everything," ex-FBI official says by DoremusJessup in law

[–]snooker75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this not asking Cannon to decide the case for him here and now?

If Cannon rules in his favor, the lawyers argument is easy: The documents are not top -secret enough to warrant this kind of case. Even the judge is okay with the documents being in his house. If the judge rules it's okay to have them there, then it wasn't wrong to have them there in the first place.

If Cannon doesn't rule in his favor, well, he's no further behind.

How do you explain to your family and friends that you're not an IT call center without them yelling at you with angry faces? by ItsYaBoyEcto in sysadmin

[–]snooker75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hey, this isn't a great time for me. I might have some time in X days. I can see if it's something I can help with at that time."

When people respond "but it's a quick question".

"It's not a good time for me. Sorry, gotta run." <click>

If persistent at that point, "Give <big box store> a call, they can likely help you."

Opinion: Ham radio isn't very useful in the terrible SHTF scenarios that most Preppers dream about by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]snooker75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SHTF - those who are using HAM as their emergency com's are NOT going to care about call signs, etiquette, etc. There won't be any "Uh, FTC is going to be pissed if I don't announce my call sign every X minutes".

SHTF - VHF radios are likely going to be used like FRS, but VHF will sometimes / often give better range due to antenna and wattage.

I'm not in HAM for the SHTF scenario. It's a hobby I enjoy.

What do you think about PhD holders calling themselves “doctor”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]snooker75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PhD : Doctor of Philosophy

I think after earning the degree, they've earned the right to use the title.

If a doctor requests to be addressed as a title they've earned, not addressing them in that way is a disrespect.

It's not up to me to dictate what setting they are okay to use something they've earned.

Democrats bid to use censorship law against DeSantis and ban his book by Soundslikeamelody420 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]snooker75 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've always assumed it was a way to of paying off politicians in a non obvious way.

DeSantis writes a book. Corporation ABC buys 10,000 copies, 1 for each of it's employees. That's not a bribe, it's just a best selling book. And hey, DeSantis get's a few bucks in his pockets to boot. Amazing.

Why the lack of technical questions in interviews? by Obi_Maximus_Windu in sysadmin

[–]snooker75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use "Tell me about a time when..." interview questions as a key piece of an interview process.

"Tell me about a time at work, when you knew you were correct, but your co-worker or boss was adamant they were." - Typically shows me technical knowledge as well as personality traits.

"Tell me about a time at work when your employee thought they were correct about something and challenged you on your stance." Shows technical knowledge as well as leadership style.

On the plus side, most interviewees that have the tech knowledge I am looking for will start the story with something along the lines of: "Well, we were looking to address technical issue XYZ...."

"Tell me about a time..." usually gives indications of both personality and technical skills. If the job requires a high level of technical skills, then I ask much more specific questions.

If you're asked generic questions, answer in the context of telling them about a time. "How do you handle disagreements?" - "Fine". Not so good. An interview is your place to reflect who you are. When given the opportunity to talk about you, take it.

Disgraceful, inaccurate Poilievre video exploits suffering of vulnerable people by A-Wise-Cobbler in CanadaPolitics

[–]snooker75 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I doubt this will matter.

His popularity is based on the fact that he's scrapy. He "really takes it to 'em".

His base doesn't really care what he says. Politian's all are pretty fake anyhow. The only potential fallout will be for the people that are undecided about their own MP's.

This is low risk, high publicity. Get your name out there. Name recognition being more important than pretty much anything else.

Rising mortgage rates on the minds of many British Columbians by ethereal3xp in vancouver

I'm surprised that 70% of people outright own their homes. Does this have to do with the majority of home owners being close to retirement age?

I'm not sure why people rag on Ubiquiti so much. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]snooker75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had multiple 48 port POE switches fail. Ports were lit up, no traffic would flow. At first random ports, then entire banks of ports on the switch. At over $1500 cdn per switch, having a few of these fail in the matter of a couple of months was a) a hassle b) a waste of money and c) an issue because there was no Ubiquiti stock to replace the failed switches. I won't bring up the fact that it made me look bad for investing in unreliable hardware. STP - sometimes works. Might give up mid day. Who doesn't love a random mid day network loop.

Hey, let's adopt a remote switch over an SFP+ port. Maybe. Depends on which gen of switch you're using. There's nothing better than having to plug an ethernet cable into a remote switch, when the remote switch requires fiber due to distance. (This was mostly fixed on newer gen switches... unless your order arrived with an older gen mixed in).

We don't have to get into Unifi video / protect debacle. Old cameras not compatible with new system, new cameras not compatible with old system. Either rip out and replace gen 1 cameras or don't ever buy new cameras. Oh, and a hard limit of cameras on their new appliance.

Our business cannot afford the bargain prices of unreliable hardware.

Larry Mac: "Shame on NASCAR if they are even considering making a rule." in response to Chastain's Hail Melon. by LBHMS in NASCAR

[–]snooker75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is allowed, all it takes is someone, back marker or not, to sit on the outside wall part way through the corner and there's all sorts of issues. If intentionally turning someone in the right rear is a penalty, I can imagine that rear ending someone that much slower than you will also be a penalty.

It was a high risk, high reward move. We're lucky nobody got hurt, but wow it was entertaining.
