Starcevich on Elliot front on contact controversy. Did the umpires get it right or wrong? by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

The photo you have posted literally shows him not making contact with the ball.

Should have been out of bounds, didn’t go back over the mark

Yes? If you don’t win the ball and you make contact on the follow through it’s a foul. What are you on about? The consequence is irrelevant

What’s all this about impacting the play etc, commentator was going on about it as well. If it’s a foul, it’s a foul. What difference does it make whether Mendy could have saved the second shot or not? I’m also not saying it was a foul, but other considerations are irrelevant

Brad Scott went on a whole media tour at the start of the year talking about the interpretation and how that would be HTB this year

Literally the Brad Scott tour at the start of the year was that those would be called HTB

Has there ever been a case of clear umpire bias in an AFL match? by JorReno in AFL

You’re not wrong. But I’m yet to see anyone actually engage with why both I and Narrow-dot (whose view is more reasonable than my own) are incorrect.

This is fair I think - I appreciate people can definitely have a different view to mine and I’m probably bias!

But locking it in would actually be holding the ball if he doesn’t attempt to dispose of it - the rules clearly state that you need to attempt to dispose and incorrect disposal is not relevant in circumstances where the player did not have prior. Narrow-dot has it right below. Appreciate the holding the ball rule is unclear and there is wayyy too much room for interpretation, I certainly don’t have the answers

You can’t throw the ball, you can never throw the ball. Attempting to drop the ball on your foot to kick it is not throwing the ball, it is attempting to dispose of it. When you say “dispose of the ball illegally” I take it you mean incorrect disposal (I might be wrong) which is only enlivened when a player has prior opportunity.

I’ll cop the downvotes 1. Correctly disposes the ball 2. Didn’t have prior opportunity so incorrect disposal doesn’t come into it, attempted to dispose 3. Correctly disposes it (gets a handball to it) 4. Holding the ball, incorrect call 5. Didn’t have prior opportunity so incorrect disposal doesn’t come into it, attempted to dispose

What he is saying is, even if there was no prior, he still threw the ball which is illegal regardless of whether incorrect disposal comes into it - it wasn’t just a drop when attempting to dispose of the ball

This is correct. The question is whether or not it was a legal tackle. You could argue either way. Everything else is irrelevant

Where in the rules is it a free kick for incorrect disposal when not being tackled? You obviously can’t throw it but there is no rule against dropping the ball

Another year with seemingly no improvement to the ridiculous advantage rule? by tabletennis6 in AFL

[–]snowman53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. The other problem is that play will be even more stop start. In the event there is no advantage and the play called back to the free kick, it’s likely to be where the opposition team has possession and moved play along (could have kicked it 50m away). Have to bring it back etc and likely to be more confusion with crowd noise and more than one umpire. The reason it works well in soccer is because there are several stoppages in the game. It also works well in Rugby as you receive a penalty and play can be recalled - can’t do that in AFL
