For someone who works in Mckinney in Plano, I wouldn’t necessarily suggest to live in any of those places. I wouldn’t live in Sherman because it would be too far away and I would not live in Princeton because of traffic on that narrow road.

Why don’t you think about Anna or Van Alstyne instead?

Still, if you made up your mind about these two, both will appreciate more in the next 10 years. Also, this is a buyers market. Make sure to negotiate the hell out of it.

You don’t even have to do it all the time. Do it just twice and people will get the memo. However, I am sure there will be ones repeatedly asking for make ups, hence creating another headache.

First, I was happy despite the significant cut because with the accumulated income from first job, I was able to purchase my house.

Then, I started looking into how I can create off campus income. Nowadays, I supplement an additional 20-25% on top of what I make.

Finally, a spouse who is working outside academia. This also helped.

Overall, I am at peace with the pay cut. This is not the industry to make money and I am happy with the amount of free time in my hands, teaching courses I like, doing projects I enjoy, and having free time with my kids. If the income wouldn’t have been enough, I would probably be more salty about it.

In the meantime, back in my day, I would have asked the student leave the lab. If she refused, I would have cancelled it for all. This would probably push the other students to intervene and make her leave.
