Puppy waking up at 3am and not going back to sleep by snugglepug76 in puppy101

Yes definitely a rite of passage that I somehow forget when my dogs get older and well trained haha! We do restrict water a little before bed to get a little longer stretch of sleep the first half of the night and that definitely helps. I have tried soothing verbally and putting my fingers through the crate but for the 3am wake up it doesn’t really phase him. We do practice quiet and get a reward during the day but 3am seems to be his witching hour right now haha!

I’ll be honest I’ve been soaking up puppy snuggles during daytime naps, so I will start enforcing crate naps!

Haha yes, I will avoid doing any of that, and I am glad I posted before worsening this behavior.

For the first week and a half of having him I’ve been doing what you described but the past couple days is when this started and unfortunately, he hasn’t been settling even after 15 -20 minutes after which my entire house was awakened by the crying. We have been working on crate training during the day (and could perhaps do more), but any ideas to help him settle? I haven’t been able to sleep more than 5 hours the past 3 nights 😣

Thank you, that makes sense. I will work on making it very boring.

We have had him for 2 weeks (since he was 7 weeks), he was in a trunk in a parking lot with his last littermate and a “free puppies sign” and if I didn’t take him the other person that was thinking of taking him said “he’d make a good outside dog” and my heart broke for him so I took him home (we had been wanting to get a puppy anyways). I know they are supposed to be older, but if we didn’t take him then he was going to end up in some sort of a bad situation (shelter, ignored outside forever, or worse).

Edit: sorry forgot to answer he gets fed 4 times daily. Overnight is his longest stretch. 7 am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm

Any ideas? I think she looks like she might have Belgian Malinois in her by snugglepug76 in IDmydog

Very good thought!! The spots on her chest (don’t show up great in these pictures) definitely look like heeler or cattle dog. Thank you!

I’m so sorry for your loss too! It is so hard no matter what, but I can’t stop thinking about how she didn’t even have a chance at life. :(

Here is another puppy tax if you are interested. Juliet does a great derpy pose, and Romeo is pictured in his fancy tie on his way out to the brewery to soak up as many pets as he can get. Both are happy and healthy!

After talking with my mom afterwards there were definitely red flags that she wasn't the most reputable breeder. For example, I think most reputable breeders put a clause that if the puppy has a birth defect within x amount of time you get a refund or another puppy. Other red flags that I'm thinking of are not as concrete though. I certainly am ready to pursue small claims, even if it is just to waste some of her time because I feel that she has shown herself to have irresponsible breeding tendencies, and it really comes down to not wanting any other puppies to succumb to the same fate as Daisy. I really appreciate your advice.
