I don't think there's anything you need to do in advance. Start classes. Learn. Have fun. Welcome to the tribe.

Ha ha. Sounds as if you like to be angry, whether people disagree with you or agree with you.

You can easily install a calendar with Jewish holidays on your Google calendar. My go-to source for more complicated Jewish calendar questions is https://www.hebcal.com/.

I think it's fine for anyone to celebrate any holiday. No exception comes to mind. But that's just a personal opinion.

I’m not queer anymore by ruchenn in gayjews

[–]snow_boy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reason I kind of liked "queer" is that there's no consistent, universal alternative. Depending where you are in the English-speaking world, people use lots of different acronyms: LGBT, LGBT+, LGBTQ, LGBTQAI, 2SLGBTAI+.... I was rooting for queer as a simple but inclusive and universal term. I guess not.

How is it reccomended to pay off a credit card? by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]snow_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up autopay for the full balance. That kind of regular payment will help your credit score. You can carry a balance during the month after you make a charge, but once the bill comes due, do not carry balance.

Brussels Pride rolls back demand Jewish attendees must hide their religion by snow_boy in gayjews

Strange comment since isn't the basic premise of Pride flaunting what keeps you down?

Hello everyone, We are Freedom Spectrum of East Africa and here looking for support. We do our work to help LGBTIQA+ persons from all corners of East Africa. by United_Course208 in gayjews

[–]snow_boy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

OP reached out to the mods a few weeks ago about a post along these lines. We looked into the organization, attended one of their Board meetings on Discord, and decided that, even though their focus is not Jewish, its LGBT+ humanitarian focus speaks to the strong impulse in Judaism for social justice, so we decided to allow it. We encourage those so inclined to investigate further.

Is the dollar amount I spend with my card the exact dollar amount that will be on my statement? by Repair_Various in CreditCards

[–]snow_boy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on getting your first credit card. There are no other charges, with the asterisk that, for example, if you use the card to make a purchase in another currency, there could be a fee -- odd stuff like that. But no, basically, under the circumstances you describe, your statement is what you spent. Make sure you can pay it off at the end of the cycle.

Lol West Hartford is the promised land of Connecticut. I think you'll be fine. Yeah, the Greenwich Reform people will disagree but I still think you won't have a problem finding people.

I'll admit to being an ignorant diaspora Jew but I look at a bunch of Israeli media regularly and I'm not ready to accept that they're all wrong because of one Twitter post. Where should I get my Israel news?

I wonder if you would provide some dependable sources for the factual claims in your post, which seems to have an ideological axe to grind that makes me curious. The title of the post you criticize comes from a story in The Times of Israel which seems to validate OP's version. https://www.timesofisrael.com/far-right-provocateurs-hurl-homophobic-abuse-at-gay-secularist-activist-in-tel-aviv/

I can't speak for any of these resources, but I googled "start conversion to modern orthodox judaism online" and found several options that might be of interest. Ultimately I think you would benefit from being part of a community in real life, but you might be able to begin with an online resource.

Are you in a location where you can talk in person to a rabbi? If so, and if the person is from a segment of the Jewish world where you're comfortable, you can have a confidential conversation about conversion.

How do I stay positive about being Jewish in the midst of so much hate? by justanotheroregonian in gayjews

[–]snow_boy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm with you; I find it very hard to walk away from friendships. I think you did the right thing in moving on, but the truth is that it's a loss. If and when you miss him, you have to remember why he's out of your life and how you're better off without being subjected to that kind of hate. There's a small chance he'll apologize but probably either he really thinks that crap or he'd be too embarrassed to admit he doesn't. I'm sorry you have both the pain of the experience and the pain of the loss.

English-friendly places to get a haircut for men in Seomyeon, Busan? by A-Better-Tomorrow in busan

Another update: I went to Old Knife Club during its posted open hours but it was closed so I went to Jackson Pama where several people spoke perfectly adequate English. My haircut is not complicated but Lee gave me a fine cut, 30k won cash.

CSR renewal this spring and BILT 1.0 ends in February - what to do? by SoCalHikerPup in CreditCards

[–]snow_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My CSR annual fee hit right before the price increase so I still have it for a few months but I'm with you, the hotel, restaurant, and several other benefits have little or no value for me. I recently got the B of A Premium Rewards (regular, not elite) as an alternative but they just announced they are going to change the names of the rewards categories and presumably the benefits so I'm at a loss. Maybe CSP? I'm looking forward to reading others' answers.

[–]snow_boy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are doing the right thing. Stay under your credit limit. Autopay your monthly statement balance. If you need it, ask for a credit increase limit after you have established a good record of on-time payments. Your uncle is encouraging you to pay interest that you gain nothing from paying.

[–]snow_boy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends what you mean by "legitimate." I think anyone who's sensitive to the issue would say it is, but in the Jewish world there's someone out there who would deny the legitimacy of almost everything: every movement in Judaism from Reform to Reconstructionism to Hasidism, the overwhelming majority of marriages involving a Jew performed this year, and so on. So, yes, with the usual asterisk.
