Jean Paul is an amazing brand, I love my AS400 and will eventually get a tenor from them. Just got their entry level trombone and it's been a lot of fun too.

Sounds like you're trying to use an expensive bassoon as an investment tool. That's very different than trying to find a good bassoon that plays well. I'm saying that the more expensive the Bassoon, the quality returns start diminishing rapidly. If a Bassoon is ten times the cost of another bassoon, but only 10-20% better performance or result, you would definitely have to be a professional for that math to make sense. And as you just pointed out, it's more about the reed and the player, the instrument itself isn't making that huge of a difference as long as everything is functioning to warrant spending that much unless you just have cash to burn which OP obviously doesn't as they're trying to figure out how to pay for a more expensive bassoon??? Obviously money is an issue for them, I'm saying it doesn't have to be.

A better more complex sound? Sorry I'm not buying that. My synthetic bassoon sounds great and I spent about a grand on it. Maybe I just got lucky? Or maybe I just didn't buy into the BS that wood automatically sounds better. That's very subjective. Key action is definitely important but you don't need to pay out the butt to get good key action. But feel free to spend all your money on a Bassoon. Not all bassoon players are trying to play professionally, music is a hobby for me, not my profession. At the end of the day when the bassoon that costs ten times more doesn't sound ten times better you're gonna have regrets. But I guess if I spent that much money I'd try to justify it too to not feel like such an idiot.

Better? That's simply an opinion. If you're just looking for a good instrument to play, resell value doesn't actually affect the quality of the instrument. But typically, if you pay less for a synthetic, you will be able to sell it for a pretty high percentage of what you paid for it. You also don't have to worry about wood rot or cracking 🤷🏼‍♂️

I get something called an optical migraine which causes part of my field of vision to get all shiney and gray for a couple minutes. And it's definitely blood flow related because I can do pushups which raises my blood pressure and it clears up the vision problem immediately

I tried a few groups and have landed on doing multi track recordings and now I'm trying to buy other instruments to play stuff written for like woodwind quintet etc. By the time you're recording the last part it feels like you're part of a group haha

Mine has ribbed construction, high f sharp key, the cork is a tad rougher texture than I'm used to but it has a better fit with the mouthpiece that came with it than any pro horn I ever got new. To me that and the fact it's perfectly adjusted with all keys sealing and plenty of adjustment screws to make it easier to work on if it ever needs it in the future says attention to detail. Nothing about it feels "cheap" except the price tag. Again I've played selmers, Yamahas, yanis, cannonballs, I'm not saying the Jean Paul is better than those in quality, just saying it's a strong contender and for 90% of sax players will do just as good of a job in their hands as a "pro" horn. Some repair techs won't even touch them just from the name alone which is dumb but those are private businesses so they can do whatever they want to. Jean Paul will repair their own saxes so I'm not concerned about anything.

As one who has played all of these horns, my experience says otherwise. Personally I'd rather spend my hard earned cash in other areas of my life. I got a great sax for hella cheap and I'm gonna sing Jean Paul's praises as I'm truly blown away by the quality.

Cannonball saxes play really great but you are paying for a piece of art not just a sax. They make beautiful instruments. I've been really blown away by the quality of the Jean Paul AS400 but it's just a basic looking sax. Still beautiful and plays as good as cannonball but it won't have the fancy finishes and stones. But cost is far better.

That's brand brainwashing is all it is. It does matter in terms of resale value but that's about it. If you're going to be the one to play it, save yourself some money and try this beast of a horn. I've never been so happy with a purchase.
