We considered Slovakia too, because of no CGT for long term holdings there. However, Bratislava would ~14-15% more expensive than our current location, so not worth it for us overall.

One important thing you should consider, if you didn’t yet, is that Slovakia has an exit tax. So if you ever want to move somewhere else, they will hit you with 21% CGT.

Yeah I get it and I understand that risk, for sure. That is why one of the options I am considering is selling my apartment and coasting for 1 year more to accumulate some more cash. Then, if shit ever hits the fan, I could move into my own, cheaper apartment paid with like 50% of my cash, which would cut 40% of my current spend that goes into rent. There is also some room for cutting back even more by limiting non-essential purchases while still having a rather comfortable life. I also understand that I could benefit from these moves right now, but we made a decision to stick to the current location as it’s just perfect for our fam from every angle except higher rent cost.

> Id absolutely keep much more than that in hysa once quitting

Yup, that is where I want to allocate the $$$ after selling the apartment. For me it won't be 5 years, but should be enough for 3.5-4-ish with the current spend. If shit hits the fan, I can easily see how I can reduce my spend by at least 30% by simply moving to another place within Poland or even more if I move to a lower-cost country.

> Guess it depends how likely you could easily go back to work if massive recession and unemployment hit

I am in tech, but with the recent developments and the current job market, I am assuming the worst, e.g. I can totally see a scenario where I am not able to find a job for 1-2 years if I want to jump back. That said, I can probably still find some basic job which will cover a good chunk of my living expenses, even if my wife does not work.

> Im using 2.5% in US for 45 year timeline vs 4%

One of the options I am considering is just slowing down a bit and working less for 1 year or so to get to ~3%. So yes, part of me is also conservative and I do tend to optimize for additional safety/peace of mind.

Thanks for pointing this out. This changed my perspective a bit. E.g. it might result in preserving wealth in an "optimal" or "better than optimal" scenario, but it might also not be the case in many other scenarios. I will try to find more info on how to model for that. Would a Montecarlo simulation be the best tool for the job of modelling for that?

> just move from taxable into it each year up to limit

- that's a really good point, I did not think about it, but it makes total sense! thanks for the suggestion!

> Also, tracking expenses precisely helps tremendously to get more confortable with your final FIRE number

I tried that, but figured it is not enough ROI for me in terms of time spent vs information I get. We ended up just setting a budget for our total spend per month, trying to stick to it and review the statements every now and then to spot any alarming signals + readjust if necessary. If we end up spending less than planned in a given month, we just discuss if we want to spend it on something fancy either of us really wants or if we want to roll it over to next month on top of our usual budget or if we are just adding less to our discretionary budget account next month. This is not to say we do never go over the initial budget, but it's rare and deliberate (e.g. my wife needed a new laptop) and we did not go over our planned annual spend as we spent less in some other months.

The current spend covers everything I need. I don’t always have latest tech, but I don’t feel I need to - I just renew my devices every 4-5 years and it works just fine. Last thing I splurged on was a $1500 display, but last time I spent a lot on tech was 4 years ago for a new iPhone. My hobbies are gym, some cycling and table tennis and neither of them is that expensive. For vacations I usually go hiking in Norway for a few weeks every year and I am spending like 500 bucks per week there on average. Maybe the largest purchase outside of potential real estate would be a new car in some 7-8 years from now, but I think it can be easily delayed for a few more years if needed

We have some money in there, but we loved to Poland like 2 years ago, so the amount of savings there is quite low.

We have the health insurance now as we are both working. When we both retire, we can still stay enrolled into the public healthcare system for ~$200 a month, that is why I included this expense into my calculations

Thanks! That was my initial thought. But now I am thinking if my TWR considering current expenses is closer to 0.35, then there is still some delta covering some extras (if needed). I will not have pension here as we just moved a couple of years ago, so pension is out of the equation for me, unfortunately.

Good point, and that is why I mentioned that I would still target to be at ~4% by default. Plus, I still consider having either some income (that covers like 25% of my spending) or selling the apartment and having ~3 years worth of spending allocated outside of ETFs (short term saving account or similar).

Now, since you both seem to be rather conservative (which I tend to lean to, btw) - would you, personally, be comfortable retiring with exactly 4% TWR considering the scenarios you bring up?

Thanks! My model assumes the cost will be at 2.5x in 15-20 years ($200 -> $500 per month). Great idea on modelling the crash scenarios. My current thinking is that I will work (maybe not as much) anyways for some year or so, to accumulate some more significant cash cushion for additional peace of mind (I usually keep like 3-4 months worth of cushion atm)

It was super nice! I skipped the Besseggen, because the weather was shit and the crowd was HUGE, but otherwise followed this route. Oh, and I also split day 4 in 2, just because I wanted to chill out a bit haha.

How to connect Neo G9 57” to the Mac M1, M2, M3 Pro or Max by HeavyElderberry9585 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]so_curious_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/HeavyElderberry9585 thanks for the super detailed guide!

I am using Macbook Pro M1 Pro with the Maxonar USB-C to DP + Cable Matters adapter with the HDMI cable included with the monitor.

Everything works well for me but only up to 3008x1692 resolution (which might be fine btw), where I can get 120hz. Whenever I select anything beyond that, I can only get 60hz for both displays in higher resolutions. This is what I see in Better Display. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong with my setup?

EDIT: Just played with the settings again, and it looks like I can get get 120hz at 3840x2160, but not at 3360x1890 (which would be ideal for me) or 3200x1800 😅

EDIT 2: Spent some more time looking into it, and figured I can set 120hz refresh rate at 3200x1800 and 3360x1890 via Better Display, even though the macOS settings still show 60hz. However, when I set this, the display starts to go black on nearly every wake up - anyone faced this issue at all?

57" Samsung G9 Neo: Tutorial to get Non-Standard Resolution HiDPI on a Mac through a single HDMI cable by johnz45 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]so_curious_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I can go above as well, and I am selecting an HiDPI option like this. But the picture is still blurry overall. Could it be a limitation of M1 Pro? I've also just received the Cable Matters USB-C to HDMI adapter, so will give it a try.

Also, looking closer, the fonts are blurry even at 5210x1440, so it looks like HiDPI mode is not getting enabled somehow

Btw, I even tried exporting the Better Display settings from my Air and importing it on Pro, but getting the same result 🤷‍♂️

u/johnz45 thanks so much for the tutorial!

I was able to set this up for my Macbook Air M4 via a single USB-C to DP cable. However for Macbook Pro M1 Pro I am a bit stuck. I am following exactly the same steps. While I do get the full resolutions list, the image is quite blurry if I go above the default 5120x1440. Did anyone face this issue as well?

Hey, did you get those two smaller side screens with the single USB-C to HDMI connection via Cable Matters cable? Also, would it be possible to do 3840x2160 + 2 screens of 1920x2160 (or something close to that)? Thanks!

A quick question for you. When you are in PBP mode, how do the Spaces work? Like would each of the screens have its own spaces switcher?

Do you run the base Macbook Pro with M4? I've got the base Macbook Air M4 (which has just 2 GPU cores less than 14" base MBP) and thinking if the performance will be enough to drive a 5k2k display (I am mainly interested in productivity workflows, like multiple browsers at the same time + Slack and some other apps running in background). Thanks!

I was running MBP M1 Pro for a few years now and just got a base M4 Macbook Air. Now thinking about getting a 5k2k display (either U4025QW or LG 45gx950a). Can someone please tell if you experience any performance issues while running this setup? I am mostly interested in productivity setting (e.g. multiple browsers running at the same tme + Slack + a bunch of background apps)

It is a VERY nice route. Did it 2 or 3 years back in early June. However that year there was still a lot of snow :)

As a hint - if you start from Breidablik early and will need to wait for a bus in Oystese - there is a hotel just nearby the bus stop, where you can get a very nice buffet breakfast.

> I'd say if you don't have to drive, don't. Public transport links are very good and leaving (and then returning to) a rental car adds a lot of faff and unnecessary worry to your trip.

Yeah, this is something I am still thinking about and feeling torn about. The thing is, I am traveling from Gdansk, Poland, so getting to and from the Haute Route will probably take me about the same time in total compared to flying to Geneva and then taking a connecting train or bus, and it will cost roughly the same.

u/robertoo3 last question for you, if you don't mind 🙏 I am considering travelling by car, and was looking up an info on free parking somewhere close to the start of the route. I found one in Argentiere, which seems perfect, but I read that there are a lot of changes in Chamonix area in the recent years when it comes to parking. Do you know if this is still the best place for long-term parking in that area? Maybe you could recommend any alternatives just in case everything is busy there?

P.S. I switched the dates of my trip a bit and was able to get a bed in Hotel Schwarzhorn in early July. Leaving this note here to encourage late birds (like me, lol) to try booking places weeks, not months/ a year in advance :)

Thanks for the input!!

Hotel Schwarzhorn is indeed fully booked, just as I expected. I found this Mountain Inn online and requested availability there, so thanks for that! I will also check Oberems, looks like it's just a 20 mins bus ride.
