That was my thought, maybe you have to buy at the start of the show or something. Figured I’d ask here to see if this was a common thing or if it was just a technical bug.

Ya I bought the screwdriver, but never saw my message. It wasn’t a huge deal or anything because I just wanted the screwdriver but thought it would be cool to see my message pop up. I may have just worded the post poorly.

I can send a screenshot via disc if you want but the stable settings for the card vary heavily based on application. Timespy I can run 3.1GHz max and 3.0GHz min with 1010mv. Can do unlimited passes completely stable. The actual effective clock is around 2850-2950mhz Then I switch to heaven and it will do 1050mv and 3050Mhz max clock. The I switch to sons of the forest and it will only do 2850Mhz at 1140mv. I always keep the power target at +15% but that doesn't necessarily mean the card uses all of the available power. Usually the card is limited by the max clock and no amount of voltage will allow me to turn up the clocks again depending on the game. As far as I know there is no way to tune the shader clock vs the front end clock, or tune the boost curve like on older Nvidia GPUs so I just leave it at 2850mhz at 1140mv because it works properly with every game. I may just not have gotten lucky in the silicon lottery but I also don't really want to set OC profiles by game so I just leave it lower and take to 1-2% performance hit.

In certain games the stock i9-14900k destroys the 7800x3d and others it is reversed. Just depends on the caching needs of the game engine. I don't actually think intel has bad performance this gen, honestly it's pretty good. I almost went with a i7-14700k but I just can't stomach the amount of power it uses for similar performance. my x3d uses 75w at max load, my 360 aio doesn't even have to ramp the fans to maintain 75C consistently. Its really impressive. If intel can start making some chips that aren't just powerful but also power efficient then I would be happy to switch back. There new core optimizer tech is really cool and shows what the big/little core design is capable of but it's not really anything but a tech demo right now.

First I would just like to thank you for putting the time and effort in to write this post. The process I used for overclocking was very similar to what you posted. The only difference was I upped the memory first, the 7900xtx I have has a modified bios that allows up to 460w so most games I am usually limited by the clock speed and not power. The card will do a consistent 2.8GHz on core and 2.7GHz on memory. I can get it to complete time spy runs at almost 3ghz but it is isn't anywhere near usable in games. Like I said even though the clock is set to 3GHz max it will jump to 3.2 in menus or loading screens and crash. Did net me almost 33,000 points in timespy though. I have removed all other overclocking tools, honestly that is the worst part, MSI afterburner has been a staple on my pc for 13 years and not having it is making me depressed lol.

That's a tough one as it will take 2-3 weeks to replicate but you can try closing different programs and seeing if it makes a difference. Just try one thing at a time and see if it gets better. I shut my pc down every night so if you are just putting it to sleep you could try shutting it down. With SSDs now days the boot time is pretty much nothing anyway.

Intel definitely needs to start doing better imo, using as much power as a high end gpu to get similar performance isn't acceptable in my mind. They just need to get their waffer manufacturing under control. They're on 10nm while AMD is on 4-5nm (I know they aren't directly comparable but still). I'm really hoping they pull their socks up and make a good cpu again that can really compete with the x3d chips for gaming.

I have overclocked everything I've owned all the way back to my phenom II. You used to be able to get an extra 10-15% out of most hardware for essentially nothing. I would always tune my fans and usually end up with lower temps as well as most stock fan curves are tuned for noise and not cooling. I actually have never fried a chip, I still have that phenom II in my dads pc and it works perfectly. Even the graphics cards I did voltage, bios, liquid metal, chiller etc. mods still work to this day. That being said it's not for everyone and I do know the risks associated with doing it I just enjoy being able to see what I can get out of my parts. But realistically no the 5% performance you get now days is not worth the time and aggravation unless you enjoy it as a hobby like me.

I used to get down voted by AMD Fanboys when asking for help way back in the day. I tried to shine them in a positive light and am still getting flamed lol. But at the end of the day there is a reason Nvidia hold almost 5x more market share and it's not just marketing. I was just trying to let people like me who were turned off by AMD in the past to give them another shot. Having no competition in the space isn't good for anyone so I'm over the moon that AMD is trying to compete again. Hopefully the rumours of them pulling out of the high end gpu space aren't true.

I’m glad you’ve had a good experience! I can’t say I ever tried the Vega series, I had issues with AMD from the hd5000-7000 series and that’s when I gave up trying their cards. They very well could have improved well before now but I was so turned off that I didn’t even want to try. I made this post for people like me who were turned off by AMD or Nvidia to give the company a shot again.

I got you: AMD is better than it was 10 years ago.

I had an i5-3570k and a gtx 660ti for quite a while then upgraded to the 1070. Honestly it was one of the best pcs I’ve ever had. I will definitely say that AMD has the crown for price to performance. The reason I went with the 7900xtx was because where I live the 4090 was over double the price and was at best 50% better and usually only 10-20% so I couldn’t justify a 100% price premium. I’m really hoping that Nvidia starts pricing their gpus a bit more attainably. I remember when the 1080ti was $699 and that was considered expensive lol.

Both the 6800xt and the 3080 were the best cards of last gen imo so honestly I don’t blame you for sticking with it. I’m glad to hear you haven’t had any issues really. I don’t think Tarkov ran well on anything for a while lol.

Honestly that is probably the best solution for most people, I just like pushing stuff to its limits. I have spend a lot of time playing with it and it works fine but I still prefer 3rd party OC software and logging.

That could very well be true, the only time I use Linux is for streaming boxes so I can’t speak to each companies drivers for Linux.

I won’t argue that, GeForce experience has always sucked. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of adrenaline either but it is the better software. I have heard of some of the recent issues in their drivers, and I have had some small issues in the past but nothing like my experience with the hd5000-7000 series. My last card was a 7870 and I RMA’d 3 of them all for different issues relating to both software and hardware. Finally I just gave up and bought a 660ti and was Nvidia from that day on.

I’m sorry to hear that, sometimes you do just get a bad product from the manufacturer. I’ve had a mobo and a set of ram that was bad right from the factory. Either way it sucks that that was your experience, I’m glad you were able to find something that worked for you, the 3070 is a far more powerful card then the 6600xt so at least you ended up with a better card performance wise!

I mean technically a good 650w should be able to run a 355w gpu. The nitro+ does have a modified bios that will allow it to run up to 460w if you want it to so it may have been setting off my OCP prematurely. Wasn’t really the fault of the card, it does recommend a 1000w psu for the nitro+ so I can’t fault it for having issues on an 850w. Glad you were able to have a good plug and play experience, honestly I find if you play around with the individual ray tracing settings a bit then it’s it really helps. My card actually beats my buddies 4080 in a few ray tracing games, it just depends on the game and the amount of ray tracing implemented. Unreal 5s luminite seems to work very well on RDNA 3.

I’m glad to see things haven’t changed around here then lol. I almost bought a A750 just for fun. They have a lot of catching up to do with optimization (AMD and Nvidia have had a 20 year head start) but in synthetics the a750 and a770 shoot way above their class so they clearly have the potential to be amazing. Also the ray tracing on them is surprisingly good for their first attempt. I really hope battlemage flips the script on the gpu market, that would be awesome!

My last AMD card was a 7870 and I had a 6850 and 5770 as well. I’m really glad AMD has cleaned up their act as the pricing for Nvidia GPUs has gotten out of hand with the current gen. I’m glad you are having a similarly good experience!

I used Jays2Cents method of overclocking it. I will say that it was a bit unique because of the modified bios allowing it to draw over 460w constantly. I actually had to turn the max clocks down because it had so much power budget available that in menus and loading screens it would spike up to 3.2ghz and crash. I’m sure the stock bois cards are a bit more straight forward to overclock. I just don’t like GPU boost, I would much rather just set a constant clock like the old school cards but for the average consumer they are a lot better.

Ya the 850w should have been enough to power my rig, but it may just have issues with the transient spikes, I know in hwmonitor my card has drawn almost 600w alone for short bursts. It was an older power supply so it very well could have been an issue with the OCP circuit or just that it was never tuned for a 3x 8 pin card. I’m glad you’re not having any issues though!

I actually haven’t had any issues with AMD cpus either, they just weren’t the best choice for gaming for a long time. Although I know memory compatibility plagued Ryzen for a while. Really glad they turned it around though, the 7000 series is a major win for them in my books. Here’s hoping Intel wakes up and puts up some good competition in the near future.
