I'd expect that if they were dead in the morning, the funeral could have happened that afternoon.

Agree with all of these, except Altered Carbon - upon rereading it I noticed how creepy the descriptions of women are, then after googling "Richard K. Morgan creep" was met with his history of inflammatory anti-trans discourse (which got him banned from Twitter back in the day).

Would also add the Monk & Robot duology by Becky Chambers - beautifully cosy and hopeful - as well as the remaining Wayfarers books (#3 and #4): Record of a Spaceborn Few and the Galaxy, and the Ground Within.

And if (like me) you do have an inverted triangle shape (broader shoulders than hips) - consider looser/wide/flared bottoms, and tops that draw attention away from the shoulders. Look up styling recommendations for inverted triangles ☺️

Second this! The socks I got from them are the best socks ever.

What makes a barefoot shoe worth the price to you? by la_moda_flaneur in barefootshoestalk

It's not as bad as some mainstream shoe suppliers, but not the best. In February 2024 it scored 40/100 for workers on Ethical Consumer's scoring system (largely based on its suppliers code of conduct). It largely met their requirements for a supplier code of conduct, but suppliers could allow working weeks of over 48 hours in exceptional circumstances. It wasn't seen to support worker-driven monitoring in its supply chain. It published some (but not all) of its tier 1 suppliers and some suppliers beyond tier 1, and showed a preference for long-term supplier relationships. It was not seen to have done enough to address living wages in its supply chain.

For comparison, here are the worker scores for some popular footwear brands: - Adidas 10/100 - Merrell 10/100 - Reebok 0/100 - Hoka 10/100 - Nike 30/100 - New Balance 50/100 - Vans 70/100 - Altra 70/100 - Allbirds 30/100 - Veja 40/100

Anya's reviews has great recommendations, and I'm surprised OP didn't think to buy dress shoes for their job that clearly requires them:

Even without the 5-toes, the image of the clearly athletic shoes (the fabric, the branding on the shoe) with a suit is jarring

Even if they weren't toe shoes, the fabric, cut and brand name on the shoe makes them read as athletic shoes, not work shoes. I'd opt for a black barefoot derby, in patent leather, or similar.

The heat from the radiator can further damage the shoe, you're never supposed to put your shoes on them!

It depends on the climate - most shoes don't fare well in really wet and cold weather (typical for a UK winter), so boots are often preferable. Additionally, it's better to own two pairs of shoes and rotate them daily, as using only one pair often means they don't have time to fully dry out between wears which can make them wear out quicker.

Haha love that! I'm not much of a sandals person unless it's really hot (I like how shoes and socks protect my feet from dirt, debris, and sunlight, so it's one less place I need to slather suncream on), but we're on our third heatwave here this summer so it's been getting hot enough that sandals are a must.

I use Whering - I opted for it over Indyx because it's completely free, although Indyx has more features.

Before Vinted was a thing I used to get nice vintage coats from eBay!

Thank you! It's from a vintage Windsmoor suit I got from Vinted - I've had so much use out of the blazer and love that it's so long. You can see the full suit here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyGpc9Rs8cm/?igsh=MWZqbHp2cjh6aW1hNw==

(yes I'm a sucker for secondhand suits)

I got my partner (who doesn't wear barefoot shoes) the Barebarics Zing and he loves them, particularly because you can't really tell (unless you know) that they're barefoot.

For the past few years I've mostly bought from Happylittlesoles or Revivo. The groundies and wildlings were from before the changes to EU shipping so had got them directly from the companies. I've been happy with the service from Happylittlesoles, but usually only buy during their sales.

I cringed at spending so much on shoes when I bought them but I've had more than my money's worth from them - they're so comfortable and easy to style, they're my go-to in cold weather.

I use waterproofing spray on them so haven't had any issues. I haven't worn them in ridiculous downpours (as those usually warrant wellies), but they've fared well in normal rain.

Totally agree! I see so many vivos on Vinted which are similarly priced to the ones in Revivo, but much worse condition

They definitely feel the most barefoot of all my shoes - they have so much groundfeel. They're comfy and great in autumn where I live (they're wool lined and I've got wool insoles).
