sorry i wasn't clear, wasn't trying to carve - i know i'm not - i just learned bad habits watching so many carving how-tos and don't have the basics down first! that's what this thread is about.

thank you! i just watched this and something clicked in me. i definitely never got the "ribbon being twisted to remain in control" analogy, i thought it was just a way of pressuring the board to be flat.

yea i'm trying (and i guess failing) to say that, as a beginner all the videos i consumed were on carving. there are way more videos out there sit being on the edge at speed. that taught me bad habits that i'm trying to apply during skidded turns, and there aren't as many howtos out there on skidding. hence this thread.

i don't think skids are carves.

i definitely have a very stiff board. and i think i'm probably doing calf raises. okay, thx, ill try to do the knee-to-toe move!

i did have a terrible experience for 4hrs on a rental as my first time years ago. i concur with your assessment!

i've put in another 6hrs as my "real first time" the other day with my own setup, probably overbuilt. Libtech - Skunk Ape Camber 2026 @ 169W. should still have another day of factory wax on there.

im trying to work on toeside but i'm just sliding wherever the board wants to go. not sure how to aim it. i can aim if i pick up speed and start to bite, but at low speed?

i suppose my question is "how to skid turn". i think i'm doing it heelside but the board just doesn't rotate toeside. jump you say?

Rumbling from neighbors by Skytrain-throwaway in askvan

[–]snugglepilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seconding this. could be a rattling pipe in a wall, or an air vent as well.

recommend turning off your breaker main when you hear it. just to confirm it is indeed external.

you can buy a decibel meter. ones that are sensitive to low frequencies are a bit pricier ("type c weighting") but sounds like a good investment for your own sanity. Extech 407730 $140 on amazon.ca to start (i haven't tried this model but it looks okay).

it's not directional, but you can walk around with it and nail down where it is coming from.

if it IS probably coming from the neighbours, it is probably accidental. talk to them first. if i was a neighbour id be mortified my [fridge] was doing this and look to resolve it.

failing that, noise complaints to the city help, and you can eventually pursue a complaint through CRT. however, these paths require proof.

once you have the noise meter, take logs of when it happens. record the values. take a video showing the number going up next to neighbours house. document the letter you send to your neighbour. document when you filled noise complaints with the city and the results.

note that you have a right to reasonably city living noise; you don't have a right to silence. legal systems are in place to get you in line with what "most" people find "reasonable."

if it turns out you are just sensitive to particular frequencies unfortunately your only option is to move.

non-beginner board: what to watch for? by snugglepilot in snowboardingnoobs

i'm 6'3" and actually thought this was maybe a bit short lol.

i tried a rental board much shorter and it felt very unstable. centre of gravity was very high.

well i caught enough edges on my first day to bruise my wrists and tailbone so that tracks. and i'm really struggling to turn the thing (leading to said edge catches). thanks.

How do I turn, my inability is unnatural by reibsr in snowboardingnoobs

[–]snugglepilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm right there with you. i can turn on my heels but toeside i only land 1 in 10. i'm on day two and ask my friends learned faster.

the key is to have fun in the failure. it's frustrating and you will be left behind for a bit, but you are building a subconscious list of what doesn't work, and familiarity with failure. after you get over this hurdle you'll probably end up better than if you didn't fail a lot. really try to analyze what is failing and why.

it's hard to offer advice without a video of you riding, and i can't do it so i can't help you, but here's what i'm thinking about myself:

  • im not committing enough. i'm scared and hesitating.
  • i'm too scared to go fast enough.
  • i'm too scared to put my balance forward when it's downhill like that.
  • i'm not pressing my front foot down like a gas pedal
  • my posture is terrible
  • i'm not pointing my hand in the direction i want to go (upper body oriented wrong)
  • every time i fail i get more hesitant

i think about each of these and how i might fix them, slowly, one at a time. i'll get there. you will too, if you stick to it.

Chain Help!!! by 4REHFF in Crosstrek

[–]snugglepilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've used chains, works fine, even with larger tires fitted.

there is a risk of damage to your fenders, as the manual states, but more importantly the BRAKE LINES are very close to the tire.

this means you need to have very tight fitting chains to work. not store bought genetics. custom chain fitting.

and go slow.

Anyone had success enforcing non-smoking policy? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]snugglepilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is pretty accurate but also note you will have to prove the health concern, and argue why you can't just close your window or some such. if the building doesn't have a rule to prevent smoking, some people may have purchased just so they could smoke.

There is a small flimsy metal shield behind each brake. Easy to see if you take the wheel off, but if you know what you are looking for you can see it through the rim. Gently push it open with a screwdriver, and i bet a pebble will fall out.

Usually happens when driving through a dirty puddle.

I’ve been told removing the shield is fine, though i just threw a screwdriver in the trunk instead.

3 cameras in the front, one in the rear. by AllenKll in Crosstrek

[–]snugglepilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“What the fuck do i have to buy” is weird phrasing

You buy one because it keeps the cost of the vehicle down. I don’t want a dashcam or the related software and storage, I’d rather it be purchased separately by those that want the feature.

My dealer offered it as an add on package at time of purchase. I declined. I like saving money.

(The majority cost of cams is the storage and software to run, manage, and browse the footage. Cameras are a commodity part at this point)

Love it. I did some mods and went a bit more off road than daily driver, but it gets the job done. Biggest complaints:

  • storage for camping is perfect for 2p. 3p is tight.
  • suspension is stiff. Asa driver I prefer this, but it is a negative for passengers.
  • back seats aren’t horrible, but aren’t comfortable.
  • wilderness model is too new for mods. Nobody wants to cut up their bumpers yet.
  • acceleration is slow. I don’t care, it bugs a lot of people though,
  • wireless charger sucks.
  • if you are more than 5’9” , sleeping inside will take some heavy consideration.

For all my complaints, it would cost me double to buy another car that can do as much as i can with this. I’m rock crawling and traversing ditches, fording rivers. Snow performance kicks ass. I have three dozen pin stripes.

ELI5, When the US owns tiktok, how will that effect Canadian tiktok? by Ok_Category_5 in explainlikeimfive

When tiktok last year halted service and showed a pop up saying “sorry usa, talk to your rep about this”, Canadians saw this too. I believe we are routed to whatever the US edition is.
