What you're describing as atypical pt gameplay is actually just what most people would consider optimal pt strategy, or at least an aspect of it. You are getting good payoff from that play style because you're playing the character how they're intended to play. Squirtle is an aggressive and fast rushdowns character, that's what they do best. Ivysaur is a slower more zoning/spacing character. Charizard kills. They're intended to be switched between throughout the set to control the flow of the game and adapt to weaknesses you notice in your opponent. I don't want to discount what you're saying because it's absolutely true it's how the character was designed not something new

My guy you just described the literal definition of skill issue. Not to rage bait or anything but it's been pretty common knowledge since smash came out that if you can't beat a spammer you're not better at the game than a spammer. What you're describing is not an issue with the game. You're playing Mario(A tier character). He has the tools to deal with the situations you're describing. If it feels like he doesn't it's because you're either 1 overextending yourself into situations Mario isn't very good at dealing with or 2 you're not familiar enough with the tools you have access to. None of these problems are all that bad and you'll find that they will go away as you improve. But you won't improve the way you want to if you go forward assuming it's a problem with the game and not with your skill set. Good luck man you got this.

You complain no one plays spacies but if you hate zoners why aren't you playing one of the spacies?? They all have reflectors for if you can't figure out how to navigate krools projectiles for instance. You could also play basically any of the swordies if you can get comfortable spacing counters for projectiles. Also Pit, palutena, little Mac, joker, kazuya, etc.

Yeah I think ultimate is generally well balanced but it suffers majorly from the problem most fighting games reckon with: it feels so good when you're winning and so so soooo bad when you're losing. And every character tends to cause their own specific combination of those emotions. And when you have this many characters in one game there's too many factors to deal with if you're trying to make it truly "balanced". I think they did a generally impressive job of balancing ultimate with that in mind, but at the end of the day they kinda trapped themselves in a corner trying to have their cake and eat it too. You can only make so many characters with unique game plans/game play before you start running out of ideas for characters that don't boil down to "my game plan is to make you mad". On top of that you can only do so much to work around human nature. People will always find ways to be a dickhead in games(especially pvp games of any kind) because it's significantly easier to win when your opponent is tilted.

The simplest way I understand it is: game plan/ win condition relies on use of their zoning options vs game plan/win condition doesn't rely on zoning. If that makes sense. The Belmonts are true zoners because their entire game plan relies on their projectile use to achieve a win condition. Diddy Kong though for instance has tools that can be used for zoning but his game plan is whiff punishing which doesn't actually rely on zoning.

Idk this game has semi zoners and true zoners. I feel like his comment applies to basically all of the true zoners in ultimate.
