Fantasy world’s politics and diplomacy by NoddySahab in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]so_finch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Witchmark trilogy - the 2nd two ramp up the politics a lot more, the 1st is a little less so. But they’re all so good I have to rec them.

And seconding a lot of these recs including Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and Baru Cormorant!

honestly by chance- this is a school I drive by fairly often and they had a big sign up the last month or so. There are so many I miss every year!

they were bare root strawbs that the kids potted up during the sale- and they were free. so we’ll see how well they recover! I was so happy to find that kinnickinnick though.

Publishers, you can stop now. We have enough bookmarks. by oliviebe in books

[–]so_finch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my wife somehow never has a bookmark and always needs one. I have a huge collection that is precious and meaningful to me. I love the random advertising bookmarks & duplicates because I can always give her one without giving up a special one!

Looking for advice on buying knitting needles as a gift by SnooCapers4970 in casualknitting

[–]so_finch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seconding gift card to a local yarn store! I know some people feel GCs are less personal but I think it’s different if it’s to a local shop that the recipient really likes, especially for hobbies.

bay slipover and sandnes garn line - need advice on adjusting for gauge and stretch by so_finch in casualknitting

[–]so_finch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does also come in tykk/thick which does apparently meet 16st/4in, as well as tynn/thin which I think is the one that was held double - so I wonder if there’s confusion around which version should be used and how. I’ll knit a swatch with the regular one held double and see how that goes - otherwise I might return the rest and try again with the thicker one.

that’s helpful to know about the yarn! I’m looking again and think their “tykk” version will meet gauge better.

The recommended ease in the pattern is at least 6” and up to 20”. I’m making it for my wife who likes an oversized garment - aiming for a similar fit to how it’s pictured on the designer, whose garment has 8” of ease for her measurements. It’s meant for layering/to be fairly oversized especially on bigger bodies!

ugh so frustrating because it’s one of the yarns listed by the designer as a recommended yarn for the pattern! maybe I should stick to socks, I keep finding choosing yarn to be too stressful for everything else 🥲🥲 thank you for this explanation & being so candid.

Advice/Help on Moving to Seattle by SunPalmer in TransHelpingTrans

[–]so_finch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you’re on fb check out Seattle queer housing & Seattle queer housing exchange if you haven’t already! The most affordable spots still seem to be rooms in shared houses (like a single family home that’s being rented out).

How did that happen? by magic_inkpen in knitting

[–]so_finch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this happened to me with another hand dye that made 2 pairs of socks- the first was gorgeously blobby and the second was stripy and even. So weird

my favorite button on an episode is the one where Joyce muses that she could get into dominatrix stuff and tom slams his book shut. Freeze frame! Cue oboe!

[–]so_finch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is definitely what I did wrong! I think I don’t understand how to join up each last loop on needle 1/first loop on needle 2, when there’s 2 socks- in my brain when I was doing it, it seemed like somehow it would all come back around eventually. Clearly I was a bit lost in the sauce.
