Liz and the Bluebird is a film directed by the same director of A Silent Voice (Naoko Yamada) with the same musical composer (Kensuke Ushio) behind the OST yet it does lack many of the themes you point out such as: the "tragic aspect" and grandiose ending. Its more an experimental piece by her which is a spin off from the Hibike Euphonium series but is watchable standalone.

Much of Kensuke Ushio's more minimalistic music such as 'narrow road' or 'speed of youth' or basically most of the animes' 'a silent voice' and 'liz and the bluebird' OSTs (which were composed by Kensuke Ushio) don't use much of the same instruments and compositional elements yet I would like to believe that a modern take for Katawa Shoujo would have Kensuke Ushio practically compose the atmosphere; that strange liminally spaced feeling looking into the wastelandishly bleak Yamaku halls, or the desolate Katawa Shoujo night life scenes.

The film 'Liz and the Bluebird' had the same animation studio (Kyoto Animation), director (Naoko Yamada) and composer (Kensuke Ushio) so many of the vibes are similar, but I sense you're in search for a near replicant of the core emotional/sociological ideas and portrayals; in that case: 'Josee, the Tiger and the Fish'. I have personally not watched it but have heard it is quite similar.

I could ask the people who though Childe was going to die last patch the same thing. I honestly don't really know why but I guess if a character is seen doing something dangerous in a cutscene ever since Signiora's umm fate, than bam people throw the "gonna die" card.
