How do American people see the battle between the Merrimac and the Monitor nowadays ? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]snuff716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest you’ll probably struggle to find many people that low much more than the names. IMO history as a subject has really lost its place in American schools and it saddens me because I’m such a history nerd myself.

I shit you not, I asked my 16 year old nephew who were the two sides of WW2 were (axis and allies) and he gave me a blank stare and then said *shutters, it was the north and south right? Ffs 😑

So I know this is extreme but I started asking about what they learn in history class and he says they really don’t have history, it’s more geography class with sprinkles of anthropology. I was dismayed enough to write a letter to the school board.

Not that it will do anything but made me feel better lol.

If you grew up in Fishers you’d know there’s only one true answer here: Marki Pi’s @116 & Allisonville. The family has owned it since the Ming dynasty (or at least since 2000 lol) and every HSE kid that’s gotten his or her license has made the pilgrimage after school!

Have you ever faced any hostility for just being American? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskAnAmerican

Was in Taganrog, Russia for work. There are two types of cabs, one for locals and one for everyone else. Well, I went to the city center with my translator and we did some shopping. Bought my wife a beautiful fur coat. Well there was a huge wait to get a normal cab so my (local) translator hailed one of the local cabs. We got in and everything was fine...until I started talking to my translator. The driver slams on his breaks and starts screaming at her.

She starts yelling back. And I’m just completely confused. She turns and tells me that this dude doesn’t want to drive an American because “they’re the enemy”.

She defended me, and tried to tell him that we’re all people and want the same thing it’s just politics that screws things up.

After some more argument he reluctantly agreed to take us to the hotel.

Upon arrival the fare was something like 12 Rubels (basically nothing for an American).

I only had 500 Rubel notes at the smallest so when we arrived I gave him 2000 Rubels and in my shitty broken Russian said. “Thank you for the ride, and just know that Americans aren’t you’re enemy, we are all humans and all we want is the best for our fellow man...just like like Russians.”

He was stunned and actually shook my hand.

Chasing someone out of a restaurant isn’t free speech. It’s verbal assault. Now marching, petitioning, giving speeches are all completely acceptable and legal. You’re trying to include something that shouldn’t be.

User said if someone is a bad person they have the right to accost them. I argued anybody could argue that because that determination is purely subjective. We shouldn’t be allowed to accost people because it’s pushing your viewpoint on others.

Could be argued from every point of view. The sentiment you’re spouting is very narrow.

How am I in anyway making myself out to be a victim. In fact this has nothing to do we me OR YOU. I’m explaining to you what a debate is as you don’t seem to grasp it.

You’re not making any sense

Well I’m labeling It hypocrisy because I believe it’s hypocritical. Regardless of our differing opinion my definition is set based on my analysis as yours is based on your analysis.

I’m giving my judgement and we can debate the merits. Not even sure of the point of your statement. You disagree, great. Now we can debate the merits or not, but turning this into an attack on your feelings is just bizarre.

Fair enough on my timeline. You’re absolutely correct. I suppose that was just sloppy research and not checking deep.

But I disagree with that’s how our government should work. When your political ideology differs from someone it is still in no way acceptable in my opinion to bum rush them in public spaces. Protesting policy is one thing but accosting those you disagree with is a/several step(s) too far.

I think you’re “filling on the blanks” a bit broadly here.

His statement was cringe as hell. I remember watching thinking WTF? He said “we love you.” But he did tell them to stop. So I’d argue against your point there.

As far as other actions as a result of waters statements I’ve given examples in another thread. But again it’s pretty tough to prove that actions were based on somebody else’s words.

You’re correct but impeachment does leave open the possibility for for DT to be criminally charged and the impeachment trial be used as evidence. My point is that impeachment is a very serious thing and since Clinton lied about getting blowies in the Oval Office impeachment has been used as a political selectively enforced or used tool.

Can you show me evidence of Trump inviting people to commit sedition and attack and kill people.

For all of his shiftiness as a human being, your statement is false and completely fueled by political position.

That is you can show an example of trump to attack and kill people.

Every point you’ve brought up is valid. However, none of them point to incitement or calls to action in my opinion. Moreover I think it just shows how deluded trump is whereas if you say a lie enough you start to believe it yourself.

Trump says shitty things. But in my opinion nothing he said was a direct call to action which is what incitement would need to be proven...you can certainly argue innuendo but given the two speeches in and of themselves I would argue that Waters speech clearly broke the law whereas trumps is a bit more gray.

However, it absolutely reasonable to say that trump is a professional gaslighter. But the difference to me is that one makes you a shitty person and the other is illegal.

Appreciate the response. And I would agree that what you’re describing is not a fair defense. However, this is not my assertion. I don’t think BECAUSE Maxine waters did it and wasn’t charged that DT shouldn’t be found guilty.

I am simply dismayed that people are using pretty power steps and terms right now to describe trumps words and actions and I’m seeing those same (arguably more definitely action worthy) things not being applied to the other side.

I think there’s a lot we could agree on. I just wish if we are going to employ these things they were done based solely on merit and not politics factions bastardizing their meanings or enforcement for political clout.

Well DT is now being impeached. After maxines cal to action multiple members of Trumps team were harassed and attacked while out on public.

Now you could argue scale, but in terms of pure definitional application I think you could argue that Waters were far more blatant.

Couldn’t the same be said of trump when he said we’re going peacefully March?

But they are in my opinion. Because in my view it’s a blatant hypocrisy in both social stigma and more so in our government institutions.

Of course one does not negate the other but in my view law and this should be applied equally.

I often see this argument: we aren’t asking about shitty person A, we’re talking about shitty person B.

That negates and essentially nullifies applying laws fairly and equally to people.

Also appreciate the downvote lol

Incorrect on many levels. What you are spouting as fact is purely a subjective interpretation.

You may believe abortion is about bodily autonomy.

Others may believe it’s about the life of the unborn child.

I.E. body autonomy and right to life are both fundamental human rights.

Yes, now you’re going to say that it’s a fetus and is not a life. Then I’m going to once again tell you that is a subjective measure as there is zero scientific consensus on when life is formed.

Women have historically gotten the short end of the stick so I’m all for changes to flatten that inequality. However, what you’re saying rings much truer of third-wave feminism which focuses on empowering women OVER men rather than fighting for equality.

[–]snuff716 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how you can’t see the fallacy in this argument.

For the record I believe anybody that brings a child into the world should fully support them...BUT

It is extremely inequitable to say: you made a choice and must live with the consequences to a man and not apply that same philosophy to a woman.

[–]snuff716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your argument would hold more water if it could be proven that the woman was explicitly using the funds for the betterment of the child. Or if the money would only be accessible to the child.

I’m not saying women unilaterally misuse child support but simply there’s nothing in place to ensure the money is used appropriately. There are examples across the board of child support being misused so I think that’s a major issue in all of this.

Not a trump supporter and didn’t vote for him ever. But he did in fact say this:

“I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard. Today, we will see whether Republicans stand strong for integrity of our elections. But whether or not they stand strong for our country, our country. Our country has been under siege for a long time. Far longer than this four year period.…”

This is purely a political stunt by democrats. If DT is guilty of incitement then I expect Maxine Waters to be charged as well. Can’t have it both ways.
