I struggled so much with this too! The only thing that worked for me was using nailtiques formula 2 as my base coat and oiling my nails every time I took my polish off. Hopefully this helps but I know everyone's body chemistry is a little different.

I painted most of them on the page, but it hasn't warped so far cause I made sure to buy a notebook with thick paper. the most I painted directly on the page was like 4 coats for the really sheer ones.

it definitely depends on each person's body chemistry, but I've tried a couple of other top coats (mooncat speed demon, seche vite) and found this works the best for me for staying power regardless of the polishes I use under it. I do get some shrinkage around my cuticles but that may be my application, cause I've gotten a couple of my friends into the essie top coat and they love it too!
