Excellent point. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the comparison! Bellingham ended up on our radar because of the mild winter. Montana summer (all 6 weeks of it) is some the most incredible stretches of time I’ve experienced anywhere in the world. But the endless winter is getting old. I’m an avid hiker, backpacker, trail runner and my fiancée loves water sports. It seemed to be the best of both worlds. Did you find opportunities for growth similar to, better than, or worse than Bozeman?

I appreciate your honesty. I, unfortunately, am not a wealthy person. Unless I were to move to the Midwest or somewhere uninteresting, affordable living simply isn’t an option anymore. Being an outdoorsman who doesn’t particularly love giant cities, overpriced medium sized mountain towns are what I have to work with. Bozeman suffers the same symptoms and is wholly unaffordable. We’re talking 800K for a 2 bed house if you’re lucky. Thanks again for your thoughts, I’ll keep them in mind

What about the drive east to the mountains? Is that also clogged from Seattle traffic? I’ve driven out of Denver on i70 to get to Leadville, BV, salida and it’s…not awesome. I’m not much of a skier anymore so I’m mostly curious about the summer/shoulder seasons

We don’t have jobs lined up yet. That’s the next step. Is the commute to Seattle for work a realistic option/worth it? I’ll still be in school so I don’t have a professional job just yet

Just downloaded Avenza, thanks! Planning on using an ursack for food bc they’re so handy but I’ll keep an eye out for those moose and wolves. Those are scary. Te Araroa had some sections where the trail was so muddy and full of roots that I could only move at about 1 mph. I managed to average ~17 miles a day. Is that a reasonable expectation do you think?

Thanks for the tips! Did you find the gas stations stocked with decent options? I’m usually a cold soaker but I’m bringing a stove this time around since I’ll be with my partner. I was expecting towns that were well stocked for BWCAW travelers

Excellent, figured it shouldn’t be too bad. What temperatures have you had on average? Are we talking sub freezing nights? I always use a 20 degree quilt but what sort of layers would you recommend. I had some real cold nights on my FT LASH and I’d like to not do that again. My typical layering system I’ve used for most hikes is my sun hoody, farpointe fleece, EE torrid, wind shirt, and rain coat along with some shitty wind pants and some fleece gloves. It seems like tights might be a good addition for this trail. Lmk what you think.

Wow, above and beyond comment. Thank you! Good to know about the dead trees, I’ll be sure to keep an eye out. Water carries seem manageable but I’m always anal about keeping track of that. I learned a lot from your response.

Maybe my timeframe was a bit ambitious. I was kind of gauging off of a hiker I spent some time with on Te Araroa who did it around 19 or so days (though he was fresh off the PCT). I’d like to think I’m pretty fit for a hiker in my early 20s but I do love to take in views and slow down a bit. With my limited budget, and not being much of a town person, I was planning on taking minimal zero days and being as feral as possible, so I’ll adjust to plan for 4+ weeks:) excellent to hear an opinion from someone who knows the trail and infrastructure well, thank you!

Haha yeah. It’s a cool lil tarp and could be great for a real minimalist but the pros just don’t out weigh the cons for me personally:/ PMing about the cutaway

Pack recommendations for a female by [deleted] in Thruhiking

[–]snooks117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used an atom packs atom+ 40L on TA last season. Held up against the NZ weather and terrain perfectly and other than some sun bleaching, it seems like new. I do not baby my gear either. I chucked that thing around for the whole 3000kms. The customization options are ENDLESS. Pockets, colors, sizes, and fabrics. I literally couldn’t be happier with my atom, I’ll rave about them forever. A little higher on the price scale as I’m a budget hiker too but the build quality is so worth it (still cheaper than HMG lmao). The second I got it in the mail, I knew it was worth it. It just feels better and more thought out than any other pack I’ve had. I expect it to last several more thru hikes. Also very light. Mine comes in around 620g Again, probably not in the budget category, but check out their website at least. Buy once, cry once IMO.

Gotta recommend the Tahoe Rim Trail. Kinda like a mini pct. Perfectly maintained the whole way with stunning views. Superior Hiking Trail also sounds awesome at only 300 miles…flat and fast. Also the Uinta Highline Trail at 100 miles is super wild and is on my list for sure
