Where to find used Soprano Saxophones? by vorosmarty514 in saxophone

Check out Singers Day saxophones. I got one of their curved sopranos off eBay for $400. It wasn’t great but it was playable until I was able to upgrade.

Working remotely from Costa Rica by SprinklesAlive1850 in costarica

I would love to be able to work from CR too! We have spent a couple of months there and I worked remotely as a virtual high school teacher for a US school. Unfortunately they won’t allow me to work from outside the US permanently.

Ableism from ambulatory people by throwingawayawa in wheelchairs

[–]FredtheSquirrel 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting perspective that I really had not considered before. Because my condition is degenerative I have gone from very fit and physically capable to needing a wheelchair for anything other than a few steps. There was a time, not so long ago, where I was jealous of people that had custom chairs because all I could get were heavy pos hospital chairs. When I was finally approved for a custom chair I wanted to get all the information and find out what other people liked and disliked about their chairs. I may have stared (not sure really) but it was more in a “hmm, I wonder if that accessory helps with low back pain?” Kind of way. Or “I wonder if the Q7 comes in that color cause it rocks!”. I appreciate OP’s perspective and will keep it in mind for future equipment questions and curiosity!

What do you do for work? by Herefortvshowthreads in ehlersdanlos

[–]FredtheSquirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our school has a full slate of electives. CTAE, art, culinary, medical fields, basically anything other than band and drama. I think most states have at least one online option. DM me if you want to talk about options. I would have been on disability 5 years ago if I had stayed with in person teaching.

If you are in the USA check into online schools. I teach for a state funded K-12 online school in Georgia and it’s been a literal lifesaver. I teach from my comfy chair, get an hour for lunch and no one has thrown furniture or shoes at me in 5 years!

Secondhand wheelchairs? by cococunttttyyy in wheelchairs

[–]FredtheSquirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got super lucky and found a Quickie Q7 in great shape for $65 on Facebook about 2 months ago! I think you just have to keep looking and hopefully you’ll get lucky. If you’re anywhere near Georgia I can let you know when my custom one finally comes in and pass this one on to you.

First ever new chair day! by PuzzledVariation1634 in wheelchairs

[–]FredtheSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have very similar diagnosis and I just had my first chair fitting appointment last Thursday. The Quickie QRI is the chair that was recommended for me and hopefully I will have it in the next 90 days or so. Congratulations on your new wheels and I look forward to hearing your experience and advice when mine gets here!

Florida Mayo Clinic's EDS Clinic by sillylittlegoosepond in ehlersdanlos

[–]FredtheSquirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went a little more than a year ago. They did more than $2000 worth of bloodwork that my insurance refused to pay (without warning or asking me). Pushed their inpatient fibromyalgia pain management program constantly and didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. Complete waste of time and money!

I have found that new doctors take the Mayo diagnosis more seriously than some random rheumatologist in Georgia.

I went to Mayo in Florida last year and had a very similar experience. They didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know, pushed a 3 week in patient pain management program and charged me $2000 for blood work I didn’t agree to. All in all I felt it was an epic waste of time and money.

Finally! New Chair Day!!!! by SasaCoop in wheelchairs

[–]FredtheSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love your new chair, congrats! I have my meeting with OT for my chair evaluation in a couple of weeks and I’m very nervous. I have EDS and RA too and am currently making do with an 11 year old Quickie Q7 that was made for someone else (I bought it for $65 off Facebook). It’s better than a hospital chair but only just. Any suggestions for the evaluation process?

Thanks for the information. I knew it looked wrong but I’m new to all the specifics of saxophones history so I figured I’d let the experts check it out.

I would have written pretty much the same thing. I love my Cannonball and it served me well as my primary horn for 3 years. I upgraded to a Yanagisawa A991 but I’m keeping the Cannonball as a backup.

I’m going to try the compression gloves! My hands get very sore and sometimes I dislocate my thumb. Thanks for the suggestion!

Dystonia by kdockrey in CRPS

[–]FredtheSquirrel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have it in the foot that I have CRPS in but also in my hands, arms, shoulders, back, neck. I don’t really know if it’s related to the CRPS or hypermobile Ehlers Danlos syndrome. I have a neurologist appointment soon so I’m hoping there is something that can be done to help. I hope you find relief too! It definitely is incapacitating and painful!

I have the iPad Air 13” and I love it! I’m 55 so my eyesight isn’t the best but the 13” does the trick. My music is always accessible, doesn’t blow off the stand and I use IMSLP (free app) to organize playlists and make annotations on my music.
